‎A Night to Remember Atlantique Latitude 41 Degrees Original French Film Poster‎

‎London: The Rank Organization 1958. French theatrical release poster for the seminal 1958 British docudrama "A Night to Remember" here under it's French title "Atlantique Latitude 41 Degrees."

Probably the most distinctive poster produced for the film. Novelist Ambler and director Baker set out to make a film that depicted the sinking of the Titanic as accurately as possible with no added fictional subplots. In addition to being massively entertaining the film is today held in high regard by "Titanic" historians compared to the more melodramatic and big-budget take by James Cameron in 1997.

Director Baker noted in a 1991 interview "The whole purpose of making the film was to show a society that had persuaded itself that you could make a ship which could never to be sunk."

34 x 52 inches on archival linen Fine condition.

Criterion Collection 7. ‎[Film scripts] Dashiell Hammett (novel, screenwriter)‎

‎Screenplay for The Thin Man Sequel After the Thin Man Original screenplay Hammett's copy with holograph correction‎

‎Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1935. Dashiell Hammett's original submitted Treatment script for the first sequel to "The Thin Man" here referred to only as "Thin Man Sequel" and ultimately titled "After the Thin Man." With a single manuscript correction by Hammett and letter of provenance from Hammett's daughter Josephine Hammett Marshall regarding the discovery of the treatment in the family's estate.

The first "Thin Man" film released in 1934 and based on Hammett's novel was a smash hit and is today a key film in the American screwball comedy cycle. Five sequels were made between 1936 and 1947 all starring the original acting team of William Powell and Myrna Loy and this previously unknown attempt at a sequel by Hammett was clearly commissioned by MGM but never produced making this script an entire unpublished Hammett work. The story is a completely original one never reworked for the other films very much written in Hammett's trademark style and reading a bit more like a story treatment i.e. a novel than a final screenplay which is likely as far as the story got on the road to production.

The piece is dated Sept. 17 1935 at the lower right corner of the front panel along with Hammett's name and Hammett's name is noted in pencil next to the title label though not in Hammett's hand. There is only one single-word correction to the entire text at page 83 in Hammett's hand where the word "compact" is replaced with "cigarette case."

Accompanying the screenplay is a typed letter signed from Hammett's daughter who edited a recently published collection of Hammett's letters on her personal stationery stating that the screenplay was discovered by Hammett's wife in 1980 and that it had been a part of the family's estate until that time. Probably one of only 2-3 copies that could have been produced and very possibly the only copy extant. To our knowledge no other copy of this story in any form has ever been recorded at auction or sold on the market.

Light blue titled wrappers with the white MGM studio label present manuscript pencil notation of Hammett's name secretarial rubber-stamped COMPLETE dated September 17 1935 with a single credit for Hammett. 115 leaves mimeograph duplication. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus bound with two gold brads. In a custom clamshell box.

Full pagination available upon request. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] unknown‎

‎The Man in the Glass Booth Original screenplay for the 1975 film‎

‎N.p.: N.p. 1974. Draft script for the 1975 film.

In Manhattan a Jewish man who is a Holocaust survivor is arrested by Israeli agents for war crimes. The trial reveals him to be innocent but also leads to the decline of his mental well being in the courtroom. Maximilian Schell was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

The film version was initially disowned by the playwright likely due to the negative reception and early closure of the play due to public misunderstanding of its meaning. Shaw changed his mind after seeing the finished film but it was by that time too late to add his name to the credits and he died a few years later. Almost completely unavailable for viewing in any form for nearly twenty years the film was remastered and released on DVD in 2010.

Set in New York City and Israel shot on location in New York City and Los Angeles.

Yellow titled wrappers. ‎Krasna, Norman (1909-1984). American screenwriter, playwright, producer and film director.‎

‎WONDERFUL TYPED LETTER SIGNED by the American playwright and film director NORMAN KRASNA to Jean Dalrymple regarding an unidentified play he is writing.‎

‎
Switzerland July 5th 1976. 1976. Fine. - Over 275 words typed on his personal 11-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide stationery with his Swiss address centered at the top. Norman Krasna writes to Jean Dalrymple about his latest play "Hold the presses." he says having rethought the ending. "I had a long searching session with the muse and also a critique from a friend and the three of us have come to the conclusion that the ending is not right." Feeling that his original ending seemed to imply that the girl settled for marriage "as she hasn't got the ability to be a star". "People don't go to the theatre to accept resignation. I prefer the girl on her way to be a star and have the marriage too." Signed "Norman". An apparent phone number is penned at top left of the letter and another spelled out in French at top right. The letter is further briefly annotated on the verso. The top edge of the page is slightly creased and the letter is folded for mailing. Near fine.

The American screenwriter playwirth producer and film director Norman Krasna 1909-1984 was known for his screwball comedies based on a case of mistaken identity. He wrote several successful Broadway plays including "Dear Ruth" and "John Loves Mary" and directed 3 films "The Ambassador's Daughter" "The Big Hangover" and "Princess O'Rourke" all of which he also wrote and was nominated 4 times for screenwriting Academy Awards winning once for "Princess O'Rourke".

The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. ‎Los Angeles: Betnic Productions Inc 1972. Wraps. Very good. Revised Draft of this unproduced screenplay. Veteran producer Frank P. Rosenberg hired Ernest Tidyman 1928-84 to adapt Jeanne Rejaunier's best-selling novel which deals with the glamourous sometimes sleazy life of topflight New York fashion models. The production was ultimately abandoned. However this draft includes casting notes with potential candidates for each role listed in order of preference - for instance the actresses targeted for the role of Charlene include Eleanor Parker Bette Davis Joan Crawford Susan Hayward Ava Gardner Rita Hayworth Anne Baxter and Angela Lansbury - as well as brief bios of the preferred producer Gordon Oliver director Gordon Douglas and production manager Nate Barrager. ‎'The Girl on a Motorcycle' 1968 film starring Alain Delon and Marianne Faithfull. Material relating to arbitration by Jack Pulman for the Writers' Guild of Great Britain of dispute over credits between Jack Cardiff and Ronald Duncan.‎

‎The Writers' Guild of Great Britain 430 Edgware Road London. Two items on Pulman's letterhead 31 Steele's Road London. 1968. Six items relating to Pulman's arbitration including 'a careful breakdown by him of scene continuity of the Bourguignon script the Duncan script and the final shooting script' these three breakdowns Items Two to Four below totalling 8pp. In his four-page arbitration Pulman gives a detailed account of the process of the film's composition of all the more interest as coming from a master screenwriter and contemporary. All six items in good condition lightly aged. ONE: Carbon copy of Pulman's signed four-page 'Arbitration - "GIRL ON A MOTORCYLE" Writers involved - S. Bourguignon Ronald Duncan Jack Cardiff Gillian Freeman'. A full description of the case in fourteen numbered sections giving a great deal of detail regarding the composition of the script beginning with a list of six 'writing stages' and Pulman's reasons for reaching his conclusion. He describes the film as 'a story done very much in the style of “Un Homme et Une Femme†using a very similar continuity of flashback and throught sic track'. On reading through the material presented to him Pulman found that 'one impression emerged clearer than ever – that the final shooting script 6 differed very little from Bourguignon's adaptation which Cardiff says could “never be used on a professional basis.†To see whether this impression was correct or not I made a careful breakdown of scene continuity of the Bouguignon script the Duncan script and the final shooting script and compared them. These are enclosed with this opinion.' The are Items Two to Four below. He does not 'believe that anyone comparing these breakdowns could come to any conclusion other than that the screenplay credit belongs niether sic to Cardiff nor Duncan but solely to Bourguignon'. Since Bourguignon 'seems to be claiming no credit' he proposes to amend the credit to: 'SCREENPLAY by S. Bourguignon. Additional Scenes by Ronald Duncan and Jack Cardiff.' TWO: Two-page typescript headed 'Continuity - BOURGIGNON sic'. Twenty-four points beginning with 'Rebecca rises from her husband's bed puts on her black suit takes her motorcycle and sets off to see her lover Daniel.' Last point: '24. She leaves the cafe and gets on her motor cycle again. She is going very fast. She is killed in a collision.' THREE: Three-page typescript headed 'Ronald DUNCAN - Continuity. Second Draft'. ‎Eric Maschwitz [Albert Eric Maschwitz] (1901-1969), writer, lyricist, screenwriter and BBC broadcaster [W. J. MacQueen-Pope [Wal‎

‎Eric Maschwitz writer and broadcaster. Typed Letter Signed 'Eric' to 'Mac' W. J. MacQueen-Pope suggesting that he write a history of His Majesty's Theatre.‎

‎8 September no year. On letterhead of 23 Bruton Street W.1. London. Maschwitz wrote the lyrics to 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square' and 'These Foolish Things' and was nominated for an oscar for co-writing the screenplay of 'Goodbye Mr Chips'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Twenty-nine lines of text. In fair condition lightly aged. Folded once. Maschwitz begins by congratulating him 'on a really enthralling book! Loved every page of it!' With reference to Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree he explains that the previous day he 'had a talk with old Dennis Grayson who with Mrs Corey Wright is one of Tree's executors. He told me that they had recently opened a dusty old Pall Mall Safe Deposit box containing masses of records etc of His Majesty's Theatre - the "complete works" from 1897 to 1917 and there was so much of interest among them'. Included is an item relating to Claude Rains: 'a call boy's note book with C. Rains written inside it in a boyish hand'. Grayson 'wondered whether you would be interested in doing a book on the Theatre. Of course it wouldn't make anything as grand as Drury Lane but certainly something grander than Daly's'. He makes a few suggestions about topics MP might wish to include in the book including the play 'Balalaika' with 'the cops coming for the backer on the opening night'. If MP is interested 'Grayson who lives up North and comes to town occasionally would be delighted to lunch you and tell you what he has. Let me know and I'll fix it'. MacQueen-Pope does not appear to have taken Grayson up on his offer unless the letter dates from before the 1947 publication of 'Carriages at Eleven'. 8 September [no year]. ‎TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY AMERICAN AUTHOR AND SCREENWRITER ACHMED ABDULLAH.‎

‎New York: circa 1930. 1930. Good. - 41 words typed on an approximately 10 inch high by 8 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead. Signed "A Abdullah". Folded 3 times for mailing. There are several short tears at the folds with some light red staining below the text. There is some light soiling at bottom right and there is a crease & tear to & a small piece out of the bottom right corner. Good.
Abdullah writes to future congressman Seymour Halpern that he is too busy to see anyone but "I am sending by this mail the signed picture to your friend."
Achmed Abdullah who claimed descent from the Russian imperial family and was educated in England emigrated to the United States in the 1910s. He went on to become an American author and screenwriter most noted for his pulp stories of crime mystery and adventure. He wrote screenplays for some successful films and earned an Academy Award nomination for collaborating on the screenplay for the 1935 film "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer".
The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. New York: circa [1930]. unknown‎

‎The Prince and the Pauper‎

‎
Mark Twain original novel; Edwin S. Porter director; Hugh Ford screenwriter; Marguerite Clark starring. The Prince and the Pauper. New York: Capitol Theatre August 13th 1922. Original handbill for a week-long run of the second silent adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper originally released in 1915. Octavo 7 x 9.125 inches; 175 x 232 mm. Single leaf printed both sides with screening information on the recto and a collage with three images from the film and a quote from S. L. "Roxy" Rothafel on the verso. Margins a little wrinkled with a couple soft creases in the corners; two faint fox marks on the recto and just a hint of soiling on the verso. Near fine.

The Prince and the Pauper was initially adapted as a two-reel Edison production in 1909. Famous Players Lasky revisited the source material in 1915 releasing a five-reel feature that November when feature-length film making was less than two years old in the United States. It starred Marguerite Clark in a dual role. By 1922 the conventional shelf-life of a silent film made in 1915 would have long expired likely to be melted down for silver why most films form the silent era are lost. Many of the films from major studios that survived did so because they were hits continuously in demand or because they were forgotten about by the end of their distribution runs either could have been reason enough to book something for a theatre manager as creative as Roxy Rothafel who later opened the Roxy and Radio City Music Hall in New York. The Capitol Theatre opened in October 1919. "Progressive Silent Film List" silentera.com. #10289.
Capitol Theatre, paperback‎

‎Network Original screenplay‎

‎New York: Simcha Productions Inc 1975. Vintage screenplay for the classic film of Watergate-era cynicism about the media and politics with a famous exhortation by rattled newsman Howard Beale for viewers to open their windows and shout "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take this anymore!" Brad bound in Studio Duplicating Service leatherette wrappers with gilt lettering. Title handwritten in black on spine. i 1-112 114-147 pp. printed on rectos only. Page 113 torn out else Very Good overall small horizontal tear to spine light soiling to wraps.
Actor Lance Henriksen's copy with his inscription "Eddie!' on title page; he played an uncredited lawyer. He is best known for his role in the Alien film franchise as the android Bishop. Uncommon.
Changes between Paddy Chayefsky's acclaimed screenplay and the completed film are trims and revisions. A brief scene early on in the screenplay wherein Howard Beale's housekeeper finds him "curled in a position of fetal helplessness on the floor"did not make the film. News stories preceding Howard's first on-air appearance in the screenplay were changed as was the ending. The screenplay ends with "A BANK OF FOUR COLOR TELEVISION MONITORS" sporting headshots of the most famous broadcasters of the era Walter Cronkite John Chancellor Howard K. Smith and Harry Reasoner whereas only one of the monitors in the final cut of the film shows a broadcaster. The other three show Beale dead on the studio floor an airline ad and happy children in a commercial for Life cereal-- as if to say "That's life for you." In a decade now famous for its cynical gritty films this ending still stands out as a monumental downer. Simcha Productions, Inc unknown‎
