While a contemporary lambasted Baskett for this and other typographical errors in the text calling it a "Baskett-ful of errors" Oxford historian of printing Harry Carter states that "only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type impression and paper" The History of the Oxford University Press 1975 I p. 171 In 1709 John Baskett purchased the exclusive royal patent to print Bibles in England control of which his family retained until 1799. This magnificent edition of the Bible is among Baskett's most important works highly regarded for its large elegant type; its 60 striking copper-engraved vignette head- and tailpieces; and its many delicately engraved historiated initials. Two distinct varieties occur. This copy is Darlow & Moule's issue A with additional engraved general title page depicting Moses writing the first words of Genesis here bound as frontispiece; vignette view of Oxford on the general title page; and vignette title page for New Testament depicting the Annunciation dated 1716. The present example is noted for both its lovely contemporary black morocco gilt binding and for being ruled in red throughout. Similar bindings on this edition of the bible are noted in both the Wardington Collection and in Mirjam Foot's Studies in the History of Bookbinding p. 409.<br/> <br/>Darlow & Moule 735; Herbert 942. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" Inserted leaf from the Bible printed by Robert Aitken Philadelphia 1782 from Deuteronomy; and 8 illustrations. 34 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. Because of this official endorsement and the reasons behind its production the Aitken Bible is often referred to as "The Bible of the Revolution" Grabhorn Bibliography 131 Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn for John Howell at the Sign of the Open Book unknown books‎

‎Bible in English.‎

‎The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New.‎

‎Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. Very Good/Printing a grand bible had been Baskerville's cherished ambition but the royal privilege belonged exclusively to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Consequently Baskerville applied and was elected printer to the University of Cambridge. An innovator a micromanager a workaholic and an exacting perfectionist he threw everything into the bible project. He invented a stiffer blacker ink for it designed the types and the page layout and demanded smoother paper than was generally available. Ultimately he emptied his own bank accounts and borrowed money when the support of subscribers failed. Indeed he was not able to sell the entire edition of 1250 copies and ended up remaindering more than a third of the press run for pence on the guinea to his enormous personal disappointment and financial pain. The book remains a landmark in the history of English printing "one of the most beautiful books printed in the world" according to the bibliographer Frognall Dibdin a sentiment frequently echoed in Great Britain. This copy with the third longest list of subscribers ending with York. . Imperial folio 50 cm; 573 leaves. Text in double columns. In straight-grain blue morocco with gold-tooled border. Rebacked with original gold-tooled spine laid down. All edges gilt. Later reinforcements to joints and hinges. Light foxing on first and last leaves. Old bookplate on pastedown. Extra shipping charges will apply. References: Gaskell "John Baskerville a Bibliography" 26; Rothschild 2640; Darlow & Moule 857. John Baskerville unknown books‎

‎The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and The New: Translated out of the Original Tongues and With the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised By His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches.‎

‎Cambridge: Printed by John Baskerville Printer to the University 1763. Royal folio 573 unnumbered leaves. A2 1 B-13D2 a-e2 f1. English binding of contemporary full blue-green morocco covers with elaborate gilt border backstrip richly gilt with red morocco lettering pieces stamped in gilt "HOLY BIBLE" and at the foot "BASKERVILLE" gilt edges marbled endpapers. Inevitable slight signs of wear on such a huge book but in all a very good unrestored copy internally flawless. § First edition of Baskerville's masterwork in a magnificent contemporary English binding. Third issue of the subscribers' list as usual. "John Baskerville was a monumental figure in the history of English bookbinding and printing with contemporary accounts of his work ethic revealing a man deeply engaged in virtually every aspect of book production. Yet for most of his life and indeed for many decades afterwards he was decried as a mere amateur. Still other sources show an individual with highly idiosyncratic and paradoxical habits -- he lived with Sarah Eaves for nearly two decades out of wedlock; a devout atheist who was buried in his own backyard without Christian ceremony; a man who 'had wit but always against religion and decency'†F.E. Pardoe in John Baskerville of Birmingham: Letter-Founder and Printer 1975. Paradoxically after taking the position of Printer to the University of Cambridge on 1 December 1758 Baskerville produced one of the few great Bibles. It is a true masterwork expertly printed with impeccable attention to ink type spacing paper quality and ease of use. Published on 4 July 1763 “the adjective that inevitably comes to mind is ‘noble’ and the volume warrants the word. It was conceived and executed on a grand scale… to show that he had now learnt his craft and was able to practice it in a masterly fashion… and the result shows again that Baskerville must be placed in the very top rank of book designers†Pardoe 87. Morison and Day The Typographic Book 1963 write that “Baskerville’s folio English Bible printed for the University of Cambridge is the finest presentation of Holy Writ since Richelieu’s Latin Vulgate printed at the Imprimerie Royal†48. ‎BIBLE IN ENGLISH; VELVET BINDING‎

‎English Version of the Polyglot Bible The & The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.‎

‎London: Printed for Samuel Bagster 1845. A Very Fine Example of a Mid-Nineteenth Century 'Bagster Velvet' Binding.<br/>Complete with the Original Elaborately Decorated 'Bagster' Vellum Case with Original Clasp<br/><br/>BIBLE IN ENGLISH. VELVET BINDING. The English Version of the Polyglot Bible; Containing the Old and New Testaments; with a copious and original selection of references to parallel and illustrative passages exhibited in a manner hitherto unattempted. & The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. London: Printed for Samuel Bagster ca. 1845.<br/><br/>Neat ink inscription at head of title-page "Presented to the Honble Mrs. Baptist Noel 1845."<br/><br/>Two volumes bound in one. Small octavo 6 3/8 x 4 inches; 162 x 102 mm. Printed on India Paper. x 586; ii 188 pp. Thirteen folding maps or plans some with colored outlines five folding.<br/><br/>Contemporary purple velvet binding ca. 1844 with gilt board edges and clasps stamped "Bagster" upper cover with gilt onlay engraved "Polyglot Bible / English Version". Purple velvet paste-downs with rectangular center panel of ivory watered silk matching end-leaves all edges gilt and gauffered. Housed in the original 'Bagster' ivory watered silk lined full vellum case with single gilt clasp stamped "Bagster". Covers decoratively stamped in gilt with onlays of red green and blue morocco. Spine with similar morocco onlays and red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 1 38 inch split to top of front hinge vellum a little dusty otherwise near fine.<br/><br/>This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. <br/><br/>We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here.<br/><br/>Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. ‎THE GERMAN BIBLE IN AMERICA. WITH 25 ORIGINAL LEAVES. Introduction by Don Yoder‎

‎New Haven; Bryn Mawr; New York 2012. 20; 20pp. text in both English and German plus twenty-five original leaves and six additional illustrated leaves tipped into accompanying folders. Large folio. Fine. In a clamshell box. The German Bible in America has a long and significant history reflective of the European culture which gave it birth; the local conditions of Pennsylvania where it rose to its greatest heights; and the rich German-American culture created by emigrants and their descendants in the 19th-century United States. From the first American edition of a Bible in German in 1743 through the late 19th century numerous printers and publishers issued bibles in various formats ranging from large folios intended for lectern use to smaller versions for personal study. This leaf book celebrates the range and richness of these productions indicative of the world of German culture in America in the 18th and 19th centuries as expressed through its most widely studied text in a series of twenty- five leaves. Each set contains two versions of the descriptive text one in English and the other in German with an introduction by Don Yoder Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies Folklore and Folk- Life at the University of Pennsylvania. Further text describes the printers of each leaf the circumstances under which they were printed and other attributes. Each leaf is enclosed in an individual folder. The German Bible in America is issued in an edition of sixty copies with fifty of the regular series and ten additional deluxe copies containing six extra leaves of illustrations from the illustrated bibles included in the collection. This is one of ten deluxe copies lettered by hand. unknown‎

‎Bible in Greek New Testament.‎

‎Novvm Testamentvm Græcvm cvm Vulgata interpretatione Latina græci contextus lineis inserta . atque alia Ben. Ariæ Montani hispalensis opera e verbo reddita . Accesservnt & huic editioni Libri græce scripti qui vocantur Apocryphi ; cum interlineari interpretatione Latina ex Bibliis complutensibus deprompta‎

‎Antverpiae: Ex officina Christophori Plantini 1584. Folio 6 parts in 1; pp. 8 186 2; 128; collating: ¶4 A-Y4 Z6; Aa-Qq4; woodcut device on title page; bound with: Biblica Hebraica Antverpiae 1584 Hebrew-Latin Old Testament Greek-Latin Apocrypha etc. in various pagings from back of book viz.: pp. 20 183 1; 283 1; 84; 203 1; collating from the back: †4 ‡ 6 A-O6 P8; a-x6 y-z8 aa-gg6 AA-RR6; in all 551 leaves; text in double column in Hebrew Greek and Latin; early 18th century calf blindstamped panels on covers red morocco label on spine; covers with dampstains corners bumped and showing small cracks starting at the extremities of the joints occasional light minor dampstaining but in all a very good and reasonably sound copy. Terminal flyleaf with elaborately penned inscription: "Isaac Sharpe flourishes dono Patris 1719." On the rear pastedown is Sharpe's early "Coll. Mag." bookplate dated April 4 1683 - possibly the date of his matriculation at Magdalene College Cambridge. The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume and the Hebrew O.T. at the end with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. See Darlow & Moule 4645 and 5106: "This forms the latter half of the complete Bible in the original languages with an interlinear Latin translation; the whole reprinted from the Antwerp polyglot"; Voet A2 p. 320. <br/><br/> Ex officina Christophori Plantini unknown books‎
