Friedkin William director producer; Walon Green screenwriter; Georges Arnaud novel
Sorcerer Original screenplay for the 1977 film
Universal City CA: Universal Pictures 1976. Early Draft script for the 1977 film. At 200 pages this draft is 36 pages longer than the longest of the three we have encountered meaning almost certainly that it is a First Draft or very close.

The plot of William Friedkin's suspense thriller originated with the same Georges Arnaud novel that inspired Henri-Georges Clouzot's French suspense classic "The Wages of Fear" 1953. Roy Scheider Bruno Cremer Francisco Rabal and Amidou play four men who for various reasons cannot return to their own countries. They end up in a dismal South American town where an American oil company is seeking out courageous drivers willing to haul nitroglycerin over 200 miles of treacherous terrain. The four stateless men have nothing to lose and besides they'll be paid $10000 apiece and be granted legal citizenship if they survive. The suspense is almost unbearable at times even outdistancing the tension level of "The Wages of Fear" in certain scenes in particular a famous set piece wherein one of the trucks must cross a rope bridge in the middle of the Amazon-and in the middle of a monsoon. Nominated for an Academy Award.

Gray titled wrappers. Title page present undated with credits for screenwriter Green and novelist Arnaud. 200 leaves xerographically duplicated. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1944. Two vintage studio still photographs from the 1944 film. Nominated for three Academy Awards. Based on John Steinbeck 1943 novella of the same name. Reference numbers are 619-53 black-and-white stamped on verso as "KEY SET" and 619-70 sepia apparently mounted for internal use.

The film follows a group of survivors stranded on a lifeboat following an attack on their merchant ship. The film is the first in Hitchcock's "limited-setting" fims followed by "Rope" Dial M for Murder" and "Rear Window."
