A bit of history on these small pamphlets. During the great exodus from Ireland there was a great deal of concern on the part of the Irish clergy both in Ireland and America about the faith of the emigrants once more was learned about life in New York Baltimore Chicago and Montreal / Toronto. Many such small pamphlets were assembled in a great hurry and very cheaply to be given to the emigrants and immigrants arriving at Iles d'Orleans or Ellis Island or leaving from Cobh. Very very few have survived to this day and one is struck by their simple and childlike directness and clarity. Terrible times indeed. . Kelly, Hedian & Piet paperback

Professionally rebound in a wine red cloth with the original paper cover pasted onto the front board and a matching in form and style label affixed to the spine. Originally published as a folio sized volume with paper covers. Authored and edited by the senior conservator of the rare book section of the Dijon library from the manuscripts and individual pages in the library collection plus additional references made to the scriptorium holdings of the Cistercian monastery at Citeaux. 83 pages of text including 18 pages of plate descriptions a one page table of contents followed by the 102 pages of reproduced plates. The text pages are unopened on the head edge. The reproductions themselves are printed on a high quality cream coloured woven paper of a heavy weight with the image on the recto and the versos being blank. The plates themselves are affixed to binding stubs and all are still very solidly attached. The reproductions themselves are a monotone sepia in overall appearance with a very high quality reproduction of the intricate details and illuminative touches. Both fore edge corners head and tail show some slight creasing but no folding. The paper is evenly toned to a very light ecru colour with no spotting or foxing being noted. All text block edges head fore and tail are untrimmed. The remounted front cover shows some rubbing and discolouration along with a rubbed/scuffed section on the lower spine corner of the front paste down cover where a sticker of some sort may have been attached at one time and there is a library stamp on the title page plus a pencilled catalogue number. The library was the non-circulating library at the Trappist Monastery of Notre Dame du Lac a Cistercian reference library in the province of Quebec and shows little if any use. The introduction for this volume runs up to page 107 followed by the text which begins with the original preliminary writings and preface: "Lettre de Castor �v�que d'Apt � Cassien abb� de Marseille" "Lettre-pr�face de Cassien � Castor �v�que d'Apt" and then the text. The covers are soiled and stained tide marks as is the spine which is worn on the bottom half and the top spine corner of the back cover has a small tear. The text paper overall is browned with age though not brittle. Previous owner's gift bookplate Bishop of Prince Albert Saskatchewan is affixed to the first blank page. First published in 1843 this is the third edition New Edition on the title page and contains Newman's letter dated Advent 1871 addressed to Rev. Richard William Church the advertisement from the first edition and the preface for this the third edition. Aside from minor changes in wording of the original text this third edition contains a new sermon #III "Evangelical Sanctity: The Perfection of Natural Virtue" preached on Sunday March 6 1831 that was never included in the original edition. The book shows mild wear to the externals light wear to the corners and spine tips and the gilded lettering is still quite bright. Some spotting on the back best seen in reflected light. Old bookseller's label The Galignani Library of Paris and Nice is on the front paste down end paper. The interior is very clean. the binding is good overall though the end paper hinges show tearing more so in the back one and binding itself is cracked in 3 or 4 places though still very solid. With an introduction by Cardinal Bourne the Archbishop of Westminster and a foreword on the call to contemplation by the Lord Bishop of Plymouth. Written just after the end of the first world war Cardinal Bourne has this to say: "There are at the present day so many souls not only those consecrated to God in the priesthood and in the cloister but among men and women of every rank and position in the world who need only a little encouragement in order to unite themselves more completely to our Lord. By such union not only would their own sanctificati on be rapidly promoted but their influence for good upon their own immediate world would be enormously increased". Previous owner's name on the front free end paper and an old bookseller's label on the back paste down end paper. The externals show only mild wear with the exception of the lower spine which is worn and has a 4 cm spilt in the front joint. The spine itself is faded. The interior pages are browned or age toned with a few having small dog eared creases otherwise very clean. The binding is a tad shaken though still solid and sound.
