Double column text in roman type 63 lines to the full column engraved general title tinted by hand in rose pink and light blue wash woodcut headpiece and small ornament on New Testament title-page with continuous register but separate foliation full-page woodcut of Adam and Eve in Eden facing Genesis 31 woodcut text illustrations diagrams and maps woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces; foliation errors as typical; scattered staining throughout tape repaired tear on G2 cutting into side-notes and another on Ffff2 repaired with older cellotape. Contemporary calf over beveled wooden boards old sueded calf spine nailed to front and rear covers this done a very long time ago; catches perished but still a most impressive looking object and a quite decent copy overall of the Geneva Bible in Folio format in a contemporary binding. The Geneva version of the Old Testament translated by William Whittingham Anthony Gilby Thomas Sampson and perhaps others with Laurence Tomson's revision of the Geneva version of the New Testament and his translation of Franciscus Junius' translation of Revelation. "This and many subsequent issues were produced in close imitation of those black-letter quarto editions of the Geneva Bible which had proved so popular." Herbert As they are often found our copy is imperfect bound with additional bits and pieces also imperfect Our copy is lacking preliminary quire A including general title scattered browning and staining throughout two tears just touching text two holes costing a few words. Bound before the Bible: An imperfect and defective copy of the Book of Common Prayer lacks all before quire B; and Speed's Genealogies stained throughout without the map of Canaan. Bound after the Bible: the 1615 edition of Herrey's Concordances last two leaves defective; and Sternhold & Hopkins' metrical psalms lacks title-page quite stained and frayed toward the end. Bound in Eighteenth-century tree calf; worn joints cracked but generally sound. Label to spine states it incorrectly as Geneva Bible. Our copy has an interesting line of provenance as follows: William Albin several signatures dated 1727 1729 and 1732 — Theophilus Jones gift inscription to Thomas G. English binding of contemporary full blue-green morocco covers with elaborate gilt border backstrip richly gilt with red morocco lettering pieces stamped in gilt "HOLY BIBLE" and at the foot "BASKERVILLE" gilt edges marbled endpapers. Inevitable slight signs of wear on such a huge book but in all a very good unrestored copy internally flawless. § First edition of Baskerville's masterwork in a magnificent contemporary English binding. Third issue of the subscribers' list as usual. "John Baskerville was a monumental figure in the history of English bookbinding and printing with contemporary accounts of his work ethic revealing a man deeply engaged in virtually every aspect of book production. Yet for most of his life and indeed for many decades afterwards he was decried as a mere amateur. Still other sources show an individual with highly idiosyncratic and paradoxical habits -- he lived with Sarah Eaves for nearly two decades out of wedlock; a devout atheist who was buried in his own backyard without Christian ceremony; a man who 'had wit but always against religion and decency'†F.E. Pardoe in John Baskerville of Birmingham: Letter-Founder and Printer 1975. Paradoxically after taking the position of Printer to the University of Cambridge on 1 December 1758 Baskerville produced one of the few great Bibles. Printed on India Paper. x 586; ii 188 pp. Thirteen folding maps or plans some with colored outlines five folding.<br/><br/>Contemporary purple velvet binding ca. 1844 with gilt board edges and clasps stamped "Bagster" upper cover with gilt onlay engraved "Polyglot Bible / English Version". Purple velvet paste-downs with rectangular center panel of ivory watered silk matching end-leaves all edges gilt and gauffered. Housed in the original 'Bagster' ivory watered silk lined full vellum case with single gilt clasp stamped "Bagster". Covers decoratively stamped in gilt with onlays of red green and blue morocco. Spine with similar morocco onlays and red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 1 38 inch split to top of front hinge vellum a little dusty otherwise near fine.<br/><br/>This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. <br/><br/>We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here.<br/><br/>Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. The text is based on Martin Luther's version by way of the thirty-fourth edition of the Halle Bible with Book Three of Edras Book Four of Edras and Book Three of Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg Bible. The present edition rumored to have been issued in 2000 copies was printed by Christopher Saur II son of Christoph Saur the elder a native of Wittgenstein Germany. The elder Saur emigrated to Germantown Pennsylvania and practiced medicine before turning to printing. It was he who printed the 1743 first edition. A nice copy of an important early American Bible. Light foxing and soiling moderate wear to first and last few leaves. Good. In a custom cloth box gilt leather label. The third edition of the first European- language Bible printed in America famously known as the "Gun-Wad Bible" after its use in the American Revolutionary War as cartridge paper during the Battle of Germantown. It is also notable for being the first Bible printed from type cast in America. Reputed to have been printed in an edition of 3000 copies most are said to have been destroyed by the British during the battle. The present edition was printed by Christopher Saur II son of Christoph Saur the elder a native of Wittgenstein Germany. The elder Saur emigrated to Germantown Pennsylvania and practiced medicine before turning to printing. It was he who printed the 1743 first edition; the son then printed a second edition in 1763. Folio 6 parts in 1; pp. 8 186 2; 128; collating: ¶4 A-Y4 Z6; Aa-Qq4; woodcut device on title page; bound with: Biblica Hebraica Antverpiae 1584 Hebrew-Latin Old Testament Greek-Latin Apocrypha etc. in various pagings from back of book viz.: pp. 20 183 1; 283 1; 84; 203 1; collating from the back: †4 ‡ 6 A-O6 P8; a-x6 y-z8 aa-gg6 AA-RR6; in all 551 leaves; text in double column in Hebrew Greek and Latin; early 18th century calf blindstamped panels on covers red morocco label on spine; covers with dampstains corners bumped and showing small cracks starting at the extremities of the joints occasional light minor dampstaining but in all a very good and reasonably sound copy. Terminal flyleaf with elaborately penned inscription: "Isaac Sharpe flourishes dono Patris 1719." On the rear pastedown is Sharpe's early "Coll. Mag." bookplate dated April 4 1683 - possibly the date of his matriculation at Magdalene College Cambridge. The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume and the Hebrew O.T. at the end with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. ‎Venetiis Venice: Hieronymus Polus 1587. 213 x 146 mm. 8 3/8 x 5 5/8". 12 p.l. 1126 pp. ESPECIALLY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY CALF covers with gilt French fillet frame and oval wreath of olive branches the center of the wreath in the shape of a cross flat spine ruled in gilt red morocco label. Title page with elaborate wood-engraved frame text profusely illustrated WITH 600 WOOD ENGRAVINGS depicting scenes from scripture after Holbein Bernard Salomon le Petit Bernard and others a handful of these a bit indistinct. Front pastedown with ex-libris of Leonis S. Olschki. Adams B-1093; STC Italian 93. Not in Darlow & Moule. A little wear to joints and extremities spine a bit crackled separation at hinges but no looseness occasional minor browning or foxing otherwise in remarkably fine condition the text clean and crisp and in a still-lustrous entirely solid unsophisticated original binding. This is a very well-preserved handsomely bound and lavishly illustrated edition with distinguished provenance of the Louvain Bible first printed in Venice in 1578. Our edition contains 600 wood engravings illustrating the text ranging from portraits of prophets saints and evangelists to dramatic scenes from the histories of the Old Testament and the life of Christ and ending with an imaginative Apocalypse cycle. Many of these are the work of Lyonnaise artist Bernard Salomon 1506-61 known by the sobriquet "Le Petit Bernard" for his small engravings rich with detail. Others are based on the biblical woodcuts of Hans Holbein. The binding here is likely French; the flat spine with just one large gilt-framed panel and the olive branch decoration on the covers is characteristic of late 16th century and early 17th century French work. The exceptional condition here is typical of books from the collection of Leo Samuel Olschki 1861-1940 scion of a family of Prussian Jewish printers whose interest in printing history led to his becoming a celebrated antiquarian bookseller author founder of the journal "The Bibliophile" and publisher of works in the humanities.
