‎Lederer Charles screenwriter‎

‎BACHELOR IN PARADISE‎

‎Hollywood: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 1960. 153 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript printed on rectos only bradbound in studio wrappers. Residue of spine label a very good copy. A "temporary complete" draft for this apparently unproduced screenplay with leaves dated variously over the time-span noted above. This is not the film with Bob Hope as the writer of "bachelor's books" who goes to ground in suburbia. This story concerns a con man who awakens from amnesia after thirteen years. Lederer was a busy man in the early 60s and 1960 alone saw the release of OCEAN'S ELEVEN and CAN-CAN. Inserted at the front are three copies of a salary estimating sheet for the characters in the film proof of some sort that the film was perhaps in the process of budgeting when the plug was pulled. LeMay's script was partially an adaptation of Harold Sherman's play MARK TWAIN drawing as well on other biographical and original material. Additional dialogue was contributed by Harry Chandlee. Frederic March Alexis Smith John Carradine and others starred under the direction of Irving Rapper. This was LeMay's fourth screen credit. Three vintage black and white second generation photographs from the groundbreaking 1938 film documenting the 1936 Summer Olympipcs held in Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Released in two parts "Olympia: Festival of Nations" and "Olympia: Festival of Beauty." From the archive of Maurice Bessy with his rubber stamp and light holograph annotations on the verso. <br/><br/>Based on Riefenstahl's photobook from the previous year "Schonheit im Olympischen Kampf." A rare example where a photobook and a film are equally important as both works of art and a historical document. Riefenstahl made the book and the film as propaganda for Hitler and spent a lifetime trying to live down her devotion to him but this work in particular is so powerful as to stand apart from the reasons for which it was made. Easily the most visceral and important document of The Olympics and the spirit of human physical achievement ever produced. <br/><br/>Variously sized between 3.5 x 7 inches and 5 x 6 inches.
