‎Derry Northern Ireland.: John Mccolgan. Good. 1936. Hardcover. 24mo - 14.5 x 8 cm.; x - 6 - 538 - 11 - 1 pp. Black textured cloth with gold lettering on a panelled spine and the front board. Textured black end papers with gold dentilled border decorations on the versos of the covers both front and back. Approbations present and the date given is that of the approbations. Title continued: "Containing moreover a collection of approved prayers compiled from the best sources in accordance with all recent pontifical decrees." No copyright date but the church calendar starts with 1940. In all likelihood this particular edition is after that prepared by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. John F. Galvin rather than the more common one by Fr. Sylvester Juergen. Frontis illustration of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome. All text with the exception of the introduction contents and the gospel interludes within the text are bilingual Latin and English in a 2 column per page. presentation. The supplement the last 11 pages consists of those masses and prayers which are particular to Ireland. Two marker ribbons present though frayed at the ends. All edges are gilt and gauffered with some hand painted colouring on the designs. The colouring here is faded and the edge gilding is slightly dulled but only slightly. The blank preliminaries and blank back pages have been doodled on in green pencil by a child. Fortunately that is all that they turned their artistic talents to. Otherwise the text is quite clean and the binding of the text block is solid with minor weaknesses noted at the front and back end paper hinges though these have been repaired. The external gilded lettering is faded though quite readable. Previous owner's dated inscription on the first blank preliminary. All together a very nice copy of what one could call an extremely scarce edition. . John Mccolgan hardcover‎

A most unusual combination! "Januarius Maria Sarnelli 12 September 1702 � 30 June 1744 was an Italian Roman Catholic priest and a professed member from the Redemptorists. Sarnelli was one of Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori's earliest companions and was also a prolific writer during his life; he wrote on a range of religious topics which still survive. He wanted to become a Jesuit though was dissuaded from this before working in the Hospital of the Incurables where his call to the priesthood blossomed. His apostolic zeal knew no limits: he preached missions and aided his friend Liguori in his work; he tended to the sick and helped to get girls out of prostitution despite the threats levelled against him. Sarnelli's fame for holiness was a well-known fact during his life and his beatification cause did not open until 1861 in Naples; formal introduction came in 1874 and he was named as Venerable on 2 December 1906. Pope John Paul II beatified him in mid-1996." - See Wikipedia "Justice John O'Hagan was a Lawyer and man of letters born at Newry County Down Ireland 19 March 1822; died near Dublin 10 November 1890. He was educated in the day-school of the Jesuit Fathers Dublin and in Trinity College graduating in 1842. Though he made many friendships in Trinity he was always an earnest advocate of Catholic University education. In this spirit he contributed to the "Dublin Review" 1847 an article which the Catholic Truth Society of Ireland has reprinted under the title "Trinity College No Place for Catholics". Later he contributed to the same Review a criticism of Thomas Carlyle's system of thought which Carlyle tells in his Diary "gave him food for reflection for several days". In 1842 he was called to the Bar and joined the Munster Circuit. In 1861 he was appointed a Commissioner of National Education and in 1865 he became Q. C. The same year he married Frances daughter of the first Lord O'Hagan. After Gladstone had passed his Irish Land Act he chose Mr. O'Hagan as the first judicial head of the Irish Land Commission making him for this purpose a judge of Her Majesty's High Court of Justice. This elevation was a tribute not only to his legal attainments and judicial standing but to the place he held in the esteem of his countrymen. He was an earnest Catholic as is shown in many of his writings such as "The Children's Ballad Rosary". VG."William Bernard Ullathorne 7 May 1806 � 21 March 1889.In 1823 Ullathorne entered the monastery of Downside Abbey taking the vows in 1825. He was ordained priest in 1831 and in 1833 went to New South Wales as vicar-general to Bishop William Placid Morris 1794�1872 whose jurisdiction extended over the Australian missions. It was mainly Ullathorne who caused Pope Gregory XVI to establish the hierarchy in Australia. Ullathorne returned to Britain in 1836 met Bishop Murphy and enlisted for the Australian mission. After another visit to Australia Ullathorne settled in England in 1841 taking charge of the Roman Catholic mission at Coventry. He was consecrated bishop in 1847 as Vicar Apostolic of the Western District in succession to Bishop C.M. Baggs 1806�1845 but was transferred to the Central District in the following year.
