Foundation
Collins Mar 1994. New impression. Paperback. Foundation" marks the first of a series of tales set so far in the future that Earth is all but forgotten by humans who live throughout the galaxy. Yet all is not well with the Galactic Empire. Its vast size is crippling to it. In particular the administrative planet honeycombed and tunneled with offices and staff is vulnerable to attack or breakdown. The only person willing to confront this imminent catastrophe is Hari Seldon a psychohistorian and mathematician. Seldon can scientifically predict the future and it doesn't look pretty: a new Dark Age is scheduled to send humanity into barbarism in 500 years. He concocts a scheme to save the knowledge of the race in an Encyclopedia Galactica. But this project will take generations to complete and who will take up the torch after him The first Foundation trilogy "Foundation Foundation and Empire Second Foundation" won a Hugo Award in 1965 for "Best All-Time Series". It's science fiction on the grand scale; one of the classics of the field. -- "Brooks Peck Collins paperback

Foundation and Earth
Grafton Oct 1986. Hardcover. Written after the original trilogy and foundation's edge but before "prelude" and "forward the foundation" this novel gives us the conclusion to the foundation series. In foundation's edge the ever mystic foundation and second foundation were reduced to triviality by newcomers on the planet Gaia who have had a superior grip on things all along. For me this somewhat spoils the mystique of the first three books however in "foundation and earth" this storyline is used quite effectively to strengthen the link with the robot series as the search for earth continues. n Readers of the original series may be disappointed in the lack of twist and turns in the plot as this book only really concerns itself with one storyline which plods rather lethargically to its conclusion. You almost get the feeling someone is behind asimov with a cattle prod trying to get as many words out him as possible for what is essentially a short story forced out into a novel. Nevertheless it is asimov and as such there is no predictability and while no two characters are really that different from one another there's a great intellectual weight behind the dialogue and narrative. Isaac Asimov
The Naked Sun
Collins Oct 1993. Re-issue. Paperback. While this is basically a second science fiction/mystery featuring the team of Earth NYC police detective Elijah Bailey and android R. Daneel Olivaw the future history thread is taken further as Bailey's determination to spur interest on Earth in colonization on other worlds steadily increases. As he works to deal with his agoraphobia having never been outside Earth's "caves of steel" previously this determination becomes ever more obsessive.nThe mystery itself borrows from the classic "locked room" mystery genre. This murder could not have happened because the Solarians can't stand being in each other's presence long enough to murder another. However it did happen and since husbands and wives do need to be in each other's presence for purposes of procreation the victim's wife is the obvious suspect. nBailey is hampered in his investigation by three factors: his agoraphobia the Solarians' aversion to be in another's presence presence of an Earthman being even worse than the presence of another Solarian since Earthmen are considered disease carriers and R. Daneel Olivaw's over-protectiveness due to his adherence to the three laws of robots. nAll in all this is indeed a well-crafted mystery as well as science fiction novel and an excellent early novel in Asimov's future history. Robots and Empire
Collins Jan 1994. Re-issue. Mass Market Paperback. This book is one of Asimov's most enjoyable and I am currently re-reading it for the second time in 9 years. nParticularly the ruminations between Giskard and Daneel. Daneel maybe the humanform but it is Giskard that is the more powerful robot and between the two of them they surmise quite amazing insights on the human mind and how that plays off their own robotic laws.nTheir eventual discussions lead them to the development of a three laws of humanics and the possibility of predicting human behaviour on a mass scale and tying this in to Hari Seldon's psychohistory from the foundation series.nBuy this book and really get into the positronic heads of the two robots it won't disappoint and it is a perfect precursor to the later foundation series. I read Foundation first and then this and the related robot stories and I think this works best as the robot books do unleash a lot of hidden information that is only alluded to in the Foundation series. Isaac Asimov
The End of Eternity
HarperCollins Publishers Ltd Aug 1971. Re-issue. Paperback. This was the Good Doctor's response to Heinlein's seminal 'By His Bootstraps': a time travel novel that adds more to the mix than just man-goes-back-to-meet-his-grandfather. nAsimov envisions a society that has tasked itself with improving the lot of mankind by introducing carefully calculated changes in the time flow a society of 'Eternals' that live outside of the normal time stream in their own environment constructed with full living habitats in each century all powered by a thin line to the far future when our sun goes nova. It is a caste society with each individual rigidly relegated to the status and job they are deemed best suited for from Maintenance to Computer to Technician. The individuals are recruited from the normal time flow as the Eternals by their own rules are forbidden to have children. nAndrew Harlan is one such recruit who is quickly tabbed as having the emotional makeup and intellectual skills to be a Technician one of those who actually implement changes in 'normal' time. Somewhat naive a little bit of an aesthetic who is somewhat bothered by hedonistic societies that he is sometimes required to observe or change he finds himself in a quandary when he falls in love with a lady from such a society. Determined to have her he decides on actions that he knows might bring about the end of Eternity for he has determined a great secret just how Eternity was started in the first place. nAsimov unravels the mysteries and paradoxes of this situation in his usual inimitable style carefully laying down the parameters of the problem leaving clues lying about here and there which Harlan obsessed as he is blithely ignores all leading to a grand climax that gives new perspective to the traditional time paradox problem. The idea of time 'inertia' where the effect of changes that are introduced to the time line slowly die out is an interesting one and is carefully folded into the plot line. Though other books envisioned a corps of people who manage time the society shown here is better fleshed out than just about all previous attempts not to be surpassed until Fritz Leiber's The Big Time. And possibly there would not be another better worked out 'solution' to the basic riddle of the time paradox until Heinlein's 'All You Zombies.' appeared. As an intellectual exercise then this book is excellent. nBut as is also typical for Asimov his characterization is somewhat weak although he does a better job here than in some of his other works. Harlan is too one-dimensional too driven a little too arrogant about his own abilities to be totally believable. Noys his ladylove is almost a nonentity although she will become one of the lynch-pins of the final resolution. And Computer administrator Twissell is very close to a stereotype. Still the characters are adequate to move the plot and as this is an idea driven novel not one of character this failing is not fatal to the enjoyment of the book. nThis is one of the very few Asimov novels that is not part of his Foundation or Robot sets. Read it if for no other reason to see just what he could do outside of those confines.n--- Reviewed by Patrick Shepherd hyperpat HarperCollins Publishers Ltd paperback

It is part anthology part autobiography and as such tells us not only what the stories were but what they meant to Asimov and the other future writers who would together create the 'Golden Age'.nSome of these stories are very naive - as science as literature or both. Second Foundation
Collins Mar 1994. New impression. Paperback. Whilst it is best to read second foundation after 'foundation' and 'foundation and empire' it is not essential as the prologue fills you in on the basics of the previous two novels.nThe book goes a long way to explain the purpose of the mysterious second foundation but the main focus is on its location and the search for it by both the mule and the first foundation.nThe first half puts order into the chaotic situation left by the events in 'foundation and empire' and follows many twists and schemes that make it entirely engrossing without giving the slightest hint of the dramatic ending.nThe second half provides the real substance of the book a rebellion of the first foundation against the ideals of the second foundation. This leads the reader to question the entire idea of psychohistory as the first foundation does not like to think of itself as being 'controlled' by the second even though it knows that the interference of the second foundation will result in a bright peaceful future for mankind.nThe book is laid out with a new twist to the plot in every chapter making it almost impossible to put down especially towards the end. nThe most interesting parts are meetings of the second foundation members which explain the inner workings of the seldon plan along with how the arrival of the mule affected it.nThe characters are well presented and are developed only as much as is necessary to keep the fast pace of the novel going but are entirely believable and link in with the characters in the previous books.nSome people like to read the last page of a book first doing this with second foundation and indeed with the entire foundation series will ruin the book utterly. The Robots of Dawn
Voyager Jan 1994. Re-issue. Paperback. This was written much later than the original two robot novels the three Empire novels and the Foundation trilogy. It and the following book ROBOTS AND EMPIRE link the first two robot books with the Empire series and leads up to Foundation.nThere are a couple of points easy to miss here. First psychohistory is first suggested by Dr. Fastolfe and then advanced by the two robots. Secondly while there is a mystery involved here the emphasis is on the future of space exploration and who is going to be in it. The original pioneers into space have become spoiled by their reliance on their robots and no longer have the spirit of adventure necessary to continue further exploration and yet they are fearful of the idea of generally despised Earth people colonizing planets. nSo much indeed is at stake here. For full enjoyment I suggest reading first the Susan Calvin stories and also "The Bicentennial Man" which are in Asimov's THE COMPLETE ROBOT and then THE CAVES OF STEEL and THE NAKED SUN the first two Elijah Bailey & R. Daneel Olivaw novels. And be prepared for this book to be more centered on mankind's future venturing into space than in the mystery element. Voyager paperback

Isaac Asimov
The Gods Themselves
Grafton Dec 1973. New Ed. Paperback. For 14 years of a career stretching from 1939 to his death in 1992 Isaac Asimov wrote little SF and instead produced popular non-fiction in enormous quantities. "The Gods Themselves" 1972 was his "comeback" SF novel welcomed by both Hugo and Nebula awards.nIt opens in the world of Big Science that Asimov knew well full of in-fighting and the race to publish first. The Inter-Universe Electron Pump sucks unlimited energy from nothing making all power stations obsolete and bringing a new golden age. No one--especially not the scientist who got the credit--wants to listen to the doomsayer Lamont who calculates that the pump's side effects may detonate the Sun. Worse there's no kudos for him: "And no one on Earth will live to know I was right".nPart two moves to the dying parallel universe whose hyper-intelligent aliens actually invented the pump and don't care what happens to our Sun. Asimov cleverly focuses on three immature aliens whose intelligence is less daunting and who slowly learn--with very different personal reactions--about their race's weird analogue of sex about the pump's moral implications and eventually about the unexpected meaning of maturity. These are the most original engaging aliens Asimov ever created.nPart three is set in a carefully worked-out Moon colony and grapples with the "para-physics" of inter-universe loopholes. Can a politically acceptable replacement for the pump be developed Solid workmanlike SF with far more talk than action: one of Asimov's rare standalone novels. --"David Langford" Grafton paperback

Asimov's Mysteries
Grafton Oct 1969. New Ed. Paperback. Whilst the science behind the stories is now a little dated the joy is that the mysteries themselves still work. What is particularly interesting is that the science became outdated even as Asimov presented these tales and he himself recognises the fact - for example the twist in The Dying Light depends on the then current knowledge of Mercury which was that it was a planet that did not spin - in an edit for the collection written in 1965 Asimov notes that this is now incorrect and there's a certain charm about that but the testament to his skill is that even when you know this it doesn't detract from enjoying the story.rnrnSome of the stories feature a character called Dr Urth an extraterrologist who refuses to travel on any space device and is confined to leaving his home only by foot. He reminds me a great deal of Nero Wolfe who similarly will not leave his house and like Nero Wolfe he has great deductive powers. Stories such as The Singing Bell and The Key make great use of his deductive reasoning in a way that makes him human albeit a slightly pompous odd-bird of a human but will also have you slapping your forehead as you wonder how come you didn't come to that conclusion.rnrnMy favourite story in this particular collection is the last - The Billiard Ball is a murder mystery that combines billiards arrogance one-upmanship and murder in an ingenious and utterly delightful way that will make you pleased to see the criminal get away with it. rnrnWhilst some of the science is a little complicated you never feel overwhelmed and Asimov's careful explanations are not partonising but instead enlightening and even more enjoyable. These stories work both as science fiction and as mysteries and as such will stand the test of time. Grafton paperback
