‎S.l. [Paris], s.d. (1760-1767) in-folio, [2] ff. n. ch., 290 pp., un f. n. ch., le tout couvert de graphies à plusieurs mains, régulières et très lisibles, peau de truie retournée teinte en vert, à lacets, dos lisse muet, tranches mouchetées de rouge (reliure de l'époque). Coins abîmés.‎

‎Commencé le 10 août 1760 et clos le 2 décembre 1767, ce compte répertorie tous les secours accordés par les deux compagnies de charité actives sur la paroisse de Saint-Louis-en-l'Île, de Paris. Il s'organise en 3 colonnes : motif ; recette ; dépense. Les recettes et dépenses se suivent, et ne sont pas verticalement séparées. Les motifs donnent les noms des pauvres bénéficiaires (pour les dépenses).Il est précédé par une page de délibérations des assemblées des compagnies remettant au curé Aubry les titres et comptes leur appartenant ; et par une autre page donnant un extrait des statuts du 21 juillet 1714, concernant les comptes. L'article septième qui termine cette copie est à citer intégralement, car il donne une définition claire de la notion de "pauvre honteux" qui peut recouvrir, selon les époques et les lieux, diverses situations : "L'on réputera pauvres honteux ceux qui ont eu des charges ou employs honnêtes, et qui auront tenu ou tiendront actuellement boutique en qualité de marchands ou artisans de quelques corps de métiers, et ceux qui peuvent raisonnablement avoir honte de demander publiquement leurs besoins, à cause de leur profession ou de leur naissance ; à moins qu'ils n'ayent eux-mêmes découvert leur misère en demandant ouvertement".Jean-Thomas Aubry (1714-1785), docteur de Sorbonne, fut curé de Saint-Louis-en-l'Île de décembre 1759 à sa mort, après un seul emploi de vicaire (à Saint-Eustache, de 1739 à 1758). Les dispositions prises par les deux compagnies suivent donc de près sa prise de possession de la paroisse. Il était par ailleurs bibliophile et collectionneur dans le goût des cabinets de curiosités d'histoire naturelle ("Ce curé qui avait toujours eu du goût, on pouvait même dire une sorte de passion pour l'histoire naturelle, possédait un cabinet très-curieux composé des oiseaux les plus rares", comme le précise Jean Hardy dans son journal). C'était aussi un pasteur attentif aux pauvres de sa paroisse, ce qui rejoint l'objet de notre registre : après sa mort, le produit de la vente de ses livres, de ses estampes et de ses tableaux, de ses objets d’histoire naturelle et de ses effets précieux, ainsi que ses propres économies, fut légué aux pauvres de sa paroisse par testament. Pour la (toute) petite histoire, il fut le confesseur de Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1747-1793), duc de Chartres, futur Philippe-Égalité, ce qui aurait normalement dû l'occuper à plein temps.Cf. A scarce Guadalajara imprint that comprises a series of documents relating to a church-and-state kerfuffle between the local diocese and the government over the presence of a loyalty oath in the state constitution. The council of the diocese worried that having their clerics swear loyalty to the state would force them to ignore or abjure their vows to the church and therefore objected to the presence of the oath in the constitution. They also worry more broadly about the subjugation of church authority and finances to the power of the state should such an oath be administered to its members. The work comprises various prayers acts of contrition and instructions for completing the ritual and also prints a woodcut of the Mary and the baby Jesus surrounded by angels the typical depiction of this version of the Virgin Mary. ‎Queretaro 1825. Still very good. 42035pp. Contemporary sheep spine gilt leather label. Moderate wear to corners and edges; boards and spine scuffed. Occasional minor staining and foxing. Accomplished in a small but highly legible script. An extensive manuscript compilation of Catholic doctrines teachings and sermons assembled in Mexico during the early 19th century. The author is unidentified but an engraved indulgence dated 1804 from the Colegio de Santa Cruz in Queretaro is tipped onto the manuscript title page verso leading to the supposition that this work originated at that date and location. The indulgence bears an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Latin phrase "Columba Mea in Forminibus Petrae" and promises various lengths of indulgence from several of the bishops of colonial Mexico. The initial 115 pages contains over thirty entries comprising the author's lessons on church doctrine and other teachings on subjects such as faith hope charity neighborly love marriage and much else. Each entry is headed by a short biblical quotation from which the text takes its prompt. The remaining 340 pages contain over fifty original sermons on a wide variety of topics each also as is traditional with a Bible passage as its inspiration. A detailed table of contents follows the title page. The final four entries are in an altered hand and were added later with last being dated "Zalapa 1825." Extensive contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper verso. Light edge wear spine and boards well rubbed. Initial gathering coming loose. Moderate tanning and scattered foxing. Second edition after the first of 1835 of this extensive bilingual catechism on the "principal mysteries of our holy faith." The question-and-answer text printed in Spanish and Nahuatl on facing pages provides basic explanations of the central tenets and practices of Catholicism. The present copy bears an inscription from Mexican theologian and polymath Agustin Rivera to a friend and fellow teacher at the Liceos de Padre Guerra in Lagos de Moreno Bernardo Reyna. Rivera published many religious historical and pedagogical texts in Lagos many for use in his school and on the subjects of native culture and history. ‎Mexico City 1807. Very good. Letterpress broadside illustrated with large engraving 12 x 8.25 inches. Minor wear and foxing engraving printed slightly off register. An evocative and rare Mexican broadside relating the story of Italian Jesuit Francesco de Geronimo 1642-1716. The portrait was executed by Francisco Gordillo also the chief assayer of the Mexico City mint. This broadside was produced the year following Francesco's beatification in 1806; he was later canonized as a saint in 1839. This "Very Light Sketch of the Life of Francisco" includes a biographical history of Geronimo as well as a physical description and information on his beatification and burial. <br /> <br /> "St. Francis wanted to be sent to preach in the Far East but the Jesuit authorities wanted him to stay in Naples which was the centre of his apostolic labours. He worked through the 'Oratorio delle Missioni' an organization of working men which functioned as a sickness benefit and funeral society. His preaching was famous: sometimes he would bring a skull to the pulpit at others scourge his bare shoulders with an iron chain until they bled. He established hostels for reformed prostitutes and their children. ‎Mexico 1760. Very good plus. 3pp. on a bifolium completed in manuscript. Contemporary ink signatures and original paper seal at bottom left of first leaf recto; extensive manuscript notations on second leaf. Previously folded; light edge wear and creasing. Minor tanning and soiling. An attractively illustrated and scarce example of a confraternity patent for a religious order in mid-18th century Mexico. This bifolium confers membership to and lists the benefits for those inducted into the congregation of the Parish of San Sebastian and was filled out and given to a woman Teresa Ruiz on October 25 1761. The first leaf recto is attractively printed containing a skillful engraved illustration of the Virgin Mary accompanied by St. Joseph and St. Sebastian on each side with Jesus holding the Eucharist in a cloud over head and decorated with numerous detailed printers' ornaments. The text on this page prints the principal benefits of membership which include assistance with all burial rites upon death twenty-five pesos paid to surviving family following the same and inclusion in all masses said for the congregation as well as in all graces and indulgenced received by it. The interior two pages print a list of sixteen indulgences conferred upon the congregation by Pope Benedict XIV. Most interestingly three manuscript notes each dated September 1807 record that the female recipient of the patent passed away earlier that month in the Convento de Jesus Maria that she received burial rites in accordance with her membership and that twenty-five pesos was paid out by the treasury of the congregation. Scarce we locate one other copy of this patent at the University of Pennsylvania; the Newberry hold a copy of a later edition with a different illustration. A very interesting document of popular piety and local religious organization in 18-century Mexico. unknown‎

Attractive illustrated verse broadside that praises the Virgin of Guadalupe for delivering independence to the Mexican people. Printed within a woodcut border on the sheet are a woodcut of the Virgin and a sonnet whose initial stanza reads " Quíen sino tú dulcísima María / Libró con mano fuerte al Mexícano / del acero feróz de su Paisano / Qué cual á un estrangero lo veía" The Virgin of Guadalupe became associated with the cause of Mexican independence following the use of her image on the banners of the insurgent army raised by Father Miguel Hidalgo in 1810. An interesting confluence of Mexican verse revolutionary sentiment and popular piety with only a small handful of copies in OCLC. unknown‎

S. l., 1789. 2 tomes en 2 volumes in-8 de : I/ xv pp., (1) p. bl., 168 pp.; II/ 207 pp. Conservé dans ses couvertures muettes d’attente, cote de bibliothèque sur le plat supérieur des volumes, non rognés. Brochure d’origine. 220 x 140 mm.‎

‎Édition de l’année de l’originale de ce livre qui fit scandale. Barbier, Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes, II, 831 ; Peignot, Dictionnaire des livres condamnés au feu, I, 321. Il fut condamné, par arrêt du 10 février 1789, à être lacéré et brûlé au pied du grand escalier, par la main du bourreau. « Mirabeau (1749-1791) obtient, grâce à Calonne, une mission secrète en Prusse. Dans une correspondance chiffrée, il raconte à l’abbé de Périgord (le futur Talleyrand) les intrigues de la cour de Prusse. Elle sera publiée sous le titre ‘Histoire secrète de la cour de Berlin’ et fera scandale. Quand il revient en France, le mouvement révolutionnaire vient de commencer. Il y participe aussitôt. Calonne refusant de l’employer à nouveau, il s’attaque à lui dans sa ‘Dénonciation de l’agiotage’ (1787). Rejeté par la noblesse, il se présente aux élections et est élu par le Tiers État à la fois à Marseille et à Aix, pour laquelle il optera. A cette époque, il fonde ‘Le Journal des États-Généraux’. Un des premiers, Mirabeau réclamera avec insistance la convocation de ces derniers. Une réputation douteuse l’a précédé aux États Généraux ; on le croit prêt à toutes besognes, et les représentants du Tiers États se montrent réservés sinon méfiants. D’autre part, il a contre lui la cour, les ministres, la noblesse et le clergé. Sa tâche s’annonce difficile. Isolé à l’Assemblée, Mirabeau est pourtant un des rares députés à posséder un plan et une méthode, sans compter ses dons exceptionnels d’orateur. Jean Dominique Mellot et Elisabeth Quéral (N°940) lui ont même trouvé des variantes de prénom : Guillaume-Denis-Romain-Emmanuel ; il ne fut pas maintenu comme imprimeur en 1811 mais breveté libraire ensuite, l’impression de ce minuscule remonte donc et très probablement, en raison de la typographie, à la fin du XVIIIe s. Ex-dono manuscrit sur le premier contreplat : “Donné à Melle Adèle par Mr Gitly 1er janvier 1819”. Bel exemplaire. A échappé à Grand-Carteret. Après de multiples recherches, nous n’avons pas réussi à identifier un autre exemplaire de cet ouvrage. L’exemplaire et l’étui sont en parfait état.‎
