‎Summary Abscondi eloquium tuum in corde meo, Thy word have I hid in mine heart (Ps 119, 11). Under this title, colleagues, disciples and friends of Gilbert Dahan have decided, on the initiative and under the direction of Annie Noblesse, to address him a collection of M langes in homage to his scientific work and the profound renewal he has brought to various fields of research: the phenomenology of medieval liturgical games, relations between Jewish intellectuals and Christians in the Middle Ages, and medieval Christian exegesis. Based on his interest in medieval exegesis, its history and reception, they offer twenty-one contributions, classified under five headings: elucidating, glossing and commenting, interpreting, conferring and preaching. A study of the musical setting of Ps 101 by Pierre C sar Abeille (1674-1733), whose works appeared in a manuscript of the Biblioth que nationale de France, also pays tribute to the musician and music lover to whom this book is dedicated. The volume also includes a list of Gilbert Dahan's works and publications. Abscondi eloquium tuum in corde meo, J'ai ton parler reserr en mon cueur (Ps 119, 11). ‎Raimundus Lullus, Fernando Dom nguez Reboiras (ed), Jordi Gay Estelrich (ed)‎

‎Opera latina XL (76-79). Parisiis anno 1298 composita‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, lxxxv + 610 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Illustrations:1 col., 3 tables b/w., Language(s):Latin, Spanish, German. ISBN 9782503606385.‎

‎Summary During his second stay in Paris (1297-1299), Ramon Llull developed an extraordinary literary activity writing 16 works, some of them of considerable length. His attention was once again focused on the presentation of the Art, either to summarize it in accordance with the new changes he had introduced (beginning with the Tabula generalis, op. 53, ROL XXVII), or to present it as a method of renewal of the particular sciences (astronomy and geometry) or as an instrument in the debate on the errors condemned by the bishop of Paris in 1277. The four works presented in this volume are examples of this activity. The Disputatio Eremitae et Raimundi (op. 76) not only represents Llull's closest approximation to the university style of studying the science of theology, based on the Sentences of Peter Lombard, but also the most radical application of his Art as opposed to any discussion fed by the exegesis of "auctoritates". In Arbor philosophiae amoris (op. 77), on the other hand, the application of the Art follows the intent of his previous Ars amativa boni (op. 46, ROL XXIX), thus revealing the intimate connection between the austerity of the artistic language and the exuberance of the contemplative language, the true hallmark of Lullian mysticism. The Consolatio Venetorum (op. 78) illustrates the innovative approach that the Lullian project offers for the moral and political life of the Church. There is no medieval Latin manuscript tradition of the Cantus Raimundi (op. 79). ‎Vatican I, Infallible or Neglectable? Historical and Theological Approaches to the Event and Reception of the First Vatican Council‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 348 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503601717.‎

‎Summary On 20 October 1870 pope Pius IX adjourned the First Vatican Council, because of the Italian Rissorgimento troops approaching the city of Rome. Given that the Council had only opened less than a year prior, on 8 December 1869, the act was emblematic. The council, as the Catholic Church's protective response against all things new - rationalism, liberalism, naturalism, materialism, and pantheism - was overtaken by history. Given its premature end not all documents prepared were completed and those that were promulgated, became among the most controversial documents in the nineteenth and twentieth-century Catholic Church, strongly defining its relations to other Christian confessions and modernity. Similarly, around one hundred years after the suspension of the First Vatican Council its historical and theological study was overtaken by the event of the Second Vatican Council, known for its rapprochement to the modern world. The history and results of the First Vatican Council were either forgotten or reinterpreted in light of this subsequent council's decisions. In light of the 150th anniversary of this council, the editors and authors of this volume set themselves the goal of re-examining this tradition of historical and theological reception (and forgetting) of the First Vatican Council. ‎Marsilius of Padua. Between History, Politics, and Philosophy‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 440 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503601335.‎

‎Summary Marsilius of Padua (c. 1275-c. 1342) was one of the most influential and controversial political thinkers of the Middle Ages. He is best known for his seminal text Defensor Pacis (1324) in which he attacks the papal theory of plenitude of power and defends an idea of political community based on the strict separation of political and religious authority. Marsilius' work lies at the crossroads of different disciplines, ranging from political philosophy to civil and canon law, to medicine. Indeed, he presents an original synthesis of several contemporary themes and traditions such as Aristotelianism, Augustinianism, the debate on Franciscan property, the communal tradition of the Italian city-states, ecclesiology, medicine, and astrology. This edited volume analyses the life and thought of Marsilius of Padua in his own context and beyond. Gathering many of the leading experts in Marsilian studies across different national and linguistic traditions working today, this volume has two main goals. First, it aims to bring together experts who come from distinct fields in order to investigate the many branches of knowledge present in Defensor Pacis without losing sight of Marsilius as a comprehensive theorist. Second, the volume aims to shed new light on one of the most neglected aspects in Marsilian studies: the Marsilian influence, i.e., his impact in the early modern period during the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, up to twentieth century. ‎Andrew of Saint Victor, Commentary on Isaiah‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 492 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Latin, Hebrew. ISBN 9782503605050.‎

‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, founded in 1108, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "according to the Hebrew." This translation makes this work accessible in English for the first time. The source text of this volume was published in 2021 by Frans van Liere (Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis, 53C). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. ‎Peter of Ireland, Writings on Natural Philosophy. Commentary on Aristotle?s On Length and Shortness of Life and the Determinatio Magistralis‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 226 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503605685.‎

‎Summary Peter of Ireland (Petrus de Ybernia) was born sometime around the beginning of the thirteenth century in Ireland, probably of a Norman family. He probably left Ireland aged around age 15 to pursue his studies abroad. His interest in medical and scientific questions would suggest a stay at Oxford, whereas his approach to logic would suggest a Parisian influence. By the middle of the century he was Professor of Logic and Natural Philosophy at the University at Naples. Peter is perhaps one of the best known of medieval Irish thinkers on the continent owing to the fact that he was held to be the teacher of the young Thomas Aquinas at Naples University from 1239-44. As such, it would be he who, in all likelihood, first introduced Thomas to the study of Aristotle and perhaps also to the commentaries of Avicenna and Averroes. The works presented here date from at least a decade later, and relate to lectures given at Naples in the 1250s and 1260s. The extent to which he was held in respect by his contemporaries is to be seen in his solution (determinatio) to the disputed question on the origin of the design of an animal's body which was held before King Manfred around 1260. It was, perhaps the culmination of a famous scholarly career. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 407 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: French. ISBN 9782503606286.‎

‎Ps. Thomas Gallus, Declan A. Lawell (ed)‎

‎Three Writings on Mystical Theology: Exposition of the Mystical Theology, Commentary on the Canticle of Canticles, On the Seven Steps of Contemplation. With Accompanying Translations and an Introduction‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 533 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503607337.‎

‎Summary This volume contains a newly-edited exposition on the Mystical Theology contained in MS UV6 of the Biblioteca degli Intronati in Siena. The MS attributes the work to the abbot of Vercelli (Thomas Gallus), but this is shown to be a false attribution. A commentary on the Canticle of Canticles has also been attributed to Thomas Gallus but argued against by J. Barbet in Brepols' SRSA volume 10 (2005). This commentary is reprinted and accompanied with the first ever English translation. A treatise on the Seven Steps to Contemplation in Latin with an English translation is the third text. An introductory critical study evaluates all three works and argues that they all belong to the same author, pseudo-Thomas Gallus. ‎Inventio meditativa. The Rhetoric and Hermeneutics of Meditation in Hugh of Saint-Victor, Guigo II, and Bonaventure of Bagnoregio‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 269 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503612676.‎

‎Summary The present volume develops a new conceptual perspective on late-medieval meditation, particularly in Hugh of Saint-Victor, Guigo II, and Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. For the most part, modern commentaries on the subject have relegated rhetoric to the margins of attention, if not to complete silence. In contrast, this book contends that these writers arrived at their distinctive conceptions of meditation by drawing from the Ciceronian rhetorical tradition. They did so by deepening earlier rhetorical treatments of inventio while adapting them to the Christian life. The examination of this topic is divided into three principal and related aspects. First, meditation is studied as a rhetorical notion for a specific kind of mnemonic, rational, and affective exercise. Second, that notion is used to shed light on meditation as a compositional textual practice whose outcomes bear striking analogy to what Umberto Eco called the 'open works' of the Western avant-garde. Finally, meditation emerges as a form of literary reception required for approaching and construing certain works. In exploring each of these aspects, the study shows that rhetoric radically informs, not only Hugh's, Guigo's, and Bonaventure's engagement with meditation, but also their views on salvation history, monastic life, divine revelation, scientific learning, and biblical hermeneutics. Thus, despite the omission or relative insignificance of the ars bene dicendi in most modern investigations, it is argued that rhetoric lies at the core of these authors' entire religious outlook. In this way, the present volume aims to contribute to a better understanding of these medieval figures by filling an important gap in the scholarly literature. ‎Summary In an increasingly visual age, images are the new lingua franca and Christian theology must ask how it can be 'spoken' with nuance and integrity. This book brings together theologians, biblical scholars, art historians, and curators to consider what questions about Christ and modernity might be posed by the visual arts, and what truths about Christ and modernity they might ask us to face. Its authors explore modern and contemporary artists from Pablo Picasso to Kent Monkman and Paul C zanne to Cornelia Parker, addressing questions of theory, practice, and interpretation. Their contributions are orientated by an enquiring and critical focus on how modern and contemporary visual art coexists with, counters, illuminates, and serves Christianity. ‎Fallacies in the Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew and Latin Traditions‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 269 pages, Size:170 x 240 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503608198.‎

‎Summary Bad arguments have never been in short supply. The scholarly interest they have elicited in recent years, on the other hand, is quite exceptional. Fallacy studies have become a well established and flourishing field of argumentation theory. Without notable exception, the ever-growing literature on argumentative failures suffer from a conspicuous lack of interest in Mediaeval fallacy theory - arguably the most creative stage in the whole history of argumentation theories. The standard story is that after Aristotle got off to a tentative start, the study of fallacies laid dormant until people at Port Royal and John Locke revived it in spectacular fashion. Fallacies in the Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew and Latin Traditions will show that this narrative is misleading, if not altogether false. Free of boundaries or limitations imposed by differences in discipline, language and culture, the volume will provide ample and unambiguous record of the exegetical proficiency, technical expertise and argumentative savoir-faire typically displayed by mediaeval logicians jurists and theologians on issues whose complexity we underestimate to some extent - such as the problem of defining what a fallacy is or the pitfalls of linguistic expression. Working its way from the inside out within each mediaeval tradition and comparing mediaeval findings and lessons to contemporary views and trends, the volume will show where the potential for novelty and the rightful place of mediaeval theories of fallacies lies within contemporary argumentation studies. ‎Principia on the Sentences of Peter Lombard. Exploring an Uncharted Scholastic Philosophical Genre Across Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 1204 pages, Illustrations:1 b/w, 25 tables b/w., Language(s):English, French, Latin. ISBN 9782503612089.‎

‎Summary Principia were an obligatory step on the medieval university path to becoming a master of theology. As inaugural lectures on the four books of the Sentences of Peter Lombard, they provided the first opportunity for a scholastic to defend a philosophical-theological worldview. These lectures were also a way for the theologian, now a sententiarius, to present himself and to make a name for himself, initially by delivering in a speech an introduction to the course and by debating with his fellows. The present book takes a collective approach to offer a survey of the evolution of the genre, mapping the dissemination of this exercise during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries across Europe. As an academic exercise, principia bridge ideas, texts, authors, and institutions across time. Exploring the corpus of surviving principia illuminates the philosophical creativity cultivated in the faculties of theology. The papers in these volumes thus not only discuss the structural aspects of principia, but also treat the philosophical and theological ideas defended and attacked during the principial debates and the topics and imagery used in the speeches. The various chapters delve into the surviving material in a common attempt, firstly, to assemble pieces of evidence from Paris and Oxford into an image portraying how, when, and by whom the principia were performed in the first European universities. The second part illustrates the spread of the genre to the new faculties of theology in Central Europe and Italy, with case studies from Bologna, Cracow, Florence, Heidelberg, Prague, and Vienna, highlighting the pan-European diffusion of the practice. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 219 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:3 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503596808.‎

‎Summary The Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 was a foundational event in the history of Western Christendom. Lead by the reformist Pope Innocent III, the Council ushered in a new era of papal policy in governance, the implications of which would be felt throughout the continent. To some, Lateran IV represents the flourishing of the medieval papacy, as the institution sought to improve pastoral care across Europe, as well as to define theological orthodoxy. For others, Lateran IV constitutes the founding moment of the so-called 'persecuting society', the moment at which the Papacy articulated its identity via the category of heresy. Lateran IV: Theology and Care of Souls assesses the pastoral and theological legacies of the Council. The volume brings together scholars of high theology, as well as those whose work engages with the practices of clerical governance in the thirteenth century. Lateran IV: Theology and Care of Souls maps the key intellectual, theological, and pastoral concerns of Lateran IV, especially revealing the influence of the medieval theologians connected to the universities on the decrees of the Council. ‎Summary The relationship of Orthodox Christianity to the modern sciences has received scant attention in the last fifty years. While important contributions have been made in history, theology and philosophy, there have been very few attempts to highlight the importance and fruitfulness of the field for an international audience. This volume brings together contributions from scholars of different disciplines to discuss the past, present and future of the relations between Orthodox Christianity and the sciences. The topics covered range from theological discussions of miracles to the importance of seminary work on science and religion and from a practitioner's view of addressing medical suffering to a historical discussion of the Scientific Revolution in Orthodox spaces. The volume is addressed to historians, philosophers, theologians, scientists and members of the clergy, but also to any scholar that is interested in discovering the vibrancy of the emerging field of Science and Orthodox Christianity Studies. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 412 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503600437.‎

‎Summary Thomas Gallus (d. 1246) was the Abbot of Vercelli in the north of Italy. Initially a canon regular in the abbey of St Victor in Paris, he helped found a new monastery and church in the home town of his patron, Cardinal Guala Bicchieri. As well as commenting on the Canticle of Canticles three times, Thomas was renowned for his expositions of the works of Dionysius the Areopagite, commentaries which earned him the title magister in hierarchia (master of the hierarchies). This volume contains the first translation in any language of his Glosses on the Angelic (or Celestial) Hierarchy (completed in 1224), as well as his more detailed Explanation of the Angelic Hierarchy (finished in 1243). The commentaries are fascinating for their insights into Thomas's teaching that love has a higher access to an experience of God than the intellect, the role of the angelic hierarchies in the mystical return of the soul, the psychological interpretation of the angels as representing faculties of the soul, and the use of symbols representing analogical features of the divine. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Thomas Gallus, Super angelica ierarchia (CCCM, 223) and Glose super angelica ierarchia (CC CM, 223A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. ‎Rise of an Academic Elite : Deans, Masters, and Scribes at the University of Vienna before 1400‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, xi + 697 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:15 col., Language(s):English, French, Latin. ISBN 9782503601021.‎

‎Summary Henry of Rheinfelden, a Dominican from Basel, spent the last decade of the fourteenth century at the University of Vienna studying theology. During this time he took notes on the academic activities of the first rectors of the university and deans of the Faculties of Arts and Theology. This volume explores Rheinfelden's contribution to our understanding of the doctrinal, curricular, administrative, and prosopographical history of the early University of Vienna. Deciphering Rheinfelden's surviving notebooks in the Universit tsbibliothek Basel sheds new light on the rise of an academic elite in Vienna. His manuscripts reveal a network of scholars sharing a passion for knowledge and supply a gallery of intellectual profiles, starting with the mentors of the group, Henry of Langenstein and Henry Totting of Oyta, and continuing with the lesser-known figures Stephen of Enzersdorf, Gerhard Vischpekch of Osnabr ck, Paul (Fabri) of Geldern, Andreas of Langenstein, Rutger Dole of Roermond, Nicholas of H nhartzkirchen, Nicholas of Dinkelsb hl, John Berwart of Villingen, John Stadel of Russbach, Peter de Treysa, Michael Suchenschatz of Hausleiten, Peter Schad of Walse, Thomas of Cleves, and Leonhard of Dorffen. The papers gathered in this volume highlight the intricate relationship between a commitment to administrative duty and an appetite for the creation of a doctrinal tradition via debating, forging arguments, defending and attacking positions, commenting on authorities, and adopting and adapting academic practices imported from Paris, since the majority of the authors in our gallery were educated in Paris and built their careers in Vienna. Through Rheinfelden's notebooks, this volume provides access to unique and previously unknown texts that together offer a new image of the medieval University of Vienna. ‎Homo Interior and Vita Socialis. Patristic Patterns and Twelfth-Century Reflections‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 209 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503601182.‎

‎Summary Just as apparently universal ideas of inwardness are different over time, so the idea of the self in relation to others is subject to historical change and dependent on different contexts. Against a shared background of late antique and early medieval Christianity the thinkers who are the subject of this book develop their thoughts of a relational self within their wider concerns. Augustine is the thinker of interiority, but also of the social life. For Augustine, the opacity of others, even of oneself, and how to overcome it, is a main concern. Cassian writes about the ideal of solitude, yet neither the abbas who are the subject of his Conversations, nor his readers can avoid the company of others. For Cassian, human fellowship is instrumental in reaching the desired virtues of detachment, which then enables love for others. Gregory the Great searches for the right balance of the contemplative and the active life, but even the contemplative is not a separate individual. Gregory's instruction of the leaders of the Church emphasises the need to widen in compassion, against the constant danger for the preachers of hypocrisy and the swollenness of pride and arrogance. These three authors were among the most influential sources in later ages. Their echoes resonated in the twelfth century, when a renewed interest in interiority raises the question how the twelfth-century 'inner man' relates to others. Hugh of Saint-Victor, Abelard, and Heloise, are among the writers in whose thoughts we see patristic thought reflected and changed in various ways. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Chapter One. ‎Protevangelium of James. Critical edition, with translation and commentary‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 126 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Greek. ISBN 9782503593142.‎

‎Summary As a prehistory to the Nativity accounts of the gospels of Matthew and Luke the Protevangelium of James, dated to the second half of the second century, aimed to fill in alleged gaps in the canonical accounts of Jesus' and his mother's ancestry and births. Thus, it describes the birth of Mary, the mother of Christ, the Annunciation, the Nativity and the death of Zachariah, the high priest and father of John the Baptist. The edition of the original Greek text has an English version on its facing pages. There are also editorial notes to enable all interested parties to benefit from reading this important and influential text. The commentary pays particular attention to the early liturgical use of the Protevangelium and to artistic representations of the scenes it describes as these were the main means by which this highly influential text was transmitted throughout the known world. It also questions the usually accepted genre and purpose of the text and suggests that its author may have had a satirical intention or have intended it as an early Christian novelette, using scriptural scenes and themes as his inspiration. Maybe we have approached the Protevangelium of James with solemn faces and have been prepared to carry out serious theological investigations, whereas the many inconsistencies and glaring contradictions so obvious as to be ridiculous might suggest the author's intentions were not quite so grave or weighty.‎

‎Spiritual Formation and Mystical Symbolism. A Selection of Works of Hugh and Richard of St Victor, and of Thomas Gallus‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 625 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503553115.‎

‎Summary Biblical interpretation, writings on the contemplative/mystical life and a continuing deep reflection on the nature and meaning of symbols come together in powerful ways in Victorine writers, particularly Hugh and Richard, as well as the lesser-known writer Thomas Gallus (Thomas of Vercelli), a Victorine canon who became the abbot of a house of regular canons in Vercelli, Italy. This volume contains: (1) Hugh's On the Ark of Noah and A Short Treatise on the Form of the Ark, treatises that unfold Hugh's teaching on stages and fruition of the mystical quest in relation to a complex drawing that incorporates a figure of Christ seated in majesty, embracing a map of the world on which is superimposed a diagram of Noah's Ark, representing the 12 stages of the contemplative quest; (2) Richard's On the Ark of Moses, a work that uses the symbolic (allegorical and tropological) interpretation of the Ark of the Covenant and the figures of the Cherubim that accompany the Ark in the Jerusalem Temple to convey Richard's vivid and compelling teaching on the varieties of contemplative experience as he understood them in twelfth-century Paris; and (3) Thomas Gallus' Commentary on the Song of Songs, which offers a window into a formative period of transition in the western Christian spiritual tradition, with Gallus's commentary on the Song of Songs giving voice to a more ?affective? (versus ?speculative?) understanding of the mystical quest and experience, drawing upon and extending earlier Victorine explorations of the interrelationship of love and knowing in the experience of contemplation. For those interested in the dynamics of the spiritual quest and symbolic understanding in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, as well as insights that can inform the modern quest for knowledge and love of God, these are essential works for any library.‎

‎Popularization of Philosophy in Medieval Islam, Judaism, and Christianity‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 465 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Arabic, Hebrew. ISBN 9782503577838.‎

‎Summary This volume explores attempts at the popularization of philosophy and natural science in medieval Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Medieval philosophers usually wrote their philosophical books for philosophers, so the desire to convey psychological, cosmological, metaphysical, or even physical teachings to the 'vulgus' may seem surprising. This disdain for the multitude and their weak intellectual capabilities is expressed most clearly in the medieval Islamic and Jewish Aristotelian traditions of philosophy, but is certainly found among the Scholastics as well. Yet philosophy was taught to non-philosophers and via a variety of literary genres. Indeed, scholars have argued that philosophy most influenced medieval society through popular forms of transmission. Among the questions this volume addresses are the following: Which philosophers or theologians sought to direct their philosophical writings to the many? For what purposes did they seek to popularize philosophy? Was the goal to teach philosophical truths? Were certain teachings not transmitted? Which teachings were transmitted most often? For whom exactly were these popularized texts written? Were the authors of popularized philosophy always aware they were writing for non-philosophers? How did they go about teaching philosophy to a wide audience? How successful were these attempts? In what ways did popularized philosophy impact upon society? To what extent were the considerations and problems in the medieval popularization of philosophy the same or different in the various religious traditions of philosophy? How philosophical was the popularized philosophy? In addressing these questions, this pioneering volume is the first of its kind to bring together scholars of medieval Islamic, Jewish, and Christian thought to discuss the popularization of philosophy in these three religious traditions of philosophy. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 186 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503592671.‎

‎Summary Orthodox Christian theology is based on a living tradition that is deeply rooted in Greek Patristic thought. However, few systematic proposals about how this theology can respond to questions that arise from modern science have yet appeared. This volume, consisting of eleven essays by different authors about how this response should be formulated, therefore represents a significant contribution to Orthodox thinking as well as to the broader science-theology dialogue among Christians. The variety of approaches in the essays indicates that there does not yet exist among Orthodox a consensus about the methodology that is appropriate to this dialogue or about how the questions that arise from specific scientific insights should be answered. Nevertheless, they indicate the ways in which Orthodox approaches to science differ significantly from most of those to be found among Western Christian scholars, and in this way they point to an underlying unity of perspective that is rooted in the Orthodox tradition. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 642 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language: Latin. ISBN 9782503591353.‎

‎Summary CC CM, 172A contains the editio princeps of two Latin translations made by the late medieval Dutch Church reformer Geert Grote (Gerardus Magnus, 1340-1384) and a revised edition of another translation, made by Anthonius Henrici de Viersen (fl. 1460-1490), Brother of the Common Life in Butzbach and collaborator of the proto-humanist Gabriel Biel. The source texts had originally been composed in Middle Dutch, by the great Brabantine mystic Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381) and by Godfried Wevel, one of his fellow canons regular at Groenendaal near Brussels from 1360 until his death in 1396. Another editio princeps completes the volume: a Middle Dutch adaptation of Meister Eckhart's Reden der Unterweisung, the main source for Wevel's Vanden twaelf dogheden. This adaptation was probably compiled in Grote's entourage, if not by him personally, and is here edited as Eyn boeck van der gelatenheit. The publication of Grote's adaptation of Eckhart and the accompanying convincingly underpinned analysis may mean a landslide for the proper assessment of Eckhart's reception in the Low Countries and adjacent territories in modern western Germany during the later Middle Ages. Each of the edited texts is accompanied by an apparatus comparatiuus, indicating in detail all discrepancies between the translations and the source texts. Lengthy introductions complete the volume.‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, viii + 366 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888443106.‎

‎Summary Regino of Pr m (ca. 840-915), after being deposed as abbot of Pr m, became a notable musical theorist, historical chronicler, and student of the canons. His Two Books on Synodal Causes and Ecclesiastical Disciplines have generally been seen as practical handbooks to be used in the decision of synodal cases. Although they may have been used in the course of episcopal visitations, they are not to be read as limited to such use. They are to be regarded primarily as a pedagogical tool, intended to remedy an ignorance of the canonical tradition by the clerics in his part of the world. They are intended to be of use to all who have some position of responsibility within the Church and, ultimately, to every member of the Church. They are meant to help form every Christian, but particularly those clerics who have the responsibility to issue judgments and hear confessions in the Church, and to develop in them a disciplined discernment and a habit of addressing issues as they arise in personal and community life in the light of Scripture and of the long experience of the Church. They are brilliantly arranged around the device of questionnaires which fosters a case-based and tentative approach to the resolution of problems while avoiding abstraction and striving to mitigate legalism. The work was influential in its own region, but obtained much greater resonance through its eventual absorption into the Decretum of Burchard of Worms, thus affecting the whole Western canonical tradition.‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 547 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Language(s):English, French, German. ISBN 9782503596501.‎

‎Summary Founded at the beginning of the twelfth century on the outskirts of Paris, the Parisian school of Saint-Victor soon became an intellectual centre on a European scale: through the international recruitment of its masters; through the wide handwritten dissemination of their works, in particular those of Hugh and Richard; and finally through the extent of its doctrinal contribution to a common European culture, on a large number of points: the importance of acquiring a "general culture"; the need for a rigorous historical approach to biblical texts, open to rabbinic exegesis; a contagious interest in the writings and thought of the pseudo-Dionysius Areopagita; a major contribution to the constitution of a theological discipline; an effort to reconcile fervour in spiritual life and psychological finesse in the analysis of contemplation and its stages. In short, a curiosity for all fields of knowledge and, at the same time, an effort to unify them into a universal and unified wisdom. The Book gathers new studies on original sources concerning Hugh of St. Victor, as the intellectual founder or the Victorine school; several of his Victorine brothers and disciples: Richard, Achard, Andrew, Godfrey, Absalon, up to late and little known Victorine masters as Pierre Leduc and Henri le Boulangier, at the time of the Great Schism (with critical edition of inedited texts); their influences on twelfth century texts as Ysagoge in theologiam or Speculum Ecclesiae, on Franciscan authors including Antony of Padua, Bonaventure, Rudolf of Biberach, and Duns Scotus, on romance literature of troubadours, on Carmelite authors of the sixteenth centruy and -?a?still uncharted territory?- on?Polish culture from Middle Ages to contemporary times. ‎Summary The Liber floridus is an encyclopedic compilation written in the first quarter of the twelfth century by a canon of Saint-Omer named Lambert. The work was conceived as an illustrated edition combining texts with images, with Lambert collecting earlier sources as well as contemporary literature in his attempt at synthesis and innovation. Time plays an important role, manifested in the liturgical calendar, the idea of the end of time, the movements of planets, the divisions of time in ages and years, local and universal history. Approached from a range of perspectives and from different disciplines, this volume investigates the reception of scientific ideas and the many concepts of time in the Liber floridus, conveyed in its images, texts, and diagrams, while also taking into account the various exegetical and philosophical contexts. The manuscript tradition of the Liber floridus is likewise considered, with particular attention given to the autograph manuscript, now held at the Ghent University Library, and to the oldest and most accurate copy of Lambert's autograph, now at the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenb ttel. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 512 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language: Latin. ISBN 9782503592473.‎

‎Abel Distinctions‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 726 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503593937.‎

‎Summary Peter the Chanter was a master at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris in the late 12th century. Among his many works is The Abel Distinctions, an alphabetized collection that treats key words by 'distinguishing' their various symbolic meanings in accordance with the traditions of biblical exegesis. The work was innovative in form and deeply conservative in content. Of special use to preachers who would shape a sermon around such sets of distinctions, it also appealed in general to clerics and laity interested in biblical meaning and allegory. The Abel Distinctions may have been the first collection of its kind; it spawned dozens of imitators through the next two centuries and more. Its immense popularity and influence is indicated by its nearly ninety extant manuscripts. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Petrus Cantor, Distinctiones Abel (CC CM, 288-288A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.‎

‎Summary Richard of Saint-Victor's On The Trinity from the 12th century is a main source for our understanding of a leading intellectual tradition of the Western world in which love was regarded the highest and the best in the human world and therefore also was the reality in which the highest and the best, God, was to be seen. Richard understands human love as interpersonal so that love must be realized between two persons, but for being the highest love that excludes any private and selfish love, both loving persons must share their love with a third person. ‎Victorine Restoration. Essays on Hugh of St Victor, Richard of St Victor, and Thomas Gallus‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 376 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:15 b/w, 2 col., 4 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503585130.‎

‎Summary The Victorines were scholars and teachers of philosophy, liberal arts, sacred scripture, music, and contemplation at the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Paris. This collection focuses on the three greatest Victorines: Hugh (d. 1141), who established the direction of the school; Richard (d. 1173), who developed Victorine contemplation; and Thomas Gallus (d. 1246), who culminated Victorine contemplative thought and transmitted it to other schools, especially the Franciscans. They offer an innovative revival of the Christian spiritual and intellectual tradition for their reforming pastoral mission in their urban setting and for the Church. Their contemporaries saw the Victorines as beacons of spiritual love and intellectual richness. Later reformers and thinkers held their writings as touchstones of contemplative love, including, for example, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, Jean Gerson, Thomas Kempis, the Devotio Moderna, and many others. The writings of the Victorines found broad appeal among later medieval readers, as well as praise among early modern reformers, Protestant and Catholic alike. In recent decades, the Victorines have returned to scholarly attention and renewed appreciation. Scholarly studies, critical editions, and translation projects reveal the treasures of Victorine thought and spirituality. This volume showcases the findings of recent research and scholarly advances in Victorine studies, offering new readers a status quaestionis of the field. It also features new research by eminent experts in Victorine thought that points out promising directions for future research, thus offering important new findings for established specialists.

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 442 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: French. ISBN 9782503593746.‎

‎Summary Achard de Saint-Victor (1171) est un repr sentant moins connu de l' cole de Saint-Victor, l ve d'Hugues, chanoine r gulier, ma tre, abb de Saint-Victor Paris (1155-1161), v que d'Avranches (1161-1171).

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 2 vols, xxvi + 1306 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: French. ISBN 9782503590868.‎

TABLE OF CONTENTS This book is the first exhaustive study of one of the fundamental theory for medieval science: the theory of celestial influence. The analysis of the Sentences commentaries reveals different conceptions of celestial causality and shows the interactions between secular and Christian cosmologies. ‎Homiliary of Paul the Deacon. Religious and Cultural Reform in Carolingian Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 339 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 3 col., 13 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503577913.‎

‎Summary As one of the most widely used products of Charlemagne's religious and cultural reforms, the homiliary of Paul the Deacon is a unique monument in the history of Western Europe. Completed around AD 797, this collection of patristic homilies and sermons shaped the religious faith and liturgical practices of the churches in Carolingian Europe and those of countless other churches over the course of a millennium of use. Until now, scholarly study of the homiliary has rested on seven partial witnesses to the collection. This study, however, draws on over 80 newly identified witnesses from the Carolingian period, while providing a brief guide and handlist to hundreds of later manuscripts. It replaces the current scholarly reconstruction of the homiliary, discusses the significance of the collection's liturgical structure and provisions, and considers the composition of the homiliary in the context of Charlemagne's reforms and Paul's patron-client relationships. The study also brings together evidence for the production and use of this text in thirty-three Carolingian monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. The book then addresses the homiliary's theological character: the contents of the homiliary reflected a concern for expressing and defending orthodox doctrine at Charlemagne's court against Trinitarian and Christological heresies, as well as an urgent attention to moral reform in the light of a belief in the imminence of divine judgement. Finally, the study demonstrates the varied uses of Paul's collection and its historical legacy. ‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, cxl + 853 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language: Latin. ISBN 9782503593081.‎

Jahrhunderts, kritisch herausgegeben.‎
