(jt)Philippsohn, Ludwig. Anna Maria Goldsmid, translator.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RELIGIOUS IDEA IN JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY AND MAHOMEDANISM: CONSIDERED IN TWELVE LECTURES ON THE HISTORY AND PURPORT OF JUDAISM DELIVERED IN MAGDEBURG, 1847.
London: Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1855. 8vo. Xii, 268 pages. First edition. Translated from the German, with notes. Ludwig Philippsohn was the most famous son of Moses; a Reform preacher in Magdeburg, he nevertheless "tried to steer a middle course between Reform and Orthodoxy. He was among the initiators of the Rabbinical Synods of Brunswick (1844) , Frankfort (1845) , and Breslau (1846) , but was critical of their decisions. One of his projects was the establishment of a modern institution for training scholars, rabbis, and teachers. His newspaper was also dedicated to the struggle for emancipation in all parts of Germany and Europe and fought discrimination and anti-Semitism. Philippson published a popular translation of the Bible which went through three editions (1854, 1858, 1878) together with a revised edition illustrated by Dorm (1875) . Along with I. M. Jost and A. Jellinek he founded the Institut zur Foerderung der Israelitischen Literatur (1854) whose main achievement was the publication of H. Graetz's history. " (EJ) SUBJECT(S) : Judaism. ?i?ek Slavoj
L'islam e la modernità. Riflessioni blasfeme
br.

[19TH CENTURY LITHOGRAPHED VIEW OF MECCA].
[A FINE LITHOGRAPHED MEDINA] Medina al-Munawwara ali sâhibhâ afzal al-tahiyya.
Very Good Arabic Original b/w lithographer print of Medina. 21,5x17,5 cm. In Arabic. 1 p. [A FINE LITHOGRAPHED MEDINA] Medina al-Munawwara ali sâhibhâ afzal al-tahiyya. It shows Medina city with its building and walls besides its environment. Medina is the capital of the Al-Madinah Region in Saudi Arabia. At the city's heart is al-Masjid an-Nabawi ('The Prophet's Mosque'), which is the burial place of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. Medina is one of the three holiest cities in Islam, the other two being Mecca and Jerusalem. Medina was Muhammad's destination in his Hijrah (migration) from Makkah, and became the capital of a rapidly increasing Muslim Empire, under Muhammad's leadership, serving as the power base of Islam, and where Muhammad's Ummah (Community), composed of both locals and immigrants from Muhammad's original home of Mecca, developed. Medina is home to three prominent mosques, namely al-Masjid an-Nabawi, Quba Mosque, and Masjid al-Qiblatayn ('The mosque of the two Qiblas'). Muslims believe that the chronologically final surahs of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad in Medina, and are called Medinan surahs in contrast to the earlier Meccan surahs.
