Contents good and tight some of the plates are somewhat foxed/spotted more prevalent to the top edge the letterpress leaves are clean; a couple of 19th century inscriptions to the front blank of vol. I; last few leaves of vol. I with a vertical crease. A very good copy of this superb bible: the scarce large paper edition. note: Despite the large paper format most of the very brief and isolated notes at the foot of a few ff. are shaved with loss of text and one wonders therefore if any copies exist where the notes are complete - another large paper copy that was sold at auction also had the notes shaved. This bible is famous for it's misprint in Mark vii 27 "Let the children first be killed" instead of "filled". Herbert 1394. Full Leather. Very Good. Illus. by James Fittler. Folio. Liverpool: Printed by J. Nuttall 1806. The title page states "Embellished and enriched with forty engraving." but in fact there are at least 45 each within a decorative border and many with the legend "Engraved for Nuttall's Family Bible and variously dated 1802-1806 though many have the latter date. Finely bound in contemporary full tree calf with extensive gilt decoration to the spine red title label gilt - apparently by J. Gibson of Plymouth there is a contemporary decorative binder's label to the rear end paper - "J. Gibson Publisher and Bookbinder 7 Frankfort-street Plymouth". Large fine red morocco label to the inside front board decorated and lettered in gilt using the same edging tools as the binding with details of the Sloggett family detailing members of the family born between 1761 and 1804 male members only - see image. Original marbled end papers. Binding very good with a little gentle wear rear top corner a little more worn and a very small area of insect damage to the lower spine area joints fine and not cracked. Contents good and tight some pages towards the rear lightly affected by damp to the lower outer corner a few pages with light water stains but not obtrusive and all pages remain in tact. End papers a little worn that to the rear somewhat damaged with loss. A very good copy of this impressive bible in a handsome contemporary binding and with known provenance.
