‎"The English mathematician and philosopher A. N. Whitehead described the Western tradition as follows: ?The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.' By way of analogy, one could state without difficulty: The history of theology in the West consists of a series of footnotes to Augustine." This is how Wilhelm Geerlings describes the significance of Augustine in his pithy and short book on the theologian. Just as Whitehead?s statement was not meant to diminish the achievement of later philosophers, but rather aimed at underlining the fundamental significance of Plato, Geerlings did not intend to minimize the significance of post-Augustinian theology. Likewise, the title given to the collection of the most important articles of Wilhelm Geerlings (1941-2008), Footnotes to Augustine, is not meant to lessen the author?s contribution. It rather highlights the crucial significance of Augustine for the thought and scholarship of the theologian and historian Wilhelm Geerlings. To the general public, he is mainly known as the founder and editor of the Fontes Christiani, a series of new bilingual editions of ancient and medieval Christian sources, which, by the time of his death, comprised one hundred volumes. The congress papers assembled in the present volume offer an informative survey of the Liber contemplationis in Deum (Catalan: Llibre de contemplacio en Deu), the most comprehensive and probably most significant work of Llull's. The Liber contemplationis comprises 366 chapters: one chapter for each day of the year, including one for the additional day of the leap year. The contents of the work have often been described as 'encyclopaedic'. Its aim, however, is not to offer a comprehensive account of all that is known about reality, but rather to recognise and describe reality in the context of contemplating God, knowing the articles of faith as well as attaining a virtuous life agreeable to God. ‎The letters of Anselm of Canterbury (? 1109) provide the clearest insight into his mind and action, and they also constitute one of our finest vantage points to observe the formation of those profound forces moulding Europe in the late eleventh- and early twelfth centuries. The focus of the present study is the transmission of Anselm's correspondence. It argues that many of the conclusions of earlier scholarship have been constructed on flawed foundations. Using evidence from all known manuscripts and printed editions, the study seeks to demonstrate precisely how Anselm's letters have survived and how the surviving witnesses relate to one another. The study also aims to define the historical contexts within which our key manuscripts were copied and edited. Only when equipped with this store of information can we begin to understand the editorial processes that shaped the textual tradition of Anselm's letter collections before and after his death. ‎The catalogue identifies works used to explain the creed in Carolingian collection volumes compiled for the instruction of the clergy. It includes both edited and unedited works and some recently edited in a companion volume to this one, Explanationes Symboli aeui Carolini (CC CM, 254). The catalogue shows that the teaching of the creedal faith was assembled from snippets of, or whole, patristic works, homilies, personal professions of faith, and works of many other genres. In the past, we have had little concept of the range of works known to those responsible for teaching the faith at the parish and missionary level of the Carolingian world. In this catalogue crucial attention is paid to the contents of the manuscripts as a whole in which the creed explanation is found and how these collection volumes may have functioned. ‎Originally written in Catalan in 1301, Raimundus Lullus's Retorica nova has been preserved only in a Latin translation dating to 1303. The text was part of a mature and ambitious intellectual project by Lullus aimed at rethinking the curriculum subjects (the arts of the trivium and the quadrivium) from the concepts and combinatory provided by his Art. In Lullus's Retorica nova rhetorical and linguistic ideas inherited from previous traditions can be distinguished: the word is the vox significativa conveying a concept, as pointed out by Aristotle; for its part, rhetoric is the art of rendering such word pleasant and beautiful so that speakers and listeners should converge at one same aim, as stated by rhetorical manuals in Lullus's own time. Lullus goes, however, beyond this tradition. His rhetoric is new inasmuch as, in Lullus's own text, expression, beauty and persuasion follow the principles of his Art, and are subjected to the truth which the Art is capable of revealing in every designated being. The resulting doctrine is both theoretical and applied: not only does it investigate beauty, order and suitability in the word (verbum) and in the speech (sermo) but it also draws precepts which are valid for all sorts of communication, from civic oratory to praying. Practical by nature, these precepts do not neglect the instrumental function of the word, subordinated to the human duty to serve God in accordance with the intentio prima which guides Lullus's thought. Dans le systeme de l'Art lullien, expose dans l'Ars generalis ultima, les arts du langage font partie du sujet qui concerne la puissance instrumentativa ou ? artificielle? de l'etre humain. Llull reconnait que le discours (sermo) rhetoriquement bien construit et la parole (verbum) rhetoriquement bien ordonnee ont pour but de devenir l'instrument qui aide l'homme a mener a bien ce a quoi il est oblige par sa nature : servir son Seigneur Dieu (servire Deo). Ainsi, la rhetorique est-elle utile a '?homme puisqu'elle lui permet de conduire le langage a la poursuite d'une bonne fin. Ainsi, la persuasion a une dimension ontologique parce qu'elle amene les paroles, et l'usage qu'on peut en faire, a saisir la verite meme des choses. En ce sens, la parole ordonnee selon la rhetorique revele et releve ce qu'il y a de plus noble et de plus parfait dans tous les etres, ce en quoi nous pouvons decouvrir une empreinte des Dignites divines. La division du livre en quatre parties (Ordre, Beaute, Science et Charite) repond a cette orientation ontologique qui finalement devient une ethique chretienne. L'Ordre, ou disposition dont les paroles ont besoin pour etre intelligibles, est le fondement de la beaute. La Beaute, autant qu'elle peut attribuer aux paroles la grace exigee par leur signification (decore congruo venustare), constitue le noyau de la rhetorique. La Science, comprise comme la competence de gerer la parole suivant les principes de l'Art, nous enseigne la maniere d'obtenir la beaute recherchee. Finalement la Charite, qui est la condition prealable pour que la beaute soit authentique, apparait comme le bien ultime auquel les belles paroles doivent parvenir. En suivant saint Augustin, la rhetorique lullienne vise a l'accomplissement de l'intentio prima de la vie humaine : arriver a l'amour et s'y reposer. En repondant au commandement de la charite, Llull a ecrit une rhetorique qui est ? nouvelle? parce qu'elle, d'une facon toute neuve en son temps, ordonne les paroles suivant la rigueur philosophique de l'Art, en attendant qu'un jour l'amour les rende superflues. The current edition offers a revised Latin text of the work, previously edited in ROL XXIII (CC CM 115), together with a carefully annotated translation into Catalan. La Disputatio intellectus et fidei (Montpellier 1303) peut etre consideree comme l'expose le plus lucide que Ramon Llull ait jamais fait de la relation entre la foi et la raison. Composee comme un dialogue amusant, l'oeuvre presente deux personnages allegoriques, l'? Intellectus? et sa soeur ? Fides? , qui se demandent si on peut demontrer les articles de la foi chretienne au moyen d'irrefutables arguments rationnels (? rationes necessariae? ). Dans leur longue introduction, les editeurs analysent la conception dynamique que Llull a de la relation entre la foi et la raison, en meme temps qu'ils la comparent a des conceptions contemporaines. ‎Traditionally attributed to Hegemonius, the Acta Archelai is the oldest and most significant anti-Manichaean polemical text. Originally composed in Greek in the fourth century, it has survived mainly in a near contemporary Latin translation - substantial section of the Greek version has however survived in the Panarion of Epiphanius. The Acta gives a fictional account of a debate between Mani and Archelaus, the Christian bishop of the city of Carchar in Roman Mesopotamia as well as an important summary of his teaching on cosmogony and a highly polemical version of Mani's life. The work would later exercise enormous influence on anti-Manichaean writings in both Late Antiquity and Middle Ages. The present translation, the first to be based on the excellent edition by Charles Beeson, is accompanied by detailed introduction and notes. The Greek version of the summary of Mani's teaching preserved in Greek is also translated separately in an appendix. ‎Tres tot les Eglises chretiennes ont pense et ecrit leur histoire, une histoire organisee autour de la succession des eveques, depuis les apotres. Les catalogues antiques d'eveques de Rome ont permis d'etablir au VIe siecle le premier Liber pontificalis, Livre des papes, continue jusqu'au IXe, puis au XIVe siecle, relaye ensuite par une histoire humaniste des pontifes, puis une histoire critique, universitaire et enfin mediatique en notre debut de XXIe siecle. C'est a une reprise des travaux sur le Liber pontificalis et a une reflexion sur les histoires pontificales plus recentes qu'est consacree la premiere partie de cet ouvrage. Le meme souci de la liste ininterrompue des eveques depuis les apotres ? jusqu'a nos jours ? , d'une histoire qui se construit autour de la liste episcopale, s'est exprime dans les gesta episcoporum. Ces Gestes d'eveques rediges dans de nombreuses cites episcopales demontrent comment la lignee des eveques a progressivement mis en place les droits de l'Eglise de la cite, ses biens, ses monuments, sa liturgie, tout ce qui constitue l'Eglise au moment de l'ecriture de l'histoire. Ces gestes d'eveques, dont les prototypes sont carolingiens, ont ete eux aussi continues. Leur fonction a evolue, mais la conception de l'histoire reste la meme : la continuite et la saintete globale de la liste des pontifes est garante de la legitimite et de l'orthodoxie de l'Eglise du temps present. La seconde partie du livre nous entraine de Dalmatie, d'Italie et d'Espagne, en Baviere, en Rhenanie et en France pour voir comment et pourquoi on a ecrit l'histoire des eveques au Moyen Age, puis comment et pourquoi, aux epoques moderne et contemporaine l'histoire erudite et critique a repris les ecrits de ce type et les informations qu'ils portaient. ‎Les relations entre autorite, fonctions, qualites et charismes personnels sont complexes pour les sciences religieuses. Cet ouvrage a pour objectif de reunir un certain nombre de contributions sur l'autorite religieuse en islam, dans plusieurs aires culturelles orientales et a differentes epoques jusqu'a aujourd'hui, mais dans une perspective comparatiste avec d'autres religions ou systemes de pensee. Dans toute religion, ou systeme de pensee, les detenteurs de l'autorite religieuse semblent occuper une place centrale dans la societe. On a analyse le fondement de cette autorite en articulant la problematique, dans la mesure du possible, autour de deux poles qui semblent souvent en tension : le charisme et la hierarchie, religieuse ou politique. Le pretendant au rang de chef charismatique doit se conformer a des modeles convenus. C'est la vox populi qui sanctionne sa reconnaissance en tant que tel. Le charisme postule, d'autre part, une personnalite hors du commun ainsi que des qualites spirituelles et electives. Le meme type de tension parcourt, de facon inverse, un corps clerical organise de facon hierarchique. L'ordre dans lequel son chef est susceptible de s'inserer doit obeir a ses propres regles institutionnelles, voire bureaucratiques de cooptation et, aussi, tenir compte de la ferveur populaire susceptible de contrarier cette logique institutionnelle interne. A travers des etudes de cas, les auteurs des contributions ici reunies examinent comment jouent ou non ces tensions qui peuvent tout aussi bien generer des crises que converger et concourir a la reproduction ou non d'un corps clerical dans des contextes de profonds changements sociaux. ‎This book argues that the relations between the Mamluk Sultanate of Syria and Egypt and the Ilkhanate, the Mongol state in Iran and the surrounding countries, were of a military, political-diplomatic, social and cultural nature. The relations between the Mamluk Sultanate of Syria and Egypt and the Ilkhanate, the Mongol state in Iran and the surrounding countries, were of a military, political-diplomatic, social and cultural nature. They had a profound impact not only on these states themselves, their ruling elites and the general population, but also on neighboring countries and beyond. The history of the eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia, Arabia and the Caucasus can hardly be understood without taking into consideration these complicated relations, whose impact was also felt in the other Mongol states to the east, and in the more westerly and northern parts of Europe. One can perhaps even speak of a thirteenth century ?world war?: on one side were arrayed the Mamluks and the Mongol Golden Horde of southern Russia, at times Genoa and the Byzantine empire, and even for a short while the kingdom of Sicily under the Hohenstaufen, while on the other side we find the Ilkhanate, the Venetians (albeit still trading with the Mamluks), the states of western Europe, the Papacy, the Armenians of both the Caucasus and Cilicia, and Georgia. To this we could add minor, but still important players, such as the Bedouin of Syria, the Seljuqs of Rum (Anatolia), the Turcoman of that country, and other local elements. Far away, the Mongols of Central Asia and the Great Khan in China also had an impact on affairs along the Mediterranean coast and southwest Asia. But this was not only a matter of war, which between the Mamluks and Ilkhanid Mongols continued from 1260-1320. There were intricate diplomatic relations; polemics and ideological sparring; defections, immigrations and transfers of populations; cultural influences; and, the impact on social life, economics and demography. The present volume is based on four lectures given at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris in February 2007, and first provides an overview of the military struggle between these two regional powers, continues with a detailed discussion of the ideological posturing and sparring between them ? both before and after the conversion of the Mongols to Islam in the 1290s, and finally reviews and compares how the Mamluks and Mongols presented themselves to the local, mainly Muslim, populations that they ruled. ‎Le Repertoire des Visites pastorales de la France. Premiere serie: anciens dioceses (jusqu'en 1790) a ete publie en quatre volumes, echelonnes de 1977 a 1985. C'etait le fruit d'une enquete commencee en 1968, a l'initiative du doyen Gabriel Le Bras, et qui, pendant quinze ans a beneficie du travail d'une centaine de chercheurs, dans le cadre administratif et financier du CNRS. Mais la publication de ces resultats n'a jamais ete consideree comme definitive. En 1999, soit quinze ans apres l'achevement officiel de l'enquete, Marc Venard a decide d'entreprendre une mise a jour systematique du Repertoire. Avec la cooperation des directeurs d'Archives departementales, de chercheurs et de nombreux benevoles, une information souvent substantielle a pu etre recueillie. La mise a jour concerne 105 dioceses, soit plus de deux tiers des 150 catalogues dans le precedent Repertoire. Mais il est evident que, selon les cas, l'apport est d'importance fort inegale: pour certains dioceses, tel celui d'Urgell, il s'agit d'une veritable revelation, pour d'autres, de simples corrections formelles ou d'indications bibliographiques. Il est donc evident que cette mise a jour s'imposait. Puisqu'il ne pouvait etre question de realiser une nouvelle edition du Repertoire des Visites pastorales comme cela fut fait pour les Statuts synodaux, nous nous contentons de proposer un modeste volume supplementaire, publie autant que possible selon les memes regles de presentation.
