From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" Inserted leaf from the Bible printed by Robert Aitken Philadelphia 1782 from Deuteronomy; and 8 illustrations. 34 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. Because of this official endorsement and the reasons behind its production the Aitken Bible is often referred to as "The Bible of the Revolution" Grabhorn Bibliography 131 Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn for John Howell at the Sign of the Open Book unknown books‎

‎Bible in English.‎

‎The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New.‎

‎Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. Very Good/Printing a grand bible had been Baskerville's cherished ambition but the royal privilege belonged exclusively to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Consequently Baskerville applied and was elected printer to the University of Cambridge. An innovator a micromanager a workaholic and an exacting perfectionist he threw everything into the bible project. He invented a stiffer blacker ink for it designed the types and the page layout and demanded smoother paper than was generally available. Ultimately he emptied his own bank accounts and borrowed money when the support of subscribers failed. Indeed he was not able to sell the entire edition of 1250 copies and ended up remaindering more than a third of the press run for pence on the guinea to his enormous personal disappointment and financial pain. The book remains a landmark in the history of English printing "one of the most beautiful books printed in the world" according to the bibliographer Frognall Dibdin a sentiment frequently echoed in Great Britain. This copy with the third longest list of subscribers ending with York. . Imperial folio 50 cm; 573 leaves. Text in double columns. In straight-grain blue morocco with gold-tooled border. Rebacked with original gold-tooled spine laid down. All edges gilt. Later reinforcements to joints and hinges. Light foxing on first and last leaves. Old bookplate on pastedown. Extra shipping charges will apply. References: Gaskell "John Baskerville a Bibliography" 26; Rothschild 2640; Darlow & Moule 857. John Baskerville unknown books‎

‎The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and The New: Translated out of the Original Tongues and With the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised By His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches.‎

‎Cambridge: Printed by John Baskerville Printer to the University 1763. Royal folio 573 unnumbered leaves. A2 1 B-13D2 a-e2 f1. English binding of contemporary full blue-green morocco covers with elaborate gilt border backstrip richly gilt with red morocco lettering pieces stamped in gilt "HOLY BIBLE" and at the foot "BASKERVILLE" gilt edges marbled endpapers. Inevitable slight signs of wear on such a huge book but in all a very good unrestored copy internally flawless. § First edition of Baskerville's masterwork in a magnificent contemporary English binding. Third issue of the subscribers' list as usual. "John Baskerville was a monumental figure in the history of English bookbinding and printing with contemporary accounts of his work ethic revealing a man deeply engaged in virtually every aspect of book production. Yet for most of his life and indeed for many decades afterwards he was decried as a mere amateur. Still other sources show an individual with highly idiosyncratic and paradoxical habits -- he lived with Sarah Eaves for nearly two decades out of wedlock; a devout atheist who was buried in his own backyard without Christian ceremony; a man who 'had wit but always against religion and decency'†F.E. Pardoe in John Baskerville of Birmingham: Letter-Founder and Printer 1975. Paradoxically after taking the position of Printer to the University of Cambridge on 1 December 1758 Baskerville produced one of the few great Bibles. It is a true masterwork expertly printed with impeccable attention to ink type spacing paper quality and ease of use. Published on 4 July 1763 “the adjective that inevitably comes to mind is ‘noble’ and the volume warrants the word. It was conceived and executed on a grand scale… to show that he had now learnt his craft and was able to practice it in a masterly fashion… and the result shows again that Baskerville must be placed in the very top rank of book designers†Pardoe 87. Morison and Day The Typographic Book 1963 write that “Baskerville’s folio English Bible printed for the University of Cambridge is the finest presentation of Holy Writ since Richelieu’s Latin Vulgate printed at the Imprimerie Royal†48. Eighteenth-century Cambridge-style mottled calf; expertly rebacked to period style red morocco lettering pieces mottling oxidized. An exceptionally nice copy of the first edition of Fulke's refutation of the arguments and accusations contained in the Catholic New Testament which was edited chiefly by Gregory Martin and printed at Rheims in 1582. The Rheims New Testament and the Bishops' version are here printed in full side by side with Fulke's commentary at the end of each chapter. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. ‎THE GERMAN BIBLE IN AMERICA. WITH 25 ORIGINAL LEAVES. Introduction by Don Yoder‎

‎New Haven; Bryn Mawr; New York 2012. 20; 20pp. text in both English and German plus twenty-five original leaves and six additional illustrated leaves tipped into accompanying folders. Large folio. Fine. In a clamshell box. The German Bible in America has a long and significant history reflective of the European culture which gave it birth; the local conditions of Pennsylvania where it rose to its greatest heights; and the rich German-American culture created by emigrants and their descendants in the 19th-century United States. From the first American edition of a Bible in German in 1743 through the late 19th century numerous printers and publishers issued bibles in various formats ranging from large folios intended for lectern use to smaller versions for personal study. This leaf book celebrates the range and richness of these productions indicative of the world of German culture in America in the 18th and 19th centuries as expressed through its most widely studied text in a series of twenty- five leaves. Each set contains two versions of the descriptive text one in English and the other in German with an introduction by Don Yoder Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies Folklore and Folk- Life at the University of Pennsylvania. Further text describes the printers of each leaf the circumstances under which they were printed and other attributes. Each leaf is enclosed in an individual folder. The German Bible in America is issued in an edition of sixty copies with fifty of the regular series and ten additional deluxe copies containing six extra leaves of illustrations from the illustrated bibles included in the collection. This is one of ten deluxe copies lettered by hand. unknown‎

Folio 6 parts in 1; pp. 8 186 2; 128; collating: ¶4 A-Y4 Z6; Aa-Qq4; woodcut device on title page; bound with: Biblica Hebraica Antverpiae 1584 Hebrew-Latin Old Testament Greek-Latin Apocrypha etc. in various pagings from back of book viz.: pp. 20 183 1; 283 1; 84; 203 1; collating from the back: †4 ‡ 6 A-O6 P8; a-x6 y-z8 aa-gg6 AA-RR6; in all 551 leaves; text in double column in Hebrew Greek and Latin; early 18th century calf blindstamped panels on covers red morocco label on spine; covers with dampstains corners bumped and showing small cracks starting at the extremities of the joints occasional light minor dampstaining but in all a very good and reasonably sound copy. Terminal flyleaf with elaborately penned inscription: "Isaac Sharpe flourishes dono Patris 1719." On the rear pastedown is Sharpe's early "Coll. Mag." bookplate dated April 4 1683 - possibly the date of his matriculation at Magdalene College Cambridge. The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume and the Hebrew O.T. at the end with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. ‎BIBLE IN LATIN‎

‎BIBLIA AD VETUSTISSIMA EXEMPLARIA NUNC RECENS CASTIGATA‎

‎Venetiis Venice: Hieronymus Polus 1587. 213 x 146 mm. 8 3/8 x 5 5/8". 12 p.l. 1126 pp. ESPECIALLY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY CALF covers with gilt French fillet frame and oval wreath of olive branches the center of the wreath in the shape of a cross flat spine ruled in gilt red morocco label. Title page with elaborate wood-engraved frame text profusely illustrated WITH 600 WOOD ENGRAVINGS depicting scenes from scripture after Holbein Bernard Salomon le Petit Bernard and others a handful of these a bit indistinct. Front pastedown with ex-libris of Leonis S. Olschki. Adams B-1093; STC Italian 93. Not in Darlow & Moule. A little wear to joints and extremities spine a bit crackled separation at hinges but no looseness occasional minor browning or foxing otherwise in remarkably fine condition the text clean and crisp and in a still-lustrous entirely solid unsophisticated original binding. This is a very well-preserved handsomely bound and lavishly illustrated edition with distinguished provenance of the Louvain Bible first printed in Venice in 1578. Our edition contains 600 wood engravings illustrating the text ranging from portraits of prophets saints and evangelists to dramatic scenes from the histories of the Old Testament and the life of Christ and ending with an imaginative Apocalypse cycle. Many of these are the work of Lyonnaise artist Bernard Salomon 1506-61 known by the sobriquet "Le Petit Bernard" for his small engravings rich with detail. Others are based on the biblical woodcuts of Hans Holbein. The binding here is likely French; the flat spine with just one large gilt-framed panel and the olive branch decoration on the covers is characteristic of late 16th century and early 17th century French work. The exceptional condition here is typical of books from the collection of Leo Samuel Olschki 1861-1940 scion of a family of Prussian Jewish printers whose interest in printing history led to his becoming a celebrated antiquarian bookseller author founder of the journal "The Bibliophile" and publisher of works in the humanities. ‎BIBLIA LATINA With the tractate of Menardus Monachus‎

‎Nuremberg: Anton Koberger 30 July 1477. Very Early Printing of the Bible and only the second Latin Bible printed by Koberger 51 lines and headline double column canon marginalia in the Gospels. With manuscript headlines in red a beautiful opening initial of 10 lines with elaborate flourishes that flow from the very top to very bottom of the page in red blue and green numerous 6 line initials in red and blue some with much longer extensions or flourishes a profusion of 3 line initials in red or blue red paragraph marks and additional rubricating throughout primarily in red. Royal folio 375 x 265mm approx in contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin over thick wood boards probably a Nuremberg binding the boards center-paneled and decorated in blind with a central tool within multiple borders remnants of brass catches on the fore-edge. Manuscript lettering to the spine with wide tall bands. 468 leaves complete. An unusually fine copy especially well preserved and very handsome indeed. An important copy with full contemporary binding intact and in great likelihood coming directly from Koberger’s workshop. A RARE AND EXTREMELY HANDSOME COPY ESPECIALLY WELL PRESERVED. THIS BOOK REPRESENTS ONLY THE SECOND TIME THAT KOBERGER PRINTED THE LATIN BIBLE. This printing was issued in the second year after the first printing of 1475. Anton Koberger was for a number of years the leading publisher/printer of his time. The total list of his printings for the forty years from 1473 to 1513 when he died comprises no less than two-hundred and thirty-six separate works including fifteen impressions of the Biblia Latina eight of which presented material differences of notes and commentaries which entitled them to be considered as distinct editions. "In the actual number of separate works issued Koberger was possibly equaled by one or more of his contemporaries but in respect to literary importance and costliness and in the beauty and excellence of the typography the Koberger publications were not equaled by any books of the time excepting the issues of Aldus in Venice" Putnam II p. 150.<br> This printing of Koberger’s Latin Bible was printed again in1478 and is largely based on the Fust and Schoeffer edition of 1462. The tractate of Menardus is included which is a summary of the books of the Bible with a guide on how to best study them. It was first printed not after 1474. A beautiful example of the magnificent productions during the first generation of printed Bibles the state of preservation and the impressive German binding making it all the more so.
