Small 4to about 10'' to 11'' tall. Index appendix. Description: Includes a frontis portrait plate a few b&w plates and a fold-out map at the rear. Written from his diary and contemporary notes Wistar's autobiography was intended only for his family and friends. His will upon his death in 1905 prohibited publication of the autobiography for at least 5 years. The original publication of 250 copies by the Wistar Institute was in 1914. Isaac Wistar traveled across the continent with the vanguard of the Forty-Niners; he earned and lost small fortunes as a miner trapper muleteer speculator and lawyer before he was thirty. He helped suppress the California vigilantes in 1856. After his return to Pennsylvania from his western travels his privately raised regiment helped save the Union forces at Gettysburg in the Seven Days Battle. Mintz states "Wistar's narrative of his journey over the Humboldt Sink to the gold areas is well told and quite entertaining."
