Small 4to in eights approximately 185 x 135 mm 7 x 5¼ inches engraved architectural title page with the figures of Moses Aaron Jeremiah and Isaiah vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre at the bottom title and imprint in small central rectangle page ruled in red including 2 pillars either side of title the New Testament has only the letterpress title with the imprint "Printed at the the Theater in Oxford and are to be sold by Moses Pitt at the Angel in St. Pauls Church-yard Peter Parker at the Leg and Star over against the Exchange in Cornhil Thomas Guy at the Corner of Little Lombard-Street and William Leake at the Crown in Fleet-Street London Anno 1679. The engraved title was probably inserted in only a few copies - Darlow and Moule. Ruled throughout in red collation: pi1 A-3A8 3B4 3C2; A-K8; chi1 A-P8; A-F8 G4. A1 in the O.T is the Dedication to King James with the books of the Bible on the reverse leaves 3B1-3 in the Old Testament have been misbound in the Apocrypha between A8 and B1. The leaves of text in the O.T. before signature F are printed in the smaller type also used in the Apocrypha. Bound in full calf panelled in gilt on both covers plus a central mounted red and gilt lozenge on upper cover black and gilt on lower cover amateurishly rebacked in calf with no label or lettering all edges gilt gilt inner dentelles turn-ins marbled endpapers. Five raised bands at spine and no title to cover. Shaken cover with some splits at spine edge and heavy rubbing at corners At one time someone had placed a heart shaped emblem on the front/rear cover and there's a faded image of it left. Front endpaper with fancy cursive signed name/date on page that's heavily torn and chipped and moderate rubbing to cover. Creases at title page and first few pages in. The date on the front copyright is only perfectly three numbers and a partial number and the last number looks like it may be an 8. However the New Testament date is 1801. And the date given for the owner when he bought it is 1808. The genealogy section at the part just before the New Testament is mostly filled with names and dates for Jenkins going back to 1740 and it was written in cursive and it was done quite well. Mounted red leather and gilt spine label. THIS IS THE FIRST COMPLETE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CATHOLIC BIBLE TO BE PUBLISHED IN A SINGLE VOLUME FOLIO. The complete Bible containing the Challoner-MacMahon revised text. In excellent condition for its age. There is almost no foxing spotting or soiling in text; no tears; no wrinkling. The two "Admonition" pages after titlepage are loose but still attached. No owner marks. There are 10 fullpage steel engravings on rectos only engraved by Parker Schiavonette Bartolozzi Raphael others. It does appear that one plate has been removed at p. 25 All plates are lightly foxed. Hinges not cracked in or out . Cover extreme tips have leather worn off and spine ends are worn down somewhat. This was a Bible that clearly was used with great care and respect. It is housed in a contemporary hand-sewn linen jacket with hand-embroidered "Holy Bible" on front panel although quite aged this cover is in good condition with just two small chips along one outer hinge and a closed 3 inch tear along top spine end. Good condition. Binding nice and solid. Very Scarce. Pictures available on request. . hardcover

Bible and "book of ages" of the Captain Charles 1811-1873 and Janet 1809-1896 Cooke family. Family Record leaves at the end of the Old Testament filled nearly to completion by four generations of the the family from 1825 to 1954. Additionally laid in are the two marriage certificates accomplished in manuscript of Janet Cook m�re the first dated 1825 to a Thomas Parton the second in 1834 to Charles. All told Janet would have nine children two by her first husband seven by her second. Also laid in: three pages on two leaves of slightly earlier manuscript holograph Bible quotes; and four newsclipped obituaries of Janet and her children Annie and William the last of an Elizabeth McIntosh possibly Janet's great-granddaughter. Though American family bibles are not a huge scarcity it is rather uncommon to find them kept so diligently over the course of four generations. American Bible Society hardcover
