Shahan was the professor of Church history at the Catholic University of Washington DC. The author's intent was to arouse a wider interest in the one thousand years of history in question by relating incidents and describing more mundane or everyday parts of life from those times while drawing parallels to the present day. Minor marginalia is present in the form of checkmarks numbers and pencil strokes in the fore edge margin. The boards are moderately shelf worn with bumped and rubbed lower corners minor soiling and scuffing to the boards and mild wear to the spine tips. The front free end paper has been removed and both front and back hinge have been re-enforced with hinged linen tape. Aside from that the binding is quite solid and sound. . The text block head edge is dyed a matching green as issued. Fr. Drinkwater was a diocesan inspector of schools in Birmingham and as such developed the "Sower" scheme of catechetical instruction. This volume includes 25 essays all of which had been previously published in various journals from 1926 to 1934. The book shows a whisper of shelf wear to the externals. Previous owner's name blacked out on both the half title and the title page. Otherwise very clean with a sound binding. The dust jacket a rather fragile affair to start with is quite worn on the edges darkened on the spine and with material missing on the spine folds and the top edge of the back panel. .
