ISBN 9782503516301.‎ ‎Depuis la parution en 1998 de la concordance lemmatisee de la Chronographie de Theophane le Confesseur (IXe s.), et, en 2000, de celle des oeuvres completes de Procope de Cesaree (VIe s.), les editeurs du Thesaurus Patrum Graecorum orientent leurs travaux d'exploration systematique du lexique grec d'epoque byzantine tant vers l'etude des sources patristiques - pour lesquelles la collection a initialement ete creee - que vers celle des textes historiographiques. Aujourd'hui, l'objectif poursuivi est d'equilibrer peu a peu, en terme de nombre de mots, la part du corpus patristique et celle du corpus historique. L'analyse des Peres Cappadociens s'achevera donc prochainement avec la concordance de Gregoire de Nysse et, parallelement, la lemmatisation des sources historiques situees chronologiquement entre Procope et Theophane sera largement entamee. L'historiographie byzantine presente deux caracteristiques bien connues: tout d'abord, les temoignages conserves offrent "une chaine ininterrompue de relation historique", pour reprendre les termes de G. Ostrogorsky, chaque siecle et chaque souverain ayant, a quelques rares exceptions pres, son auteur ou sa chronique; ensuite, les historiens partagent avec les Peres du IVe s. le meme gout et la meme maitrise de la langue classique et de la rhetorique. Comme celles de leurs predecesseurs, leurs productions recuperent et transmettent une part de l'heritage antique. Les deux directions definies ne sont donc en rien antinomiques. Les enseignements qu'elles apporteront contribueront a offrir l'image la plus fidele possible du lexique des Byzantins, objectif qui sous-tend l'ensemble du projet depuis sa creation. Les volumes actuellement en preparation couvriront la periode qui s'etend du regne de Justinien (527-565) a celui de Maurice (582-602). Ils traitent le vocabulaire des textes d'Agathias de Myrina, de Menandre le Protecteur et de Theophylacte Simocatta. Le premier, Agathias, reprend le recit de Procope la ou ce dernier l'avait laisse, c'est-a-dire en 552, et le poursuit jusqu'a l'annee 558. A ses cinq livres d'histoire (60.000 mots) sont jointes ses epigrammes (6.000 mots). Menandre poursuit l'oeuvre de son predecesseur jusqu'en 582, date de l'avenement de Maurice. Seuls des fragments de son texte nous sont parvenus (30.000 mots), conserves principalement dans deux des compilations de Constantin VII Porphyrogenete (913-959), le De Legationibus et le De Sententiis, et dans la Suda. Enfin, Theophylacte conduit sa narration jusqu'a la fin du regne de Maurice, en 602. Ses huit livres d'histoire (63.000 mot) sont accompagnes de ses 85 lettres (8.000 mots) et de deux traites, les Quaestiones Physicae (4.000 mots) et le De Vitae Termino (3.500 mots). Acheves, ces travaux permettront de constituer un index des noms propres dont les donnees rejoindront celles fournies dans les thesauri consacres a Procope et a Theophane. Les chercheurs beneficieront ainsi, en plus d'un inventaire lexical exhaustif des principaux historiens du Haut Empire byzantin, d'un index onomastique et toponomastique complet. Bernard Coulie, professeur a l'Universite catholique de Louvain, est le directeur du Theaurus Patrum Graecorum et l'auteur de plusieurs volumes de la collection. Ambitionnant de decrire l'ensemble du lexique grec des Peres Cappadociens, les auteurs du Thesaurus Patrum Graecorum (T.P.G.) - collection de concordances lemmatisees des sources grecques des Peres de l'Eglise et des historiens byzantins -, ne pouvaient omettre de leur reserver une place honorable. Ce volume presente separement la concordance des oeuvres des deux auteurs et fournit les outils lexicaux indispensables (index des frequences, index inverses, etc.). Il repertorie de maniere exhaustive les mots rencontres (48.174 mots chez Asterius, pour 13.799 formes differentes; 4.181 mots chez Firmus, pour 1.894 formes differentes), et les classe systematiquement sous un lemme, ou entree lexicale (5.479 lemmes chez Asterius; 1.130 chez Firmus). Au meme titre que les autres volumes du T.P.G., il contribue a completer la base de travail indispensable pour les comparaisons futures qui seront appliquees au lexique des Peres Cappadociens, en particulier, et des sources grecques byzantin. Une introduction indique les editions suivies et enumere les nombreuses corrections que l'exercice de la lemmatisation a permis d'effectuer, ameliorant ainsi les textes recus. Outre la concordance, il fournit egalement des outils lexicaux tels des index frequentiels ou des index inverses. Son utilisation permettra alors d'entamer des recherches sur base d'un ensemble lexical desormais exhaustif. Petri de culture classique, il nous transmet une langue riche en reminiscences d'Herodote, de Thucydide ou de Plutarque, son sens du classicisme l'amenant meme a utiliser des vocables homeriques. Homme d'action, ayant personnellement prit part aux evenements dont il parle, il nous offre une description personnelle des realites de son temps, l'empire protobyzantin. Ce nouveau volume analyse et dresse l'inventaire exhaustif des 28.997 formes differentes, reparties en 7.982 lemmes, qui constituent le lexique de cette oeuvre capitale pour la connaissance du VIe s. et la comprehension des sources posterieures. Die marianische Frommigkeit Lulls setzt sich auffallig vom zeitgenossischen Wunderglauben ab, Maria ist nicht bloss Objekt der Furbitte ausserer Guter, sondern Inbegriff ontologischer und logischer Vollkommenheit. So ist sie konsequenterweise nicht nur Ausgangspunkt der Menschwerdung, sondern auch Ursprung und Weg der gesamten theologischen Reflexion. Das hier edierte Buch ist, wie auch in einem der zahlreichen Titel, die dieses Werk im Laufe der Zeit bekommen hat, ausgedruckt wird, ein Mariale in quaestiones difficiles, also kein Devotionale. Lulls Marienkult ist nicht nur Sublimierung seiner jugendlichen Minnelyrik, er ist auch ein Spiegel seiner ganzen Philosophie, die auf jegliches formales scholastisches Profil verzichtet, um sich in einer katechetisch-missionarischen Sprache ausdrucken zu konnen. Der Liber de sancta Maria bleibt im gesamten oeuvre Lulls in stilistischer und inhaltlicher Hinsicht einzigartig. Es ist kein Zufall, dass Jacobus Faber Stapulensis dieses Werk aus der Vergessenheit holte und ihm sehr fruh durch eine vorbildliche Druckausgabe zu einer grossen Verbreitung verhalf. Es ist auch bezeichnend, dass dieser Gelehrte, der in anderen Ausgaben von Werken Lulls den Stil dem Zeitgeschmack anpasste und korrigierte, bei diesem Werk die ursprungliche und unmittelbare Sprache Lulls fast unverandert ubernahm. Dem hier edierten Text hat die Herausgeberin eine Untersuchung uber die Grundlagen des marianischen Diskurses Lulls vorangestellt. Zusatzlich zu diesem Werk wird in dem vorliegenden Band auch ein vom Umfang her kleineres Beispiel des unermudlichen literarischen Schaffens Lulls vorgelegt. Mit dem Liber de passagio hat Lull unmittelbar nach dem fur die gesamte Christenheit schockierenden Fall von Akkon zu den brennenden politischen Fragen seiner Zeit Stellung genommen. In dieser Bittschrift an Nikolaus IV., den ersten aus dem Franziskanerorden stammenden Papst, nimmt Lull auf sehr originelle Art Stellung zu Fragen des Umgangs mit den anderen Religionen, wobei die Frage nach der Gewaltanwendung nicht ausgeklammert wird. Es ist jedenfalls das erste Werk, in dem Lull den Kreuzzug thematisiert. Gegenuber jedem neuen Papst wird Lull dann jeweils seine aktuelle Sicht der Dinge vorlegen. Diese Werke haben in der Literatur zu Lull in den letzten Jahren fur einigen Diskussionsstoff gesorgt. Loin d'etre un recit historique ou une oeuvre de divertissement, elle vise a encourager les moines cisterciens a preserver leurs anciennes normes de vie, tout en repondant aux detracteurs de l'Ordre cistercien. Le Grand Exorde, rempli de tensions internes, fait connaitre la situation de la communaute cistercienne a un moment critique de son developpement. Conrad prend pour point de depart les debuts memes du monachisme pour decouvrir l'elan monastique dont il estime que Citeaux et ses fondations ont ravive la flamme. A partir de la, il batit une oeuvre bien structuree: il met en scene Clairvaux et saint Bernard, les moines les plus celebres de Clairvaux, comme les convers les plus humbles; il pourfend les dangers qui guettent la vie monastique (desobeissance, revolte, excommunication, discorde, retard a entendre les confessions, sensualite excessive du chant). Pour ce faire, il rassemble les materiaux les plus divers -comme le Petit Exorde ou le Livre des miracles de Herbert de Clairvaux- mais n'hesite pas a recourir a de nombreuses sources orales. Et ce materiau, il le refond en une synthese nouvelle, en un recit ordonne, en une interpretation personnelle. Si l'oeuvre est centree sur Clairvaux, consideree comme une source spirituelle d'energie dont la puissance continue d'irradier, en ce debut du XIIIe siecle, tous les secteurs de l'Ordre cistercien, elle est tres attentive a la vie quotidienne des moines et des convers. Le premier de ces ecrits, qui fait l'exegese de quatre passages difficiles de Gregoire de Nazianze ainsi que de la lettre 4 du Pseudo-Denys, date de 634 environ, etant de peu posterieur a l'union promulguee par Cyrus d'Alexandrie entre Chalcedoniens et Monophysites, qui declencha publiquement la querelle du monoenergisme. La christologie de Maxime est deja tres claire, mais il s'exprime encore avec une certaine prudence. Son vocabulaire aussi n'a pas encore la precision qu'il aura plus tard, ce qui amenera d'ailleurs un copiste posterieur a corriger le texte du Confesseur en deux endroits (Amb. Ad Thomam V, 163 et 166 ; voir aussi l'introduction p. CXII-CXIII) ; cette 'correction' apportee au maitre a laisse sa trace dans six (sur une quarantaine) des manuscrits qui nous sont parvenus. L'Epistula secunda au meme Thomas, dont la redaction suit certainement de peu celle des Ambigua, reprend deux exegeses de Gregoire et celle du Pseudo-Denys. A la demande de Thomas, Maxime a en effet exprime plus clairement encore sa pensee. Cette lettre ' qui n'est pas conservee en entier et n'est guere transmise que par trois manuscrits, tous fragmentaires - n'avait jamais ete editee en meme temps que le texte qu'elle entend clarifier. Dans son edition tres soignee, M. Bart Janssens fournit donc pour la premiere fois l'occasion d'etudier les deux ecrits dans le meme volume. ISBN 9782503507781.‎ ‎L'annee du IXe centenaire voit paraitre le premier volume des Fontes Cistercienses qui contiendront les instruments de travail relatifs a l'ensemble des textes concernes du XIIe et du debut du XIIIe siecle, textes narratifs, dont les Vitae et Miracula, et textes legislatifs. Le premier volume est consacre a la Narratio de initio Cisterciensis ordinis, connue communement sous le nom d'Exordium magnum et dont Conrad, moine de Clairvaux, puis moine et abbe d'Eberbach, est selon toute vraisemblance l'auteur. La parution de ce Thesaurus est parallele a la publication dans la Continuatio Mediaeualis du Corpus Christianorum CM 138) de l'edition du Pere Bruno Griesser, corrigee et enrichie. C'est dire que le Thesaurus met ainsi en evidence le probleme historique, indubitablement interessant, qui concerne le retour de Robert a Molesme et l'abbatiat d'Alberic: ces passages, repris en bonne partie a l'Exordium paruum manquent dans certains manuscrits. De facon generale, l'Enumeratio formarum permet de voir le type de vocabulaire utilise. Ainsi les caracteristiques cisterciennes sont-elles mises en vive lumiere, qu'il s'agisse du vocabulaire relatif a l'organisation pratique et juridique de la vie monastique ou de celui refletant l'esprit de l'Ordre. Un tel Thesaurus permet une connaissance nouvelle et une observation rigoureuse de ce recit des origines cisterciennes. ISBN 9782503534213.‎ ‎Four important Byzantine historians have left narrative texts about the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, the gradual disintegration of the Byzantine Empire and the capture of Constantinople by Sultan Me?emmed II Fati? (1444-1481) in 1453 : Critoboulos from Imbros, Laonicos Chalcocondyles, Georgios Phrantzes and Dukas. This new Thesaurus, the twenty-fourth of the collection, is devoted to the analysis of the lexicon of the latter. The Historia Turcobyzantina by Dukas, described by B. Flusin as ? a parallel history of the Palaiologoi and the Ottomans, until the disappearance, already accomplished, of the former and the announced end of the latter? is a text often used by modern historians, but it is not yet studied enough for itself. Dukas uses a mixed Greek language : the author is a scholar, but not a purist, and his lexicon contains many loanwords from languages spoken by peoples living in the Mediterranean world during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The thesaurus follows the edition of V. Grecu wich was published in 1958. The concordance and the lexicographical tools developed for this collection are accompanied by an index of loanwords coming from Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Latin and Romance languages. The authors received the kind assistance of Professor Sophia Kotzabassi who is preparing a new edition of Dukas expected to be published in the Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantinae. As the title suggests, this volume also explores the lexicon of three other texts, minor works which are not long enough to create a thesaurus, if they are studied individually : i) an anonymous account of the siege of Constantinople by B?yaz?d I between 1394-1402, edited by P. Gautier in 1965 (= BHG 1063z) ; ii) a narratio of the siege of Constantinople led by Sultan Mur?d II in 1422 written by Jean Cananos, published by E. Pinto in 1977 (BHG 1064) ; iii) the didascalia of Dorothy, Archbishop of Mitylene, addressed to the inhabitants of Constantinople during this attack and published by Chr. Loparev in 1906. Radbert widmet den Traktat dem Monch Guntlandus von Centulum (St. Riquier), dem er auch die vier ersten Bucher seines zwolfbandigen Matthauskommentars widmet. The commentary on Genesis first published in 1723 as the work of Remigius and which also appears in the Patrologia Latina under his name is actually the work of his teacher, Haimo of Auxerre. Bernard Pez, librarian of the Abbey of Melk and editor of the Pseudo-Remigian commentary has based his edition on only two manuscripts (out of 20) which by chance attributed his commentary to Remigius. What Pez did not know was that the manuscripts he used for his edition were part of a tertiary and late family of witnesses, one of whose primary attributes was the misattribution of Haimo's text to Remigius. Now, for the first time, thanks to the Corpus Christianorum, the authentic commentary of Remigius of Auxerre on the book of Genesis appears in print. This edition is based on the 10 extant manuscripts (as well as a collection of excerpts). In addition, the 20 extant manuscripts of Haimo's commentary on Genesis (which the editor is also preparing as a critical edition for Corpus Christianorum) are also thoroughly examined in order to resolve the disputed authorship of the two commentaries by these important school-masters. The new edition contains a thorough analysis of the sources of Remigius' work, setting it in the conext of Carolingian exegesis on Genesis by documenting the relationship between Remigius' commentary and the work of Alcuin, Claudius of Turin, Hrabanus Maurus, Angelomus of Luxeuil, Haimo of Auxerre and Adrevald of Fleury. This source analysis reveals that Remigius was attempting to compose a thoroughly literal commentary on Genesis, extending the exegetical agenda of Augustine's De Genesi ad litteram to the entire book of Genesis. ISBN 9782503047911.‎ ‎The Opus pacis, a manual for Carthusian copyists and correctors of Latin manuscripts, was written in 1417 by Oswald de Corda, Bavarian-born vicar of the Grande Chartreuse; it is the earliest known example of an attempt to formulate principles of textual emendation. Although the Opus pacis includes discussions of orthography, etymology, and grammar, it focuses on the practical dilemmas of scribes faced with variant spellings, accents, and pronunciations. The twelve surviving manuscripts of the treatise testify to its popularity throughout the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries: it circulated also outside the Carthusian Order (to the Cologne Crosiers, the Cologne Brethren of the Common Life, the Benedictines of St. Matthias in Trier, and the reforming bishop, Nicholas of Cues) and inspired the compilation of similar handbooks in other religious orders (the Windesheim and Bursfeld Congregations). This thesis offers the first complete critical edition of the text and description of the manuscripts, two of which are autographs. The accompanying study examines the Carthusian tradition of textual uniformity, the biography of Oswald de Corda, the sources and structure of the Opus pacis, and the use and influence of the work within and outside the Carthusian Order. The study concludes by showing how Carthusian piety fundamentally inspired and encouraged these monks' concern for uniformity. Although the attitude of reverence toward the written word could inhibit criticism of sacred texts, the Opus pacis, recommends judicious emendation and looks forward to the work of Erasmus and other religious humanists of the sixteenth century.
