‎Grafton Oct 1969. New Ed. Paperback. Whilst the science behind the stories is now a little dated the joy is that the mysteries themselves still work. What is particularly interesting is that the science became outdated even as Asimov presented these tales and he himself recognises the fact - for example the twist in The Dying Light depends on the then current knowledge of Mercury which was that it was a planet that did not spin - in an edit for the collection written in 1965 Asimov notes that this is now incorrect and there's a certain charm about that but the testament to his skill is that even when you know this it doesn't detract from enjoying the story.rnrnSome of the stories feature a character called Dr Urth an extraterrologist who refuses to travel on any space device and is confined to leaving his home only by foot. He reminds me a great deal of Nero Wolfe who similarly will not leave his house and like Nero Wolfe he has great deductive powers. Stories such as The Singing Bell and The Key make great use of his deductive reasoning in a way that makes him human albeit a slightly pompous odd-bird of a human but will also have you slapping your forehead as you wonder how come you didn't come to that conclusion.rnrnMy favourite story in this particular collection is the last - The Billiard Ball is a murder mystery that combines billiards arrogance one-upmanship and murder in an ingenious and utterly delightful way that will make you pleased to see the criminal get away with it. rnrnWhilst some of the science is a little complicated you never feel overwhelmed and Asimov's careful explanations are not partonising but instead enlightening and even more enjoyable. These stories work both as science fiction and as mysteries and as such will stand the test of time. Grafton paperback‎

‎Grafton May 1971. New Ed. Paperback. This is a collections of shortish stories which were written by Asimov mostly for magazines between 1941 and 1967. Apparently he was sick of people telling him "Nightfall" was the best story he'd ever written & wanted to put it with other stories which were just as good! This book only has 5 stories Nightfall Green Patches Hostess Breeds There a Man. and C-Chute - novelettes rather than short stories. Nightfall TWO has more shorter stories. And he's right - the others are just as good as Nightfall! They are a wide and varied selection - Nightfall itself is a psychological thriller set on another planet far away and Breeds There a Man. is set in the near future of Earth. All of the stories are well written the characterisation is consistently good and sometimes great and the plots are about as believable as sci-fi gets. Both this book and it's sequel are a great introduction to Asimov for someone who hasn't come across him before or a good reminder of his earlier work for those who have. Grafton paperback‎

This is a collection of Asimov's robot short-stories many of them aimed at testing his three laws of robotics.rnrnThis particular collection includes four Susan Calvin stories of which my favourites were Lenny which gives Calvin a robot child of her own and Galley Slave an ingenious look at a devious academic who is determined to discredit the use of robots. My favourite story in the collection though is Let's Get Together a cold war story about a plot to use of human-like robots to take over the United States - it's truly ingenious and v. tense.rnrnConsidering that these stories were written between the 1940s and 1960s it's not surprising that some of the technology is out of date but the basic integrity of the stories and Asimov's use of mystery still holds the attention. In particular I enjoy Asimov's spare use of prose - there's nothing flashy about his writing and the bare style makes it even easier to believe and Susan Calvin is one of the strongest female characters in science fiction - strong cold and high-minded she runs rings around every male she comes across. ‎Collins Mar 1994. New impression. Paperback. I totally liked the pattern that Isaac Asimov established in "Foundation" the first volume in what we know refer to as the original Foundation trilogy. Hari Seldon created the revolutionary science of psychohistory and mapped out a future for humanity that would allow thirty thousand years of barbarism between the existing galactic empire and the future one to be reduced to only one thousand years. Through the effort of the psychohistorians the Foundation was established with its encyclopedists. Then we saw the rise of the Mayors the Traders and the Merchant Princes each representing a step on the path laid out with mathematical precision by Hari Seldon over the first two centuries of the millennium he plotted out.nI was looking forward to a continuing series of Seldon Crises as the Foundation played out the rise of human civilization thinking that what we had hear with what Arnold Toynbee had done with his study of ancient civilizations extended into a future that covered an entire galaxy. But Asimov was setting us up for something unexpected in "Foundation and Empire"; the idea was that at this stage the Foundation would be threatened by the final power play of the dying Empire. But the universe is apparently tired of Hari Seldon playing with his mathematically loaded dice and has thrown the entire plan into doubt by creating a mutant nicknamed "The Mule." Now the Foundation the Seldon Plan and the entire galaxy is facing a new and powerful threat. nWhen I first read "Foundation and Empire" I was rather dismayed at the big change in direction. But of course Asimov knew what he was doing. He had already proven the validity of psychohistory at least within the context of his futuristic novel and there really is no reason to put out another four books at two hundred years apiece to complete the plan. Historians might find this interesting but Science Fiction fans were going to want more than that from Asimov. Indeed the Mule proves to be both in terms of the story and the trilogy the link between the Foundation and the Second Foundation. The Foundation trilogy is classic science fiction from the genre's self-proclaimed Golden Age and even if the writing style seems dated or quaint it remains a seminal series. Collins paperback‎
