Slight wear.<br/> <br/>A fine copy of the first edition of the first Bible printed in the state of Connecticut complete with the separate title page for the New Testament.<br/> <br/>On October 18 1809 an announcement in the "Connecticut Courant" now known as the Hartford Courant read: "Hudson and Goodwin have the satisfaction to announce to the public that they have this day completed their first edition of the School Bible. The type is entirely new imported at heavy expense.and the paper is so good a quality that it is asserted with confidence to be the best of the kind offered for sale in this country." Henry Hudson a partner in the Hudson and Goodwin publishing firm which was also the publisher of the Connecticut Courant was the secretary of the newly-formed Connecticut Bible Society at the time. With an integral engraved general title-page 6 double-page engraved maps including a world map and a plan of Jerusalem and 96 Bible illustrations published by Frederick de Wit engraved by Cornelis Danckerts after Matthäus Merian on 6 double-page plates. The engraved title-page devices on the letterpress title-pages maps illustrations and many of the woodcut decorations and initials including all those on the back of the maps coloured by a contemporary hand with extensive use of gold. Later ca. 1800 blind-tooled calf 2 pair of brass fastenings. Modern ca. 1900 endpapers.
20 302 2 149; 164 10; 2 66 ll.Extra-illustrated and hand-coloured large folio edition of the Dutch Statenbijbel States Bible the translation officially authorized by the Dutch Reformed Church and published with a privilege from the States General of the Dutch Republic. The 1619 Synod of Dordrecht established a committee to prepare the new translation and leading Dutch scholars worked on it for nearly twenty years before Paulus Aertsz. van Ravesteyn ca. 1586-1655 published the first edition in 1637. The 6 maps and the 96 engraved illustrations were produced for insertion in folio editions of the States Bible but in Van Ravesteyn's 1657 edition maps 2-6 by Nicolaas Visser I were originally accompanied by an older world map by his father Claes Jansz. Visser. The younger Visser's present new world map replaced it ca. 1663. De Wit's series of illustrations seems to be quite rare.With ownerÂ’s inscriptions. The tattered margins of the half-title and title-page were reinforced and extended with slips of paper at an early date there are tears repaired into two maps and one text leaf and other leaves have marginal defects some repaired. The paper shows some browning and foxing. Still generally in good condition and with large margins. The binding is scuffed but structurally sound and most of the tooling remains clear. The maps and illustrations coloured by an early hand with extensive use of gold. 18th-century black so-called sharkskin over bevelled wooden boards ca. 1770 with 8 large silver corner-pieces and 2 large silver clasps with catchplates and anchorplates all with matching stamped relief decoration gilt and gauffered edges. The silver furnishings bear Amsterdam city hallmarks with year letter C and master's mark DF. Rebacked with most of the original backstrip mounted on the spine.

Unlike the first issue the Bible is here enlarged with a series of 42 unsigned engraved plates from an unidentified source all with 3- or 4-line captions apparently not the series after the illustrations of Jan Luyken also used by the same publisher. With only the undated engraved general title-page and no separate title-page for the Old Testament but with separate title-pages for the New Testament and the psalms. With only a few minor spots. 20 302; 2 134 12 164 2 66 ll.Beautifully illustrated large folio Dutch States Bible Statenbijbel with 6 six maps including a world map and a complete set of the striking illustrations drawn and engraved by Bernard Picart and others. The maps belong to the larger of two series by Daniël Stoopendaal and were explicitly made for the Keur Bibles with for example Bible scenes rather than figures from classical mythology decorating the world map. With the armorial bookplate of Hendrik Gerardsz. van Couwenhoven 1711-1792 and a short handwritten genealogy of Couwenhoven's family from Couwenhoven's marriage in 1738 to the birth of this last child in 1766. The binding appears to date from the middle quarters of the 18th century so it may have been bound and presented for the occasion of the 1738 wedding. In very good condition. Alden's house "Millwood" in Cornwall PA was designed by Stanford White. .This book is the famous Dutch Lutheran Bible of 1648. It was based on the Low German Bible printed at Madeburg in 1554 which was translated by J. Bugenhagen from Luther's Bible of 1545. It was published for the use of his brother Mennonites in 1560 by N. Biestkens van Diest in Emden and became famous as the Biestkens Bible. Darlow and Moule 'Historical Catalogue of the Printed Editions of the Holy Scripture' No. 3311 says that this edition is "A revision of the 'Biestkens Bible' prepared on the basis of Luther's by Adolf Visscher of the Lutheran Church at Amsterdam. With text printed in gold title-page printed in gold red and black with woodcut device woodcut frontispiece 6 full-page 3.3 x 1.6 mm! woodcut illustrations and headpieces built up from fleurons. The drop-titles of the five chapters and the appendix are printed in red as is the fleuron used as a tailpiece at the end of each. Contemporary richly gold-tooled black morocco by the so-called first "stadhouderlijke" bindery gilt edges.
80 pp.First edition deluxe issue with the text printed in gold of one of the smallest Bibles of its time. It gives an abbreviated version of the Old and New Testament followed by an appendix with "Godtvrugtige overdenkingen" devout contemplations. The frontispiece shows St. Jerome the next five woodcuts show biblical scenes one preceding each of the five chapters and that before the appendix shows a man praying. The present copy is beautifully bound by "the most important bindery working in the eighteenth-century Netherlands" called the stadhouderlijke bindery because of the work it executed for the Dutch heads of state Willem IV and Willem V Princes of Orange. The centrepiece on the present binding is their lovely three acorn stamp.With the tiny bookplate of the well-known art and book collector Hannah D. Rabinowitz widow of Louis Mayer Rabinowitz 1887-1957 a notable collector himself. Lacking the opening flyleaf one quire nearly detached and a tiny smudge in the gutter margin of the last page otherwise in very good condition. Institutional bookplate and early gift inscriptions hinges cracked but still holding spine ends chipped scattered foxing and tanning burn scar to lower board of first volume scrape to spine of sixth volume. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. Sarah Childs married Lord Villiers on 23 May 1804. As heir to Child's Bank and to the property at Osterley Park she brought considerable resources to the marriage and was engaged as an active partner at the bank. Still generally a good volume. 2344double-spread map; 4362 i.e. 366 361-444 2 3- 135 7 leaves; 1114 i.e. 1137pp. 1 vols. Small folio. A characteristic gathering of the three texts the Bible being the Geneva-Tonson-Junius version in an edition that is a very close reprint of Barker's 1607 edition. The general engraved title is undated and the sectional full title-page for the NT is dated 1611 but the printer's colophon at the end is dated 1612. The text of the Apocrypha is included as a part of the contiguous whole. The edition of the Genealogies which is here bound prior to the Bible is one of the several folio printings attributed to Beale that are partially sorted as to minute variants in STC and ESTC; however this example does not conform to the variants in ESTC in regard to the line-breaks in the side note on A1V. The present edition of the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms includes some music settings. This is among the last folio London printings of the Geneva text the standard text of 16th century Protestantism and the text referenced by Shakespeare Donne Bunyan et al. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. Followed by: "To the Christian Reader."; "of the incomparable treasure."; "How to take profite in reading the holy Scriptures."; Contents page including the books of the Apocrypha spelt Apocripha although they are not present in this volume. The Old Testament is complete including the normal woodcuts. A second half title is inserted after Job and before Psalmes with numerous family history details fro the Triming family of Hampshire 1700-1817. 7 leaves of Psalms with tears and small loss. Old Testament ends with Malachi no apocrypha present although included in the contents. The blank leaf and the verso of the New Testament with further Triming family history details. Engraved New Testament carefully strengthened at some time in the past title page with heart shaped centre dated 1599. Followed by: "The Printer to the diligent Reader." with a map of the Holy Land to the verso. The New Testament is complete with notes by L. Tomson but with Junius' notes on Revelation. "The Order Of Time." comes before the beginning of Revelation. Bound with: "A briefe table of the interpretation of the proper names." no title but complete ending with colophon dated 1599. Bound with: "The Book Of Psalmes. 1639" complete. Other than the faults mentioned all pages are clean in clear "roman letter" English text in double columns and with good margins. A well preserved copy of an early 17th century Geneva Bible. "There are many editions bearing this date 1599 which while agreeing closely are yet distinct. No doubt a certain number of copies were originally issued in a mixed state. The nominal date 1599 is probably untrue in almost every case; they were apparently published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker. He settled in Kosraea in 1852 and published several translations of parts of the New Testament from 1862 until his death in 1880 all printed at Honolulu.The printer of the present booklet Henry M. Whitney was born at Waimea in 1824. He was educated in the United States where he became acquainted with the printing trade working as foreman in the printing office of Harpers & Bros New York. Upon his return to Hawaii Whitney became the editor of the newspaper Polynesian. This is the first Dutch translation of Scheuchzer's "Sacred Nature" one of the most splendid German illustrated books of the 18th century presenting what surely is the most impressive combination of Biblical exegesis and scientific illustration to be found in any printed book. First published in 1731-35 as the "Physica Sacra" in Latin and as the "Kupfer-Bibel" in German so-named for the amazing array of copperplate engravings this work is arranged according to the progression of books in the Bible citing passages from those chapters where phenomena from the natural world are mentioned. The typical pattern here includes a textual citation followed by the author's often lengthy remarks on the passage and in many cases a dramatic engraving to illustrate what is said. The plates here are identical to the earlier editions retaining the inscriptions in Latin and German and are the work of Johann-Melchior Fuseli of the well-known Zurich family of 18th and 19th century artists. The engraved scenes are always executed with great skill are generally very animated and are often fascinating. Of the 760 images meant to illustrate the text many are strictly or primarily depictions of biblical scenes; several are simply illustrations of specimens of nature; and a large number perhaps half offer a kind of combination. An example of this last type includes a wonderful scene showing the birth of Man as related in Genesis 1:26-27 depicting not only a startled Adam in his fecund paradise but also 10 images of fetuses placentas and the skeletons of children attached like mounted specimens to the architectural frame of the illustration. According to Faber du Faur it is in this work that "the Baroque attains philosophically as well as artistically its high point and its conclusion. It is the last of those elegant works which do not really contain illustrations to a text but which are in effect composed of splendid plates with a text to accompany them." Scheuchzer 1672-1733 was a prolific naturalist who promoted at every opportunity the most modern scientific ideas though without wanting to risk the accusation of being irreverent. He says that the present work represents an attempt at finding a harmony between reason and revelation though it can also be seen as an effort to promulgate progressive theories under the venerable cloak of biblical commentary. The bibliographies disagree about the number of plates that ought to be present in this work and in other editions but ours corresponds to copies previously sold at auction as complete. Copies of the "Physica Sacra" and its translations show up regularly for sale but almost never does one see the work both complete and as here with a clean and fresh text in remarkably well-preserved and attractive contemporary bindings. Sole quarto printing of the Greek New Testament using Baskerville type i.e. Greek type that Baskerville designed and cut himself. The text follows the 1707 edition by John Mill 1645-1707 with seven variations. This quarto edition was limited to 500 copies and is much scarcer than the 8vo edition issued around the same time. Gaskell - Add. 1; Darlow & Moule 4755. John Baskerville 1706-1775 was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley Hereford - Worcester England he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning varnishing business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book the Virgil of 1757 was also the first to be printed upon wove paper manufactured by a process that he invented. In 1758 he became printer to Cambridge University. Engraved title-page plus 32 “606” = 604; 16 146 50; 55 1 pp.First edition of by far the best edition of the Syriac New Testament published before the 19th-century edited by Aegidius Gutbier which remained the standard Syriac text until Samuel Lee's 1823 edition. For the first book the gospel of Matthew it includes Gutbier's Latin translation of the Syriac at the foot of the page. With the New Testament are two complementary works by Gutbier produced in matching format and intended to accompany it: his Syriac lexicon giving the Syriac words with their Latin equivalents followed by an index of the Latin words; and his extensive notes on the Syriac text of the New Testament with alternative readings from the many sources he examined. The New Testament relates stories that would have first been told and in some cases probably also written down in Aramaic the vernacular language of Palestine in Jesus's time. Syriac another dialect of Aramaic served as the vernacular language of much of the Middle East. The Syriac text therefore provides valuable clues to the Aramaic sources of the New Testament. With a 1691 Amsterdam purchase inscription and two 1859 owner's inscriptions. In good condition with the lower right corner of the engraved title-page under-inked the paper slightly browned and an occasional minor spot or small stain. Binding with some of the vellum tapes broken at the hinge some cracks in the hinges and with the back of the bookblock reinforced but still generally good. Title in red and black. Engraved title vignette; engraved headpieces; tailpieces; initials some historiated. Greek and roman letter. Binding a bit rubbed and lightly soiled early and careful restoration of lower 12cm of spine in vellum ink bookseller's annotations on front and rear pastedowns extreme lower blank forecorner torn from 2I3 not approaching text small receding brown spot from A4 to B4 otherwise a very good or better copy. Second edition of Ludolph Kuster's revision of Mill's New Testament text the latter first published in Oxford in 1707. The first edition of Kuster's revision appeared at Amsterdam/Rotterdam with a Leipzig imprint in 1710. This is an interesting copy in an elaborate prize binding and including a specially printed singleton presentation leaf bearing an engraved vignette of the Amsterdam City arms and eleven lines of boilerplate letterpress with the variables executed in manuscript: in this case in 1760 to one "Joanni Meyer" signed in ink by the examiner. Mill's text accompanied by its "Prolegomena" described by D&M as "monumental" is "perhaps the most famous Greek Testament of the eighteenth century" - D&M 4725. An attractive copy. A preliminary private version of Herbert 2136 with a special preface re: justification and methodology. The wrapper title asserts the text embodies "the Labours of Many Eminent English and Greek Scholars" and Herbert identifies the editors as Samuel Lloyd and George Washington Moon. The edition described in Herbert is "tentative" and has a different collation; an earlier partial proof appeared in 1902 see D&M 1348. COPAC locates two copies of the "tentative" edition and OCLC/Worldcat four but both come up empty for this "Private issue." A bibliographic and textual curiosity. HERBERT 2136ref.
