‎A comprehensive analysis of the system and poetics of literary patronage in the Renaissance on the basis of Giannantonio Campano?s poetic oeuvre. This study examines the system and poetics of literary patronage in the Renaissance by presenting a comprehensive analysis of the poetry of Giannantonio Campano. In this way, it addresses two themes largely overlooked by modern scholarship. Most studies of literary patronage focus on antiquity, the Middle Ages, or on England during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. If Renaissance patronage is considered at all, the focus is almost exclusively on social and political networks or on the visual arts. In spite of this, literary patronage in fact forms a crucial context for our understanding of the work and careers of Renaissance writers like Campano. By analysing Campano?s poetry in relation to his various patronage relationships, this study also offers the first comprehensive introduction to his poetic oeuvre. His poems not only shed light on his own patronage relationships with important Renaissance princes such as Pope Pius II and Federico da Montefeltro, but also revive and appropriate the ancient literary patronage discourse found in the poetry of Horace, Ovid, Martial, and other classical writers. ‎In de periode 1360-85 ontstond de eerste vrijwel complete Nederlandse prozavertaling van de bijbel. Tot aan de Reformatie bleef zij de belangrijkste toegang tot de bijbel in de volkstaal. De vertaling werd vervaardigd door Petrus Naghel (overl. 1 mei 1395), een kartuizer uit het klooster te Herne, die ook tal van andere werken uit de christelijke traditie in het Middelnederlands overzette. Zijn opdrachtgever was Jan Taye, een getrouwde man met kinderen, die enige malen schepen in het stadsbestuur van Brussel was. Zijn bemoeienis, als leek van eenvoudige adel, met het ontstaan van een bijbelvertaling is zelfs in Europees perspectief hoogst opmerkelijk. Centraal in deze studie staat de Historiebijbel van 1361, die Naghel op 23 juni 1361 voltooide. Een historiebijbel bevat uitsluitend de historische boeken van de bijbel, veelal rijkelijk voorzien van commentaren en tal van andere teksten, soms van geheel profane aard. In acht hoofdstukken worden diverse aspecten van de Historiebijbel behandeld, zoals: de persoon van de vertaler en diens opdrachtgever, alsmede de historische bronnen die ons hierbij ten dienste staan; de oorspronkelijke opzet van de tekst; de waarde van de oudste handschriften voor onze kennis van receptie en productie van de tekst; de bewerkingstechniek die Petrus Naghel toepaste; de maatschappelijke en sociale factoren die een rol speelden bij de productie van historiebijbel-handschriften; de (vermeende) relatie met de Franse bijbelvertaling; de factoren die uiteindelijk hebben verhinderd dat Naghels bijbelvertaling door leken werd gelezen, waarbij met name dieper wordt ingegaan op de rol van de Moderne devotie. In het laatste en negende hoofdstuk wordt de meest recente stand van het onderzoek ten aanzien van Naghels vertalingen kritisch besproken. Het boek wordt ingeleid door Geert Claassens, die als leerstoelhouder voor Middelnederlandse letterkunde aan de KU Leuven een onderzoeksproject over Petrus Naghel leidt.‎

‎The Royal Library of Belgium intends to make its rich collections accessible to researchers and to the interested public. The Library owns a series of seventeeth-century emblem manuscripts with more than two thousand drawings and poems. In these commemorative manuscripts the College preserved its annual emblematic exhibitions for future generations. These affixiones-the phenomenon is perhaps best represented by the word 'affichages'-were one of the numerous manifestations with which the Jesuits used to commend the quality of their education system to the outside world. What is meant is the exhibiting or suspending of the work of pupils, mostly emblems or related genres. The Brussels collection (some forty volumes) is unique and special. It covers the production of a single college during a long span of time (1630-1685). For researchers of emblems, as well as for art historians it opens averitable goldmine. The high artistic as well as literary quality which the volumes so often achieve lends the collection moreover a rare distinction: wonderful gouaches (by Antoon Sallaert), no less splendid calligraphy (e.g. byG.H. Wilmart) and sophisticated, erudite Latin and Greek verses. Attention is focused on the context in which the Brussles affixiones came about and functioned: the tuition (training of the pupils' memory abd their rhetorical abilities, pastoral and social education), The Brussels festivals of the Sacrament of the Miracle, the proximity of the Court, the vicissitudes of the city, the artists. The manuscripts almost always mention the name of the Poesis and Rhetorica pupils who had designed an emblem. ‎Durant l'annee 2004, de multiples manifestations culturelles se deroulent en Belgique pour celebrer la presidence neerlandaise de l'Union europeenne. La Bibliotheque royale de Belgique s'y associe en organisant une exposition consacree a Simon Stevin, qui incarnait deja l'idee europeenne : ne a Bruges en 1548, il emigra aux Pays-Bas pour y poursuivre sa carriere scientifique et pour assurer a ses idees la plus large diffusion possible. En l'absence de toute justification formelle de sa part, plusieurs hypotheses tentent d'expliquer ce depart -emigration forcee ou exil volontaire?- sans etre en mesure d'apporter une quelconque reponse qui puisse emporter la conviction. Aux Pays-Bas, Simon Stevin acquit la protection, la confiance et meme l'amitie du Prince Maurice de Nassau. Simon Stevin fut un theoricien, de tres haut niveau comme en temoignent notamment ses ecrits mathematiques, linguistiques ou cosmographiques. En outre, il fut un praticien hors pair dont les realisations dans des domaines aussi divers que l'hydraulique, la mecanique, la physique et l'art des fortifications prouvent le genie. Comme bien d'autres hommes de science de la Renaissance et des debuts de l'epoque moderne, Simon Stevin consacra beaucoup de son temps et de son energie a realiser des experiences scientifiques : il mettait en ?uvre la methode inductive dont il elargissait constamment le champ d'application. ‎Richard Rolle (d.1439) played a major part in the growth of affective spirituality in England during the fourteenth century. A prolific mystical writer who lived as a hermit and drew his literary inspiration from the great monastic authors of the twelfth century, he nonetheless anticipated many of the teachings of his slightly later contemporaries and his work looks forward to the later fourteenth-century world of increasing lay involvement in spiritual life. While his original audience may have consisted mainly of nuns and anchoresses (for writings in English) and monks and secular priests (for writings in Latin), many of his works can be read as popularizations of the traditions he inherited, and were ultimately designed to reach a much broader audience. The Emendatio vitae is one of Rolle's late works and aims to adapt an originally specialized programme for spiritual transformation to the needs of general Christian readers; most of the last third of the work consists of an arrangement of passages from his earlier writings. This process of adaptation was taken up by others, who compiled works of "Rolleana" out of other such excerpted passages. The second work edited here, the Orationes ad honorem nominis Ihesu, is a member of this little-studied secondary canon, being made up of purple passages from several of Rolle's works, which it presents as a catena of devotions to the "holy name" of Jesus. Besides providing an anthology of Rolle's rich prose styles, the Orationes exemplifies the way in which passages of his writing could be detached from their original contexts and pressed into the service of an important late medieval devotion.‎

‎The work edited here (in linked excerpts), an anonymous composition in 1611 rhymed hexameters, is an example of the exegetical type of biblical versification that became popular from the eleventh century onwards. The poem, likely composed in the middle to late eleventh century, forms a lengthy commentary on the genealogy of Jesus as it is recorded in the first seventeen verses of the gospel of Matthew, but the poet ranges widely over the entire Bible for his material, frequently drawing on the Old Testament (especially the books of Genesis and Kings) for details about the characters dealt with. Some of the characters in the poem are not even mentioned in Matthew, e.g. the first three sons of the patriarch Jacob; and the poet tackles two of the problems presented by Matthew's genealogy: that without counting Jeconiah twice, the division of the forty-two generations of Jesus' ancestry into three sets of fourteen is incomplete, and that the father of Joseph (the husband of Mary) is called Jacob in Matthew but Heli in Luke. This poem's solution to the latter problem is particularly convoluted, and not based on any of the poet's known or presumed sources. In the manuscript edited here, Heidelberg, Universitatsbibliothek, MS. Salem IX 15, dating to the late eleventh or early twelfth century, the poem is accompanied by extensive interlinear and marginal glosses, which provide lexical, grammatical, and syntactical aids as well as summaries, interpretations, and comments on the text, thus giving much essential assistance to readers of verses that are frequently very difficult to construe. The Liber generationis was edited in full by Martin Rodel in 1999; the present edition is of extracts only (totalling 860 verses), preserving as well as possible the internal logic of the text, but reducing its length in order to make the work more useful for teaching purposes and more accessible to a student audience. The 860 verses are accompanied by all their glosses, printed on facing pages; extensive footnotes to both the poem and the glosses supply references to biblical and other sources, clarifications of the biblical narrative presented by the poet (especially when the medieval glosses do not provide sufficient help), and translation aids. The introduction to the edition discusses the content and organization of the poem, its rhyme and meter, the complexity and difficulty of its language and the unusual features of its style, the nature of the codex, and the glosses; the section on glosses includes examples of how the poem and glosses must be read together to form a complete understanding of the text. A select bibliography, textual notes, and three appendices - a list of all the biblical names mentioned in the text, a genealogical table, and a list of the interpretations given to the biblical names in the text - complete the volume. This book will be of interest to students and teachers of Medieval Latin, literary and linguistic scholars, all those interested in medieval glossed texts and the use of such texts as teaching tools, and scholars of biblical versification and exegesis in the Middle Ages.‎
