'The Hope of the Katzekopes' was written by Reverend Paget with the intention of guiding young minds towards a more wholesome morality as the author believed that this was lacking in other fiction at the time. It was intended to exercise empathy in children and to guide them away from selfishness. Written by Reverend Francis Edward Paget who was the chapplain to the bishop of Bath and Wells and who restored Elford Church. Some of his other works include 'Lucretia' 'The Pageant' 'Tales of the Village Children' and 'Some Records of the Ashtead Estate and of its Howard Possessors'. With six illustrated head pieces throughout. Condition: In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally sound. Light dampstaining to the boards causing discolouration. A couple of light markings to the boards. Minor sunning to the spine. Small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Rear hinge is strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown '1898'. Prior owner's tidy sketching of the Union Jack to the font pastedown. Light offsetting to the recto to the front endpaper and to the verso to the rear endpaper. Prior owner's label to the verso to the front endpaper 'John & Christie Dore 18 Whitehall Watchet Somerset TA23 0BD'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half title page 'To . . . McClitock with . . . love 5th of Dec 1914'. Internally generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and handling mark. Textblock from pages 17 to 96 have been cut to the bottom to the fore edge. Puncture mark through the textblock however not affecting text. Page 1/2 is lifting but remains attached. Small chip to the head of page 35/36. Last line on page 159 'And so my story ends' has scoring marks around it with attempted removal and is lifting from the bottom. This mid 19th century illustrated leather bound book Father Francis Mahoney's The Reliques of Father Prout is a reprint by Bohn's Illustrated Library in the 1860s originally published in 1836.<br /><br />Title: The Reliques of Father Prout Late P.P. of Watergrasshill in the County of Cork Ireland.<br />Author: Reverend Francis Mahoney Collected and Arranged by Oliver Yorke Esq.<br />Publisher: H.G. Bohn York Street Covent Garden London.<br />Illustrator: Alfred Croquis<br />Edition: New Edition Revised and Largely Augmented.<br />Binding/description: Binding by Whitman Bennett New York gilt-decorated 3/4 green leather with five raised bands green cloth covered boards gray marbled endpapers upper gilt leaf edge trifold frontispiece profusely illustrated text.<br /><br />Author Note: Father Mahoney had quite a sense of humor. He professed discovery of the originals in Latin Greek or mediaeval French of popular modern poems and songs. Many of these jeux d'esprit were collected as Reliques of Father Prout. He pretended that these poems had been found in Fr. Prout's trunk after his death.<br /><br />Binder Note: Whitman Bennett was a successful journalist assistant drama editor of the New York Times and in the theater was a production manager for Famous-Lasky and Paramount Studios before he entered the rare book business. His firm Bennett Book Studios established in 1924 specialized in American and English literature and fine bindings. Collectors came to depend on the Bennett Studios to stock first editions and standard sets of the works of writers such as Hawthorne Byron Dickens Clemens Whittier Poe Melville Emerson Washington Irving and Henry James.<br />Dimensions: 2ʺW × 5.25ʺD × 7.5ʺH.<br />Condition Notes: Near fine; gently sunned/darkened spine cover gilt loss at end of upper gilt leaf edge some light and sparse sporadic foxing throughout text in peripheral areas light-moderately age-toned pages strong square spine.
