‎Löw, Leopold‎

‎BEN CHANANJA : MONATSSCHRIFT FÜR JÜDISCHE THEOLOGIE. JAHRG. 2 [VOLUME 2 ONLY]‎

‎1st Edition. Later Paper Wrapeprs. 8vo. 584 pages ; 20 cm. In German. Title translates into English as, “Ben Chananja: A Monthly for Jewish Studies. ” The second major volume of the first Jewish periodical published in Hungary. “Judah Leib ‘Leopold’ Löw (1811 – 1875) was a Hungarian rabbi, regarded as the most important figure of Neolog Judaism…Löw early in his career acquired a knowledge of Hungarian, and was the first to introduce it into the synagogue service, his first sermon in that language being printed in 1845. In 1844 he began his literary activity in behalf of the emancipation of the Hungarian Jews, taking the lead in that struggle until its object was attained (1867) . The periodical ‘Ben Chananja, ’ edited by him from 1858 to 1867, was an especially influential factor in this movement. ” (Wikipeida, 2017) “Ben Chananja was a Hungarian German-language periodical published initially in 1844 and then between 1858 and 1867, edited by Leopold Löw. When Löw published what was to be the first Jewish periodical in Hungary, Ben Chananja: Blätter für israelitisch-ungarische Angelegenheiten in 1844, his choice of German was praised by contemporaries as realistic, given that few Hungarian Jews at the time were fluent in Magyar. The quarterly was discontinued after the pilot issue. Löw was more successful in 1858 when he revived the paper in his community of Szeged at a time when no other Jewish periodicals were being published in Hungary. It bore the same title (the editor did not clarify the significance of the title but it clearly hinted at his admiration for the Talmudic sage) , and appeared first as a monthly, from 1861 as a weekly, and from 1865 on as a biweekly (subtitled für jüdische Theologie) . ” (YIVO, 2017) OCLC lists as many as 28 copies worldwide. Front end page is torn. A few damp stains throughout. Otherwise very good- condition. (GER-59-60)‎

‎FUN LETSTEN CHURBN [FUN LETZTEN KHURBAN / KHURBN / CHURBAN] : TSAYTSHRIFT FÜR GESHIKHTE FUN YIDISHN LEBN BETN NATSI-REZSHIM. FROM THE LAST EXTERMINATION: JOURNAL FOR THE HISTORY OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE DURING THE NAZI REGIME. Nr. 5. May 1947.‎

‎Small 8vo; First Edition. Paper Wrappers, small 8vo, 106 pages. Includes 11 photos with captions in English & Yiddish. One of 8000 issued. In Yiddish with English Cover, table of contents, & photo captions. Important journal lasting 10 issues which written & published by Jewish DPs themselves to document crimes and survival in the Holocaust. The publisher's decision to include the English table of contents, probably in part to insure the journal's use in future war crimes trials, makes these first hand accounts especially user-friendly today, almost 60 years later. Robinson & Friedman #1247: "The Historical Commission [was] established in 1945 under the auspices of the Central Committee of Liberated Jews in the U. S. Zone. [It] Ceased operations early in 1949. Details of the activities of the Munich center can be found in No. 1247 [Fun Letsten Churbn]..." Hagit Lavsky notes in the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (Gutman, ed., 1990, p. 383) that, "Commemoration and documentation projects [by Jewish DPs] included the work of the Tsentraler Historisher Komisiye (Central Historical Commission), established in December 1945 by the Central Committee in Munich, to assist in bringing Nazi criminals to trial. A network of regional committees was set up under the commission's auspices whose task it was to take evidence and collect documentary material, including material on DPs. In August 1946, the commission published the first issue of the monthly FUN LETZTEN HURBAN." Published under DP-Publications License US-E-3 OMGB, Information Control Division. Articles include: The con-camp [i.e. concentration camp] prisoners march to Tirol, by I.K. [Israel Kaplan?]; March from Kaufering-camps, by I[sreal]. Kaplan; From Schwabhausen to Dachau, by Dr. L.
