An Album of Original Modern American Federal Furniture Stencils.
N.p.: N.p. ca. 1968. Modern working collection of over 100 original stencils tracings and hand painted samples of Federal furniture decorations. All laid in enveloped or taped into a modern three ring binder. These were used for furniture projects mainly chairs so signs of use are to be expected. A treasure trove for researchers and practitioners.Up until the 1840s stencils were widely used in America for walls and furniture. The use of stenciling declined as wallpaper became more economically viable as a decorative finish but it did not die out entirely. This collection dates from the 1960s and the designer perhaps named M. Robertshaw has taped in two pages of the catalog of stenciled American Federal furniture by Hitchcock Chair Company of Connecticut so it is likely he worked there. In 1818 Lambert Hitchcock founded an innovative chair company in the northwestern hills of Connecticut where he produced beautiful hand stenciled furniture. The company was ver successful and didn't close its doors in 2006 although it has recently been revived. N.p. unknown

Publisher's brown wrappers with brown and gilt lettering cloth spine very old but might not be original. A very good copy. None for this year located by OCLC.Pages 161-268 are entirely taken up with rattan furniture. Heywood Brothers was established in 1826 and the Wakefield Company in 1855. Both firms produced wicker and rattan furniture and as these products became increasingly popular towards the end of the century they became serious rivals. In 1897 the companies merged as Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company this name was changed to Heywood-Wakefield Company in 1921 purchasing Washburn-Heywood Chair Company in 1916 Oregon Chair Company in 1920 and Lloyd Manufacturing Company in 1921. Through furniture this exhibition catalogue will explore the cultural identity of a little-studied region of 18th and 19th century New England: southeastern Massachusetts an area that stretches from just south of Boston to Providence east to the tip of Cap Cod and includes the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. The era between 1710 and 1850 was marked by enormous changes in the landscape population and economy of this area as well as in the activities of furniture craftsmen and the purchasing patterns of local residents. Three themes are paramount here: 1. Regionalism in the character of furniture made in the area and the forces that shaped that identity. 2. Shop practices and the evolving craft practices of furniture makers through the recreation of two shops the rural handcraft tradition of Samuel Wing of Sandwich in 1800 and the mechanized operation of a New Bedford or Fall River chair factory in 1850. Many of their artifacts survive intact at their third and final community now known as Old Economy Village in western Pennsylvania. The extensive furniture collection most of it dating from the years between 1805 and 1835 has long daunted scholars because the objects are unsigned unmentioned in the society's accounts and went uninventoried when individual members died. Philip D. Zimmerman overcomes these obstacles by using object-based analysis to identify core features that distinguish Harmonist-made furniture from that made by craftsmen elsewhere in the region and the nation. He combines this with information from surviving written records and provenances most from the twentieth century. His strategic approach yields a compelling story of the built environment and the wide range of artifacts made by ordinary woodworkers who were members of the society.
