Die vorliegende Reihe umfaßt die Blätter 2, 9, 10, 19, 21, 23, 36, 39-41, 44, 46, 48, 53-55 (Zählung nach Nebehay/W.). - Teils leicht finger- bzw. stockfleckig (zumeist nur den Rand betreffend) und mit kl. Randeinrissen. Das Blatt 19 ("Innere Hofraum-Ostseite") in beidseitig bedrucktem Probeabzug, aus der Sammlung des großen österreichischen Otologen Adam Politzer (1835-1920), dessen graphische Sammlung 1922 bei Schwarz in Wien versteigert wurde (vgl. Lugt 2037 und 2741; die vorliegende Stempelvariante nicht bei Lugt). "Il collectionnait depuis 1870 environ, sans système bien défini, mais seulement d'après son goût artistique [...] L' amateur a consacré une attention spéciale à la lithographie, de ses debuts à l'année 1880" (Lugt, S. 513). Lithographie von drei Steinen, signiert "A. Prevost". Drei Blätter (je 690:154 mm), unmontiert. Über 2 Meter langes, durchlaufendes Panorama mit der Darstellung des Begräbniszugs Napoleon Bonapartes, dessen sterbliche Überreste erst am 15. Dezember 1840 nach ihrer Überführung von St. Helena auf Betreiben des Bürgerkönigs Louis-Philippe im Invalidendom ihre letzte Ruhestätte fanden. Ausgehend vom 1806 auf Napoleons eigenen Befehl errichteten, jedoch erst 1836 fertiggestellten Arc de Triomphe ist hier der gesamte Trauerzug über die Champs-Elysées bis zum Invalidendom dargestellt. - Sehr selten.

Folio (c. 485 x 335 mm) XVI ff. and printed dedication (to Carlo Emanuele III) with engr. initial. Fine series of decorations with elaborate cartouches and emblems, some including architectural or marine designs. The Bologna painter Gaetano Bernardino Ottani (1736-1827), long active in Turin, created the stage decorations of his native city's Teatro Formagliari in 1742. - Plates mostly engraved by Dionisio Valesi, others by Pietro Peiroleri and Angelo Ghizzardi. Margins occasionally wrinkled and fingerstained (especially t. p. and dedication). Wants the two portraits engraved by Ghizzardi. Rare; the San Francisco State Univ. Library copy wants the dedication; the OCLC record linked by Princeton and Harvard states one portrait and two plates as missing. Ornamentstichkat. Berlin 592. Bleistiftzeichnung auf bläulichem Papier, signiert “Perger”. 35,9:21,5 cm (Bildausschnitt) auf Untersatzkarton (43:32,3 cm). Die eh. Verse am unteren Rand der Darstellung: “Ach - unser Leben leitet | Ein starrer Herrscherblick. | Und jeder glaubt bereitet | Ein neues sich und schreitet | Nur durch ein alt Geschick”. - Seiner politischen Schriften wegen 1854 aus dem Staatsdienst entlassen, wurde Traun 1859 Generalsekretär der Versicherungsanstalt ‘Vindobona’ in Wien und später Mitglied des Reichsrats, wo er sich als liberaler Gegner des Tiroler Klerikalen Josef Greuter zu profilieren wußte. Von 1870 an lebte der mit Theodor Storm befreundete Schriftsteller zurückgezogen auf Schloß Leopoldskron bei Salzburg und verfaßte u. a. die später von Carl Zuckmayer bearbeitete Novelle ‘Der Schelm von Bergen’ (1879) und die an Heine orientierten ‘Exkursionen eines Österreichers’ (1881). (Schindler) und Giebisch-G. 359. - Das schöne Brustportrait stammt aus der Hand des Wiener Malers Anton Ritter von Perger, der seit 1845 als Professor der Anatomie an der Wiener Kunstakademie tätig war. Gestochene Kupferplatte (120:169 mm). Schön gestochene Darstellung Mariens als Mater Dolorosa mit dem Leichnam des vom Kreuze abgenommenen Christus. Der Reproduktionsstecher Petrini (geb. um 1750) war bis 1810 in Rom tätig (vgl. Thieme/B. 26, 500 u. Nagler 11, 188). Als Schöpfer der Vorzeichnung wird "L. Agricola" genannt (d. i. Luigi Agricola, Vater des Historienmalers Filippo Agricola?). Mit Druckervermerk: "In Roma presso Agapito Franzetti al Corso".

Colour print, measuring 125:93 cm. Folded. Large-format advertising poster by the Viennese studio Hans Neumann for the renowned fashion dealer Zwieback on the Fleischmarkt in central Vienna. Hans Neumann (1888-1960) studied at the Viennese Academy of Arts and then was mainly active in Berlin until WWI. After the war, he established one of Austria's largest advertising studios with numerous employees (cf. Bernhard Denscher, Österreichische Plakatkunst 1898-1938, Vienna 1992, p. 200). In 1938, emigrated to London and later to Australia, where he founded a very successful Atelier for Graphic Design in Melbourne.

Kupferplatte mit zwei Andachtsbildchen: das Minoritenwappen (ein bloßer und ein kuttentragender Arm mit Stigmata vor einem Kreuz, von einem Strick umkränzt) sowie der Hl. Franziskus, kniend und die Stigmata empfangend. Unter der letzteren Darstellung findet sich die Legende, die auf den schon 1221 begründeten Dritten Orden der Franziskaner hinweist.

Large oblong folio (553 x 350 mm). 144 views on 16 ff. Contemp. blue morocco with giltstamped title, cover fillets, and corner fleurons; gilt title to spine. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Rare series of 144 splendid lithographed views of Paris and its environs (115 x 60 mm each), including Notre Dame, Hôtel de Ville, Palais Royal, Dôme des Invalides, Cemetiére Pére Lachaise, most scenes charmingly enlivened with figures. Similarly masterful is the treatment of the interiors and views of the principal buildings of chrches of Paris. The lithographs are by Benard and Frey after Jean Baptiste Arnout (1788-1865). "Arnout is best known as a dexterous and prolific lithographer. He was one of the men who founded that art in France and published several series of views of Paris (1820, 1837, 1844)" (cf. 13 erotic watercolours. [Probably Vienna, before 1850].
13 ff. of coloured pencil drawings, numbered 3-5, 8, 15-16, 18-20, 2[1] (?), 22, 31 and 32. About 22 x 16 cm each, matted. Curious collection of obscene watercolours, apparently a product of the Austrian Biedermeier period. Three drawings poke fun at the then-famous vaudevillian athlete, juggler and balance artiste Rappo (the Innsbruck-born Karl von Rapp, 1800-53), giving quite a new meaning to the term "show business". Others employ the setting of a trade fair, depicting the city harlots preparing for work and travelling salesmen in pursuit of lewd entertainment. While nearly all drawings are accompanied by tongue-in-cheek couplets, one has no caption, and another is simply entitled "table-tipping" (not the séance kind). In the circus drawings, Rappo's name was first obscured as "R. Appo" and then - rather crudely - changed to the familiar spelling. - A fine, well-preserved collection, apparently a substantial part of a formerly larger set.

Lith. de Delpech". 37 lithogr. plates (numbered 1-37, complete thus?), monogrammed "H.te L.". 2) H. Bellangé. "Fantaisies par Bellangé". [Paris, Gilhaut, 1829]. 12 lithogr. plates, signed "H.te Bellange". Half calf with printed cover label. A fine collection of two lithographed series: genre scenes with riders, coaches, soldiers, hunting, salons, etc. The lithographer Hippolyte Lecomte (1781-1857) is known for his landscapes and genre and history paintings, "but mainly for his battles and scenes of historical representation" (cf. Thieme/B. XXII, 526). - The French military painter Hippolyte Bellangé (1800-66) "was capable of painting anecdotal scenes and combining the most comical situations with the most serious ones. His style made him extremely popular as a painter of French military success. Apart from his numerous paintings he created a body of some 600 lithographs" (cf. Thieme/B. Undatierte, hübsch aquarellierte Folge von 10 österreichischen Offizieren in ihren Regimentsfarben. Der aus Znaim gebürtige österreichischische Militär- und Pferdemaler und Zeichner A. Pock studierte bei Griepenkerl an der Wiener Akademie und war bis 1914 Mitarbeiter der Meggendorfer Blätter; das Heeresgeschichtliche Museum besitzt einen Bestand an Werken Pocks (vgl. Zur Illustration von "Georg Christoph Lichtenberg's Ausführlicher Erklärung der Hogarthischen Kupferstiche" schuf der Kupferstecher Carl Rahl als Radierung ausgeführte Reproduktionen der Blätter William Hogarths. Sie geben die originalen Graphiken in auf etwa die Hälfte reduzierter Größe wieder. außerhalb der Plattenränder. - Einband an den Rändern stärker lädiert; Titel stockfleckig, sonst im ganzen wohlerhalten. Hand-aquatinted copper-plate engraving, printed on J. Whatman Turkey Mill watermarked paper dated 1835. 955 x 640 mm, sumptuously framed and glazed. The famous depiction of a Falcon from the "Birds of America" by the world-famous French-American naturalist and painter John James Audubon (1785-1851), which was purchased at a Christie's auction for $11.5 million in March 2000, setting a world record for the most expensive book ever sold (surpassed only by the 1640 "Psalm Bay Book", sold for $14.2 million in November 2013). Very good colour, with the back of the upper bird a subtle charcoal, beaks and feet of both birds a pale blue wash, slight limited spotting to the background, slight cast on the edge, and minor thumbing, three edges of the sheet gilt from when it was bound.

22 Bll. Meist 8to und 4to. Die vorliegenden Arbeiten umfassen sauber und vollständig ausgeführte Modeentwürfe, Akte und Werbezeichnungen und bieten in ihrer Gesamtheit ein schönes Ensemble von Arbeiten der Wiener Künstlerin. - Käthe Berl hatte Kostümdesign an der Akademie für angewandte Kunst bei Franz Cizek studiert. Nach ihrer Emigration 1938 nach London war sie dort für das österreichische Kabarett "Das Laterndl" tätig und emigrierte im Jahr darauf nach New York, wo sie als "Pionierin der räumlichen Emailkunst" (Nachlässe in Österreich. Personenlexikon. Literaturarchiv der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek) wirkte und an der University of Long Island Unterricht in Maske erteilte. Daneben schrieb Käthe Berl Beiträge für "Ceramics Monthly", "The Art of Enameling" und "Crafts for the Aging" und veröffentlichte die Verse "Von Kindern für Kinder", das als Wiener Jugendkunst-Bilderbuch Nr. 1 bei Hirt in Leipzig verlegt wurde.

Overall size 232 x 182 mm. Watercolour and gouache on rice-paper. Framed and glazed. The drawings by an unidentified Chinese artist depict four variously seated female musicians playing the long lute (san-hsein), dulcimer (yang ch'in), transverse flute (ti-tzi) and, apparently, a form of straight trumpet. - Light discolouration to paper; a few small marks; very slight damp-staining to lower margin and tiny tear to leading edge of one drawing. An attractive set.

(6), 133, (3) pp. With 19 (including frontispiece; 1 double-page-sized) coloured aquatints by or after Albrisetti, Bonatti, Bramati, Bottigelli, Bussi, Fumagalli, Gallina, Palagi, Raineri, and Sanquirico. Contemporary ruby-red morocco, elaborately gilt with giltstamped arms to both covers. Green moirée silk endpapers. Only edition. Of all of Gironi's publications, all of which are of a similar nature, the present work on ladies' ablutions and private habits in Greek antiquity as well as in modern Greece would appear to be the rarest. Illlustrated with particular care and printed in no more than eighty copies, it is dedicated to the 20-year-old Archduchess of Austria, Sophie (1805-72), daughter of the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph, later aunt and mother-in-law to Empress Elisabeth of Austria ("Sisi"). Our copy is that from the library of the Archduchess herself, printed on strong, very wide-margined wove paper and sumptuously bound. Slight foxing to endpapers and edges, otherwise in perfect condition. Sophie's monogram (her entwined, crowned initials) stamped to reverse of title. Not in British Library, Atabey, Blackmer, Brunet, Cicognara, Colas, Graesse, Hiler, Lipperheide, or Rothschild.

Kupferstich, ca. 210 x 308 mm. Alt auf Trägerpapier aufgezogen. Seltener Stich mit Szenen aus dem Leben des Hl. Hyacinth (Jacek Odrowaz), Begründer des Dominikanerordens in Polen und Patron Litauens. Seine Missionsreise führte Hyazinth auch nach Friesach (Kärnten), wo er 1221 das erste Dominikanerkloster im deutschen Sprachraum gründete. - Der polnische Maler Martin Baron aus dem galizischen Jaroslaw war wahrscheinlich in Deutschland tätig. "Er malte Heiligenbilder, nach welchen Peter Overadt in Köln zwei 1605 und 1606 gestochen hat, den hl. Stanislaus Kostka und den hl. Hyacinth darstellend. Weitere Nachrichten über ihn fehlen gänzlich" (Thieme/B.). - Gleichmäßig stärker gebräunt; Spuren alter Faltung; einige Wurmspuren, teils auch das Bild betreffend. Collection of very early designs for refined ladies' fashion, some executed in great detail (pen-and-ink, pencil, crayons; some watercolouring). Three sketches bear a (probably later) stamp on the reverse: "Maria Jungwirth | Goldradierung, Kunstgewerbe | Wien, VI., Capistrangasse 3". - Maria Jungwirth from Krems studied at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule under Oskar Strnad, Alfred Roller, Josef Hoffmann, Franz Cizek, Adele von Stark from 1914 to 1917. She specialized in gold etching and watercolours. - Somewhat dusty; slight edge defects.

A rare example of risqué drawings by Shepard, best known for shaping the definitive image of "Winnie-the-Pooh", but also a prolific staff-member of "Punch" and illustrator of favourites such as "The Wind in the Willows" and "David Copperfield". - Slight worming to mount (not affecting image). All signed in pencil on the reverse: "E. H. Shepard, Shamley Green, Guildford." Although the drawings are clearly marked for reproduction ("In 3 Colours"; "size 10 1/4 high facsimile"; "vet to Mr Shepard", etc.), it is unclear if they were actually published - the book for which they were intended could not be traced, and their subject matter does not fit easily into the artist's known canon, showing Shepard as a highly accomplished, albeit tamer disciple of Aubrey Beardsley with an inclination toward Rococo rather than Art Nouveau.

Signed in red "Ernest H. Shepard" at lower right. 13 watercolours and pencil and ink drawings mounted on 60 leaves of white and brown-toned paper. Splendid red morocco binding by Alphonse Giroux of Paris with covers and spine gilt and inlaid (wanting the fore-edge lock). Small oblong folio (340 x 245 mm). Red moirée silk endpapers. All edges gilt. A magificently bound, early album containing sketches by the artistically gifted princess as well as by other artists. It was not until the year of her birth that her father Louis Philippe, the Duke of Orleans (1773-1850), who had had to leave Europe after the French Revolution and spent several years in America, returned to France, where in 1830 he accepted the crown, following the deposition of Charles X. Until the February Revolution of 1848 and his emigration to England he reigned as "King of the French". - The present album contains three unsigned portrait studies in pencil attributable to the princess, probably based on details from an old master painting (possibly a Crucifixion or Lamentation of Christ). In her youth, Clementine is known frequently to have copied details from Dürer, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Holbein, and Titian. Two of the present studies are dated "1831", when she was but fourteen years old: among the earliest of her known works, they show off her remarkably developed talent. - Among the other drawings in the album is a watercolour still life with fowl, signed "D. Pedro 1850" and inscribed, "Offert À Son Altesse Royale Madame La Duchesse de Saxe Cobourg Gotha le 3 Juin 1851", while a similar still life is signed "D. Suid [?] fecit / 20 Set. 1850". Other drawings include four pencil sketches by the English painter and engraver William Daniell (1769-1837), who had accompanied his uncle Thomas Daniell to India in 1784 and subsequently produced a wealth of highly regarded landscapes and scenes of Indian life (including work for the famous "Oriental Scenery" volume), many of which are in the Royal collections (cf. Thieme/Becker VIII, 361f.). His signed contributions are two boating scenes (1827, one entitled "Patience in a Punt"), an Indian riverside scene (1827) entitled "The Plantane tree, Bengal", and an "Indian Bull" (1830, inked and watercoloured). Another particularly finely executed watercolour shows a beach scene at Ingouville (in Normandy), dated August 1839 and signed "L. Laurent". In addition, there are three skilled but unsigned pen-and-ink sketches, apparently also by a trained artist, showing a watchman with a shouldered musket, the Falls of Clyde in Scotland ("Chute de la Clyde / Lanarke 11 Juillet 51"), and the profile study of a lady (all but the latter washed in ink). A few torn stubs show the album to have formerly comprised several additional leaves, while the faint nature-printed impressions left by plants between two leaves prove that the album was once also used to preserve botanical mementos. - The princess grew up in the Palais Royale in Paris. In 1843 she was married to Prince August of Saxe-Coburg; in 1861 she would give birth to Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg, who in 1887 accepted the crown of Bulgaria, against the wishes of the European Powers and indeed those of the house of Coburg. Having long lived under the same roof with the similarly aged Victoria of Kent, later Queen Victoria (1819-1901), Clementine maintained a lifelong correspondence with the Queen of England, and her more than 600 letters are now in the Royal Archive in Windsor. Also the Hoover Institution at Stanford University keeps material from the estate of Princess Clementine within the so-called "Czar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria papers". Her artistic productions have remained enduringly popular: in 1990, one of her pencil drawings ("Etude des chiens") sold for 20,000 Francs (Paris, Tajan, 5 Dec. 1990, lot 23).

A fine image showing yard and street cleaners at study. - The Russian photographer Ermakov trained as a military topographer and took part in the Russo-Turkish War before setting up his photographic business in Tbilisi. He travelled extensively as far as Iran and took part in several archaeological expeditions in the Caucasus, leaving a series of unique photographs.

14 mounted plates in pencil, ink and colour wash, 2 of which are stuck to the outsides of the portfolio's protective boards with cloth ties. Various sizes, but mostly ca. 170 x 130 mm. Signed and captioned in English and Hungarian. Rare survival of a collection of sketches from the Russian POW camp in Peschanka, Siberia, all executed by an evidently accomplished, otherwise undocumented Hungarian artist (and soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army) who captured the conditions in and around the camp during the later years of the First World War. Thám's caricature-like style is marked by clear, precise outlines reminiscent of the contemporaneous work of Olaf Gulbransson and Eduard Thöny. The two larger sketches on the cover boards (measuring ca. 170 x 220 mm) show self-portraits of the artist, at work at oil paintings (one a landscape, the other a nude). The leaves within show prisoners climbing the bunk bed or resting in their crowded cots, marching through a snowed-in camp carrying heavy buckets, playing chess, etc.; some are captioned "Coming from the American Y.M.C.A. Kitchen", "The Red Cross library", or even show ladies in fur coats with an officer "at the exhibition", while a few others have Easter Greetings themes. - Peschanka is near Chita in the Transbaikalia region, on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 6035 kilometres from Moscow. While during the Great War conditions in the POW camps on the whole were vastly superior to those during WWII, thanks to the efforts of the Red Cross and inspectors from neutral countries, the situation in the Siberian camps was notoriously poor, and as many as a quarter of the 2.1 million Austro-Hungarian soldiers whom Russia held as prisoners of war did not survive. - Browned due to paper, with occasional edge flaws, but well preserved.

Neben einem Geschütz und den Mannschaftsbaracken sind mehrere mit genauen Höhenbezeichnungen versehene Landschaftspanoramen zu sehen, manche bezeichnet ("Zur Erinnerung an den 20. October 1914 wo hier die Serben eine starcke Niederlage hatten"; Ortsangaben u. a. Romanja Planina, Kukor, Grabavik, Krs; Gradiste, Daganj, Trebervic). Außerdem findet sich die Propagandazeichnung eines den russischen Bären, englischen Löwen und belgischen Igel mit dem Gewehrkolben erschlagenden deutschen Soldaten. Am Schluss hat sich 1916 ein Wiener "Freund und Kriegskollege", Andreas Seidlitzky aus Simmering, mit einem Gedenkvers "zur ewigen Erinnerung" eingetragen. - Am vorderen Innendeckel Marke der Papierhandlung Simon Kattan, Sarajevo. With 50 hand-coloured full-page plates (c. 200 x 125 mm) heightened with egg-white, (44 lithographs, 3 engravings, 3 wood-engravings), of which 33 are after drawings by Heinrich Jessen. Contemporary blindstamped decorated red cloth, front cover with title lettered in gold. Charming colour plate book mainly with military costumes. Some of these plates were published earlier in F.G. Buek's "Album hambürgischer Costüme", 1843-1847. The plates depict messenger boys, maidservants, a police officer, several military men on horseback, etc. - Hinges weak, top and lower part of spine damaged. Coloured costumes in good condition. Each puzzle measures 195 x 245 mm. Each puzzle with an engraved plate mounted on thin wood, coloured by a contemporary hand and cut to form a jigsaw puzzle, with engraved caption and short description below the image. Stored in the original cardboard box with an etched and engraved sample plate for a fourth puzzle (with caption "Équité de l'empereur") on the top, coloured by a contemporary hand, and an embossed gilt-paper border. Each puzzle with the original pink paper wrap-around slip preserved. A fine and colourful set of jigsaw puzzles depicting scenes from the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. Two of the puzzles and the sample plate have the address "Ulysse Paris" engraved in the image. Each puzzle has 20 pieces: the first depicts Napoleon calmly sleeping in a chair after having given orders to his generals on the eve of the battle of Austerlitz (1 Dec. 1805); the second shows Napoleon addressing an exhausted soldier - a scene from the battle of Lodi on 10 May 1796, fought between Napoleon's forces and the Austrian rear guard commanded by Johann Beaulieu. The third puzzle shows Napoleon as merciful emperor, receiving the thankful wife and children of a Prussian lord accused of conspiracy, whom he pardoned. The puzzle matching the scene depicted on the top of the box is not included. A few pieces cracked at thin spots; box slightly defective with traces of handling and browned. A good set.

Beschreibt den umfangreichen Teilnachlaß, größtenteils aus der Zeit vor 1930 stammend, der das bisher bekannte Werk des großen Wiener Jugendstilkünstlers, der zu den bedeutendsten Mitarbeitern der Wiener Werkstätte, "innerhalb welcher er an nahezu allen wesentlichen Projekten beteiligt war" (Cabuk, s. u., 93), zu zählen ist, um mehr als die Hälfte erweitert. Entwürfe für Löfflers berühmte Buchillustrationen für den Wiener Verlag (1903-06) sind ebenso vertreten wie Plakatenwürfe aus den zwanziger Jahren und Skizzen für sein Erstlingswerk bei der Wiener Werkstätte, eine Kassette für eine Ehrenurkunde (abgebildet in Dekorative Kunst 19 (1911), S. 28). Auch ein Entwurf für den 1912 von Josef Hoffmann und Bertold Löffler im Auftrag der Wiener Werkstätte geschaffenen Salzburger Volkskeller, für den die beiden ebenso verantwortlich zeichneten wie für die geniale Konzeption des berühmten 'Caberet Fledermaus', findet sich im hier dokumentierten Bestand.
