La forme courte, publiee par Maximilien Bonnet, est ici editee et, pour la premiere fois, traduite en francais par les soins de Frederic Amsler. Le deuxieme volume est l'oeuvre de Frederic Amsler et il fournit un commentaire des Actes de Philippe sous leurs deux formes, a l'exception du Martyre qui sera commente dans le volume III. Sur la base d'une comparaison synoptique, le commentaire met en evidence quelques-uns des presupposes doctrinaux qui ont preside a l'elaboration de la forme courte du texte; pour chaque Acte, il propose une reconstitution de la forme primitive du recit. Dans cette perspective, il s'applique a montrer le caractere composite de l'oeuvre. Il prete attention aux realia, aux donnees geographiques et propose une insertion historique de chacun des documents regroupes sous le titre d'Actes de Philippe. ‎Aux environs de l'automne de 406, Jerome compose, en reponse a une demande des pretres aquitains Riparius et Desiderius, un bref, mais violent pamphlet visant un de leurs collegues de la meme region: Vigilance. L'illustre exegete, alors engage, aux cotes des adversaires de l'eveque Jean de Jerusalem, dans la controverse autour d'Origene, l'avait rencontre quelques annees auparavant a Bethleem, en 395. C'est a la suite de leur rupture et du rejet par Vigilance des ideaux ascetiques qu'est apparue la polemique litteraire: elle concerne encore Origene dans la lettre 61 de Jerome, mais se concentre sur les questions du culte des reliques et de la valeur de l'ascetisme chretien dans la lettre 109 et le traite objet de la presente edition. Le lecteur y trouvera une introduction comportant un chapitre sur les allusions a l'Aduersus Vigilantium dans la litterature de l'Antiquite et du debut du Moyen-age, une analyse detaillee des fragments des ecrits de l'adversaire cites par Jerome, ainsi qu'une liste de 365 manuscrits transmettant le texte integral, et 84 qui en presentent des extraits. La plupart des temoins anterieurs au XIVe s. sont l'objet d'un classement. Le texte lui-meme est accompagne de quatre apparats et suivi de notes critiques, ainsi que de trois indices (citations bibliques, auteurs anciens et medievaux, liste des sigles des manuscrits cites). ‎Lucas, bishop of Tuy from 1239 until 1249, is chiefly known as the author of the Chronicon mundi, his great contribution to medieval history. But he also wrote De miraculis sancti Isidori, a work of hagiography, and in the decade of 1230-1240 while still a deacon, an antiheretical treatise, De altera uita. De altera uita was first published by Mariana in 1612 as De altera uita fideique controuersiis aduersus Albigensium errores libri III: the only edition of the work until now. ‎L'edition critique de Maxime le Confesseur s'est enrichie de deux nouveaux textes: les Ambigua ad Thomam et l'Epistula secunda ad eundem. Le premier de ces ecrits, qui fait l'exegese de quatre passages difficiles de Gregoire de Nazianze ainsi que de la lettre 4 du Pseudo-Denys, date de 634 environ, etant de peu posterieur a l'union promulguee par Cyrus d'Alexandrie entre Chalcedoniens et Monophysites, qui declencha publiquement la querelle du monoenergisme. La christologie de Maxime est deja tres claire, mais il s'exprime encore avec une certaine prudence. Son vocabulaire aussi n'a pas encore la precision qu'il aura plus tard, ce qui amenera d'ailleurs un copiste posterieur a corriger le texte du Confesseur en deux endroits (Amb. Ad Thomam V, 163 et 166 ; voir aussi l'introduction p. CXII-CXIII) ; cette 'correction' apportee au maitre a laisse sa trace dans six (sur une quarantaine) des manuscrits qui nous sont parvenus. L'Epistula secunda au meme Thomas, dont la redaction suit certainement de peu celle des Ambigua, reprend deux exegeses de Gregoire et celle du Pseudo-Denys. A la demande de Thomas, Maxime a en effet exprime plus clairement encore sa pensee. Cette lettre ' qui n'est pas conservee en entier et n'est guere transmise que par trois manuscrits, tous fragmentaires - n'avait jamais ete editee en meme temps que le texte qu'elle entend clarifier. Dans son edition tres soignee, M. Bart Janssens fournit donc pour la premiere fois l'occasion d'etudier les deux ecrits dans le meme volume. Languages: Greek.‎

‎In 1927 M. R. James published Latin Infancy Gospels, identified by him in two related but not identical manuscripts (one the British Library Arundel 404; the other from Hereford), together with a parallel text from the Irish manuscript known as the Leabhar Breac. Later researches brought to light more manuscripts of this Latin work, and also of the Irish text. James recognized that his apocryphal Latin Infancy text was compiled from a combination of the Protevangelium of James and a hitherto unknown text which he named "The Source". Recent research has identified a full Latin translation of the Protevangelium of James. A hitherto unrecognized Irish Infancy Narrative has also been identified in the Dublin manuscript known as the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum. A deep study of this related tradition was called for. This has been carried out over the past ten years by an Irish team in conjunction with Professor Daniel Kaestli and AELAC. The fruits of this labour are published in these two volumes. Volume 13 has a general introduction with a historical sketch of New Testament apocrypha in Ireland and a history of research on the subject. This is followed by a comparison of the Infancy Narratives in the Leabhar Breac and the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum. There are special introductions to these Infancy texts, followed by critical editions of the Irish texts, accompanied by English translations and rich annotation. Next there is similar treatment of the Irish versified Narrative (from ca. 700) of the Childhood Deeds of Jesus (commonly known as the Infancy Narrative (or Gospel) of Thomas. There is then (in volume 14, but with continuous pagination) the edition and translation of an Irish thirteenth-century poem with elements from Infancy Narratives, and both Latin and Irish texts on the wonders at Christ's birth, accompanied by translations and notes. The edition of the Irish material is followed by a critical edition of the full Arundel and Hereford forms of the Infancy Narrative (here referred to as the "J Compilation"), together with a detailed study of all the questions relating to this work. The volume concludes with a critical edition (by Rita Beyers) of the Latin text of the Protevangelium of James, accompanied by a detailed study of the work.. The work contains a detailed study of the Latin translations of the Protevangelium of James and the transmission of this work in the West. The "J Compilation" (a combination of the Protevangelium and texts of Pseudo-Matthew) can be traced back in manuscript transmission to ca. 800, and must have originated some time earlier. Behind it stands an earlier "I ("I" for Irish) Compilation" without influence from Pseudo-Matthew, the form found in the Irish witnesses. It is argued that M. R. James's "Source" may be of Judaeo-Christian origin and may really be the Gospel of the Nazoreans. Among the indexes there is a list of all the Irish words found in the texts. This edition of the Irish and related Latin texts is a major contribution to the study of the apocryphal Infancy Narratives. It should also be of particular interest to Celtic scholars, to students of Irish ecclesiastical learning, and in general to all medievalists. Languages: English.‎

‎The present publication presents the edition of an Irish treatise on the universe, composed in the ninth or tenth century. This work, which purportedly records a revelation of the mysteries of the cosmos uttered in angelic language by the soul of the apostle Philip, is characterized by the vividness of its imagery and the rich diversity of its content. Besides providing the most conservative version of the text, preserved in the Book of Lismore, the book supplies on facing pages a full critical edition of the second recension, found in four further manuscripts. Both versions are accompanied by translation. An introduction traces the text's transmission from the time of its composition down to the final flowering of the Irish scribal tradition in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; undertakes to identify its sources in earlier apocalyptic and cosmological literature; and subjects it to an in-depth linguistic analysis in order to place the question of its date in a clearer light. ‎Au cours de l'annee 1126, dans l'apres-midi, se tinrent au cloitre de Saint-Victor de Paris, sous la direction de Hugues, des entretiens, survivance de l'antique collatio monastique. Elle recoit une forme nouvelle qui lui vient d'une pratique qui caracterise l'ecole de Saint-Victor, celle du recours a un diagramme: a mesure que progressent les entretiens, un dessin est execute par le maitre devant ses disciples qui sont invites a le transporter mentalement en une structure a trois dimensions, celle de l'arche de Noe selon les descriptions de la Genese. Selon une typologie des architectures divines (Temple de Salomon, Temple d'Ezechiel, Jerusalem nouvelle) qui caracterise elle aussi l'ecole victorine, le batiment de Noe est support d'une quadruple exegese (historique, allegorique, tropologique et anagogique): le nef est ainsi chargee des themes centraux de chacun des domaines de la pensee hugonienne. La realisation du diagramme et son commentaire sont une mystagogie, ou le disciple est conduit a l'interieur de la structure et monte vers parties hautes de l'ouvrage. C'est un voyage en soi-meme (l'arche est l'ame), dans l'univers (l'arche est le cosmos) et dans l'histoire du salut (l'arche est l'Eglise), qui est correlatif d'une edification de soi-meme et de la construction de sa vie. Vers 1126-1127, Hugues fait de ces propos un traite en forme, fortement charpente, central dans l'oeuvre du maitre de Saint-Victor, qui touche en cette periode a la maturite de son genie comme au sommet de son influence. Le role que le diagramme avait joue pour les auditeurs devait etre conserve pour les lecteurs. Il etait malcommode de le joindre a un codex (plusieurs metres carres etaient necessaires): le Victorin choisit de rediger les directives pratiques, tres concretes qui, appliquees, doivent permettre a un executant de constituer le diagramme-maquette (ce sera le Libellus de formatione arche) par lequel la lecture du De archa redonnera la parole du maitre. ‎Vol. IV of the series Autographa Medii Aevi is a study of the original manuscript of the Liber Floridus (Ghent, University Library, MS 92). This encyclopedical compilation of the early twelfth century (finished 1121) was composed, written and illustrated by an obscur canon of the Chapter of our Lady in Saint-Omer (France, dept. du Pas de Calais). It may be considered one of the earliest illustrated medieval encyclopedias and its maps, diagrams and pictures (some of them masterpieces of Romanesque art) are world-famous. Due to its apparent lack of logical structure, however, Lambert's work has often been dismissed as an unorganized compilation. Against this still prevailing opinion the present book shows that the encyclopedia is the expression of a highly personal global view of the world. It was to be a brilliant synthesis, pervaded by an emphatic sense of symbolism, allegory and eschatology. The close codicological and textual analysis of the complete work shows also why Lambert failed to achieve his object in its full splendour; how especially external circumstances have caused a gradual weakening of the original train of thought as well as of the original beauty of the manuscript. The book focuses on the fundamental links between Lambert's thoughts and the material structures he had to create to give them their place in his book. Prof. Derolez has specialized for more than thirty years into the study of the Liber Floridus. In 1968 he edited the original manuscript in a celebrated facsimile and text edition. In 1978 his doctoral thesis on Lambert's work was published. The present work is the synthesis of a life's research. ‎D.P. Blanchard fand in einer Handschrift, die im 12. Jahrhundert in der Benediktinerabtei zu Reading (England) geschrieben wurde, einen Traktat mit der Uberschrift: Liber Rodberti abbatis de benedictionibus Patriarcharum. 1911 konnte er in der Revue Benedictine(28) nachweisen, dass dieser Traktat Paschasius Radbertus zuzuschreiben ist. Seine Beweisfuhrung wird in der vorliegenden kritischen Erstausgabe unter anderem durch Wortverbindungen erhartet, die sich ebenfals in Radberts Matthauskommentar finden. Radbert widmet den Traktat dem Monch Guntlandus von Centulum (St. Riquier), dem er auch die vier ersten Bucher seines zwolfbandigen Matthauskommentars widmet. Radbert arbeitete an beiden Kommentaren in St. Riquier, wohin er sich nach Niederlegung seines abtlichen Amtes zuruckgezogen hatte. Er nennt sich in beiden Kommentaren iam senex. Languages: Latin.‎
