Modern brown calf boards embossed floral ornaments and gilt title to spine matching calf and red cloth slipcase; library stamps previous owners' signatures; inscription by a censor from Bologna on second to last page l. 25 partially lost due to trimming. Third edition of Bomberg's Rabbinic Bible which includes the five books of the Torah bound together with Haftarot and Hamesh Megilot. With Targum Onkeles and commentaries by Rashi Nachmanides and the First Edition of the super-commentary on Nachmanides by Isaac Aboab. In 1516 Daniel Bomberg a wealthy Christian was granted the privilege of publishing Hebrew books in Venice. Among the first works he printed in 1516-17 was the Mikra'ot Gedolot Rabbinic Bible a folio edition of the entire Bible with commentaries. Pope Leo X gave his imprimatur for this book and Felix Pratensis a monk who had been born a Jew was the editor. Bomberg published the edition in response to growing interest in the Hebrew language and the Bible among learned Christians. The commentaries by Rashi Nahmanides and Gersonides attracted some Jewish readers but the editorship of an apostate and the blessing of the Pope led many Jews to avoid the 1516-17 edition. However the second edition published in Venice in 1524-5 and incorporating the work of the Tunisian refugee Jacob b. Chayim was more successful as was a third edition published in 1546-48. According to Darlow and Moule 5143 'The text is mainly based on the Athias-Leusden edition of 166766 No. 5134'. Beautiful full-page copper plate engraving to frontispiece depicts Moses Aaron King David with a harp kneeling in front of the Ark of the Covenant the sky with God's name suggested by the three 'Yod' letters in the glowing triangle also appears underneath together with a reference to Ezekiel 1:28 which explains the mythical creatures depicted in the cloud. The engraving also includes the title in Hebrew and name Maius as the editor. The magnificent early 18th century binding was most likely custom-made for a wealthy patron bearing his armourial crest on the front cover. Darlow & Moule 5143. The text pages generally clean and crisp with minor browning and occasional spotting light offsetting and blurring of blue-painted lombards in places first flyleaf mounted on inner margin of a1r obscuring part of the penwork here some additional soiling from earlier partial unmounting of that flyleaf free endpapers first and last two leaves with vertical crease. Provenance: Count de Renesse-Breidbach engraved bookplate 'Ex bibliotheca Renessiana no. 4' on front pastedown Antoine Mouradian bookplate with motto 'On abuse du vrai' on front pastedown. A fine copy. ---- Johann Amerbach's first Bible print appeared in 1479 as one of the first printing works from his Basel offizin GW 04236. Further editions followed in 1482 1486 1491 1492/94 and from 1498 to 1502. Ours is apparently "the earliest in a series of corrected Latin Bibles which claim for themselves - apparently with justice - a superiority above all contemporary editions. Gallus Winckellmann Professus Banthensis. The early-19th century signature of �Daniel Kendig� on front endpaper above perhaps an earlier inscription noting Lyra�s commentaries. Then in England the front pastedown with the mid-19th century bookplate of Joseph M. Lybrand rector of Saint Paul�s Church Camden and America with the early-20th century labels of the Philadelphia Divinity School their bookplate and perforated stamp formerly collection number 4436. <br/><br/>This volume is part three of four in the second Koberger edition of the Bible printed in Nuremberg in 1486�87; parts one through three were undated with the fourth part dated 3 December 1487. This second edition was preceded by bible set printed by Anton Koberger in 1485. It was a monumental production incorporating the biblical commentary of medieval Franciscan scholar Nicholas de Lyra 1270�1349 with the additions of Paul of Burgos ca. 1351�1435 and responses to the latter by Matthias Doering d. 1469 as well as the commentary of William the Breton ca. 1165�1225 on the Prologues of Jerome. Part 3 of the set contained the books of the Major and Minor Prophets along with the books of the Lamentations and Maccabees. Nicholas de Lyra�s biblical gloss or �Postilla� encouraged much scholarly discourse throughout the Middle Ages and was frequently reprinted into the 16th century. This edition includes the famous woodcut of Ezekiel�s Vision and the various views and implements of Solomon�s Temple which were first printed by Koberger in 1481 with the complete commentary. In 2006 sold at Sotheby�s London 11 April 2006 lot 2312. <br/><br/>Fifth folio edition of the Latin Bible as �Biblia Utriusque Testamenti� published by Robert Estienne 1503�1559 in 1556 but with the original edition of the new Latin translation and commentary on the New Testament by Theodore Beza 1519�1605; notably this edition appeared contemporaneously with the printing of John Calvin�s Psalms Commentary. Theodore Beza a French Reformed Protestant theologian and Calvinist produced one Latin and four Greek-Latin editions of the New Testament in his lifetime working carefully through extant Greek manuscript sources. Estienne�s great glossed Latin Bible of 1556/57 thus contained the translation of the Old Testament by Dominican philologist Sante Pagnini or Pagninus 1470�1536 first printed in 1528. Based on the Hebrew Pagnini�s text is in the center of each page and Beza�s translation from the Greek is in smaller type to the side with commentary and alternate readings underneath. The Estienne-Beza Latin Bible with its copious notes and ties to Calvinist theology was of considerable importance in the early modern era. The 20 woodcut biblical illustrations were first used in an Estienne edition of the Bible printed in Paris in 1540. An important document of its time and of the humanistic spirit present here in its 4th printing. In the early years of the 16th century the demand for the original text of the New Testament began to mount and Erasmus 1467-1536 soon saw the necessity to translate the original Greek text into Latin. This translation was closer to the original Greek than before. In addition Erasmus contributed text notes. They show mistakes that ancient theologians had made during their translation and revealed misunderstandings that had arisen due to the lack of knowledge of the text copyists. This first text-critical edition of the New Testament was one of the most important foundations for Reformation theology. The commentary "In Novvm Testamentum" with its "Annotationes" were the ferment of theological discussion at that time. It is of great value and was published probably in a total of eight editions as an indepent work as listed by most of the bibliographers. The first edition of this work appeared in Basel in 1519. Later numerous excerpts and vernacular versions circulated. - Some little wormholes in the last 30 leaves some spots otherwise with wide margins and still a very good copy. - VD 16 E 3096; Adams E-891; Bezzel 1215; cf. This second edition was preceded by bible set printed by Anton Koberger in 1485. It was a monumental production incorporating the biblical commentary of medieval Franciscan scholar Nicholas de Lyra 1270–1349 with the additions of Paul of Burgos ca. 1351–1435 and responses to the latter by Matthias Doering d. 1469 as well as the commentary of William the Breton ca. 1165–1225 on the Prologues of Jerome. Part 3 of the set contained the books of the Major and Minor Prophets along with the books of the Lamentations and Maccabees. Nicholas de Lyra’s biblical gloss or ‘Postilla’ encouraged much scholarly discourse throughout the Middle Ages and was frequently reprinted into the 16th century. This edition includes the famous woodcut of Ezekiel’s Vision and the various views and implements of Solomon’s Temple which were first printed by Koberger in 1481 with the complete commentary.
