Second Draft script for the 1974 film.<br /> <br /> In 1969 Julian Barry was hired by Columbia Pictures to write the screenplay for a dramatic biographical account of comedian Lenny Bruce's life. Shortly thereafter the project was delayed reportedly due to studios' demand for romances as a result of Arthur Hiller's successful 1970 romantic drama "Love Story" leading Barry to approach theatre director Tom O'Horgan about adapting the screenplay for the stage. The play was a success running on Broadway from May 1971 to June 1972 and earning its lead Cliff Gorman a Tony Award in 1972.<br /> <br /> The finished film completed two years later was Bob Fosse's third directorial effort and first non-musical with standout performances by Dustin Hoffman as Bruce and Valerie Perrine as his wife Honey. A tour de force shot in black and white in a documentary style interspersed with interviews jumping back and forth from Bruce's early rise to fame to his twilight days and eventual death.<br /> <br /> Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture Best Director and Best Screenplay. Estimating script for the 1939 film.<br /> <br /> In his 1970 biography of Nathanael West Jay Martin notes: "On June 6 1938 West was hired for his 'established' salary of $350 a week by RKO Pictures-the first of five major studios to employ him-to make a screenplay from an original story by Richard Carroll. Putting everything else aside within a week he outlined his plans for treating the material. He fretted all weekend over whether the outline would be accepted knowing that he could be out of a job again on Monday. <br /> <br /> On late Monday afternoon he was persuaded to telephone the executive producer Lee Marcus who told him to go ahead at once to the screenplay. On July 20 West finished a first draft for what would be one of his most successful films. After eight weeks in all having polished his script West was released by RKO. <br /> <br /> At this point it appeared that West had a good chance to earn a single credit for this high budget B-quality movie but the studio called in a hack writer Jerry Cady to polish West's script. After Cady's work on it proved unsatisfactory Dalton Trumbo came in to do a revision before the film went into production. Trumbo eliminated most of the revisions made by Cady restored some of West's material and made still other alterations. By this time West had returned to New York and although his secretary demanded that he ask the guild to arbitrate the credits he appeared indifferent and nearly missed getting any screen credit at all."<br /> <br /> An aerial melodrama about nine passengers on a commercial flight from Los Angeles to Panama City who crash-land in the Amazon rainforest. Nominated for ten Academy Awards winning five including Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. <br /> <br /> Pasternak's novel was widely banned in the Soviet Union due to its perceived criticism of the Soviet government forcing director David Lean to begin filming on location in Spain-chosen in large part as a result of his positive experiences filming "Lawrence of Arabia" there several years prior as well as the promise of snow. The film was shot over ten months in Soria and Aragon and at the Aldeadavila Dam with a large-scale Moscow set built outside of Madrid as documented throughout the archive. An unseasonably warm winter in Spain obligated production to head to Finland and Canada in the final months of shooting in order to obtain a sufficiently wintry backdrop for landscape scenes. <br /> <br /> The archive includes eleven photographs of cast and crew members between takes on the Moscow set several shots featuring Palmer and director David Lean during a parade scene with crowds of extras in Soviet militia garb in the background. The Moscow photographs in particular highlight the intricate set and costume design elements which went into constructing the mock city including several striking images of parade participants holding huge portraits of Soviet officials. <br /> <br /> An unusual addition to the collection is a photograph of Palmer in conversation with noted Austrian-American director Fred Zinnemann who collaborated with actor Omar Sharif in "Behold a Pale Horse" earlier in 1964. <br /> <br /> Shot on location throughout Spain Finland and Canada. <br /> <br /> Photographs and contact sheets varying sizes. The series followed the Varners a wealthy Mississippi family whose patriarch is forced to confront the newly arrived young son of his former rival who challenges the Varners' control over the town. <br /> <br /> Set in the fictitious town of Frenchman's Bend Mississippi. <br /> <br /> Red titled wrappers noted as REVISED FINAL on the front wrapper dated January 11 1966.
