12mo., on laid paper, with engraved portrait frontispiece and 3 engraved plates; contemporary calf, expertly rebacked in calf to style, original red lather label laid down, a remarkably bright, clean, crisp copy. The frontispiece is Phinn's medallion portrait of the author, first published in Donaldson's edition of the Poetical Works in 1772. The plates (also by Phinn) are placed to head books IV, VIII and IX. This edition includes, in addition to the poem, the Preface (by Lackington), the Life (by Newton) augmented with extracts from Toland and Birch, Barrow's 'In Paradisum Amissam', Marvell's 'On Paradise Lost', a description of the verse and full index. This edition is selected for comment by Professor John T. Shawcross in his address celebrating the acquisition of the Robert J. Wickenheiser collection of Miltoniana by the Thomas Cooper Library of the University of South Carolina (2006), together with an even more elusive companion volume. EXTREMELY SCARCE. ESTC N32815. 2 vols., 12mo., with fine engraved and printed titles, and a total of 8 engraved plates after Westall (most original tissue guards present), some minimal offsetting from plates; ORIGINAL BOARDS, very neatly rebacked to style, ORIGINAL PRINTED PAPER LABELS PRESERVED (labels chipped and worn but virtually all lettering entirely legible), uncut, boards mildly age-stained with a few old tape marks, else a most attractive and remarkably clean, crisp set in tastefully restored publisher's binding. The engraved titles, all after Westall and dated 1816, are by Engleheart (Vol. I: Paradise Regained) and Rhodes (Vol. II: Minor Poems). The fine engraved and captioned plates are also after Westall and dated 1816. In the first volume, the plates stand before Paradise Lost (Finden), Samson Agonistes (Romney) and Comus (Heath); in the second, the plates stand before Lycidas (Engleheart), L'Allegro (Heath), Il Penseroso (Mitan), Sonnets (Heath) and Odes (Finden).In the first volume Paradise Regained is paginated by line number only; the other works (including Arcades) are all separately paginated. In the second volume the pagination is continuous (including the Index).Something of a bibliographical puzzle here. The two volumes were clearly published as a set (vide the publisher's labels) but we can find no clear record of them as such. Volume I appears to be unrecorded by Stevens, falling as it does between Sharpe's first edition of 1809 and his quite distinct two-volume edition of 1827. Volume II would appear to be a later issue of Stevens 264 (who records the first edition thus as 1817 despite the dating on the engraved title). He makes the point that Vol. II was 'bound with his Paradise Regained, 1817' but lists no printings in 1819. These complexities notwithstanding, a scarce and delightful pair in well-nigh original period binding.

François-Augustin Paradis de Moncrif Paris 1687 - 1770 was a writer librettist choreographer playwright and poet of the Académie Française. François-Augustin de Paradis de Moncrif was the perfect type of the man of the world of the eighteenth century: with a pleasant face pleasant manners and a great deal of wit he was immediately sought after in the most aristocratic circles where his qualities as a fencer introduced him and where he made a place for himself by his many talents. At the same time a poet a musician and a good actor he was prized in particular for those social entertainments that were then in fashion. An accomplished courtier he knew how to show himself to be devout to the Queen at Versailles and cheerful and full of spirit in the city. In this work Moncrif maintains that nothing is more important than pleasing and that everyone has the means to achieve it provided he knows how to use the passions and shortcomings of his interlocutor.The work consists of two parts: the first deals with the necessity of pleasing; the second is presented as a mini-treatise on the education of children: "Le Pouvoir de L'Education et le Merite Personnel" pp. 105-143 of Volume 2 intended for children. Moncrif was imposed on the French Academy by the Duke of Orléans and the Count of Clermont in 1733. The Academy was much criticized for having elected him. Moncrif supported the election of Voltaire. He was also a member of the Berlin Academy. IN FRENCH. London: Golden Cockerel Press 1961. First edition thus; number 8 of 100 copies specially bound by E. W. Hiscox. Moncrif 1687-1770 was a French writer courtier and academician now best known for his Histoire des Chats first published in 1727. In letter form Moncrif discusses the role of cats throughout history and his work can be read both as a satire of pedantic academic writing and a sincere tribute to the domesticated feline. "Let us calm ourselves. one day we shall see the merits of Cats generally recognized. It is impossible that we should not come to feel that in our Cat we possess a friend who is the best of company an admirable Pantomimist a born Astrologer a perfect Musician in short the union of the talents & the graces" p. 104-5. Tall quarto. 10 full-page illustrations by Coypel taken from the first edition in 1727. Original dark blue and red morocco titles and publisher's device to spine gilt cat design to front board gilt top edge gilt other untrimmed. Housed in a dark blue cloth slipcase. Numerous collotype plates after etchings designed by Charles Antoine Coypel for the first edition of 1727. No dust jacket. Fine. 187 pages.</p><p>#25 of 100 specially-bound copies.</p><p>Inscribed on front free endpaper in Medford Oregon in 1973 by the translator with a small caricature of a cat.</p><p>Laid in is a Polaroid photograph of Bretnor and his wife taken by the recipient of the inscription with a brief description of the circumstances.</p><p>This attractive volume was one of the final productions of the Golden Cockerel Press.</p> The Golden Cockerel Press hardcover
