Shallow loss and wear to the leather at the corners and spine ends. Outer hinges rubbed with some cracking but the boards and inner hinges are secure and intact. Contents faded; occasional foxing to contents. Plates have lightened a bit. After the end of the NT and before the index there is a 4 page Family Record section that has been filled out with the births and marriages of the Smith family the first record noting George Smith 1813. Appointed to be read in Churches. Printed by C. Eyre & W. Strahan His Majesties Printers'. Engraved title-page for the Old testament with 6 vignettes by J. Alynde. Plain New Testament title-page dated 1771 with Royal Crest. Beautiful full green polished calf with fine gilt decorated borders with five raised bands to the spine with red morocco. label gilt. Greek key border to the head and foot of the spine both rubbed with small edge loss and no head bands. Joints cracked but well attached. No inscriptions. The binding is a superb example of an English binder c 1770's with a gilt decorative frame to the covers and a gilt decorated spine with raised bands and compartments. The binding is as original with lovely hand-made marble end-papers contemporary with the binding and book. There is no clue as to the binder or owner but the British library has examples in this style of that period in its illustrated database of bookbindings. The measurements are 8 3/4 x5 3/4 and 2 inches deep. The pages are printed on thin paper but are crisp and clean and the edges are all gilt. the binding is tight and in original condition.
