People of Turkey, with an estimated number of 120,000 (2006 estimate), adhering to Alevism, speaking Turkish. They largely inhabit mountainous regions in the Antalya region.Some live in all-Tahtaci communities, others among other ethnic groups. The main village with only Tahtaci is Akcenis, while their main centre is the town of Gömbe. Akcenis is one of its regions best maintained, traditional villages. Their name comes from Turkish for "woodcutters", reflecting their livelihood in mountain regions. The Tahtacis are still organized into clans. Most live from agriculture and forestry. A small minority are still semi-nomadic, exploiting the opportunities of the mountains through summer. The summer season traditionally begins at March 22. This is also the time of the year for their New Year, Nevruz. In its festival, the Tahtacis celebrate their late relatives. There is another important festival in June, staged in Gömbe and a farmers' fair in late August. Tahtacis are, together with other Alevis, historically victims of Sunni Muslim persecution, and are one of the taqiyya groups in the Middle East. By this, they have accepted to be labelled Muslims, and mosques have been forcibly built in their communities. Today, it appears that there are few specific problems in their relation with Muslims. The Scopes trial (1925) fuelled discussion in the United States on the social and political implications of Darwinism. For the defenders of the 1925 Tennessee law - which prohibited the teaching of Darwinism in schools - Darwinism was, amongst other things, responsible for the German militarism which eventually led to the First World War. This view was supported by Ismail Fennî, a late Ottoman intellectual, who authored this book immediately after the trial which aimed to debunk scientific materialism. In it, he claimed that Darwinism blurred the distinction between man and beast and thus destroyed the foundations of morality. However, despite his anti-Darwinist stance, Ismail Fennî argued against laws forbidding the teaching of Darwinism in schools and emphasized that even false theories contributed to the scientific improvement. Indeed, because of his belief in science, he claimed that Muslims should not reject Darwinism if it were supported by future scientific evidence. It is composed of 7+1 chapters to criticize the materialist and positivist philosophical movements and especially the work of the positivist German philosopher Ludwig Bücher 'Kraft und Stoff'. The first part of the book focuses on the evidence presented of the proof of god in the Western and Islamic philosophies. In the second chapter, the issue of immortality of soul and spirit is addressed. In the third chapter, 'the wahdat al-wujud' (vahdet-i vücûd) current is examined. The fourth chapter, examined some famous scholars' thoughts about the matter, materialism, laws of nature, etc. In the fifth chapter, the work of the positivist German philosopher Büchner 'Kraft und Stoff', in the sixth chapter, monism (monism), in the seventh ch. positivism is criticized. In the last ch., there are descriptions and some thoughts on the theory of evolution and the Indian fakirs (fakers). Ismail Fenni Ertugrul was a Turkish mystic, philosopher, writer, musician, lyricist, and composer. He studied traditional madrasah education and learned Arabic and Persian. He was in various state posts. After the retirement, he began to be interested in poetry, music, and philosophy. First and only edition of this exceedingly rare first book on Muslims and Islam in the Comoro Islands of Africa, located in the Mozambique Channel to the north-west of Madagascar and facing Mozambique, including Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Ndzuwani (Anjouan), Mwali (Moheli) and Mayotte (Maore) Islands. The book gives detailed information about the races, customs, and traditions of the natives of the archipelago, the introduction of Islam to the islands, and how influential it was on the people as well as on their education, social structure and the population of the archipelago. The work carried out in the context of missionary activities is also discussed in detail, and such information is supported by photographs, statistical tables and chronology of the islands. According to the information given in the work, Muslims first came to Yuhana Island in 750 AD and began to settle on the island. Since 854, there are claims that the Ismailis, a Shiite community, and then the Fatimid prince came to the islands and ruled for a period. Especially Arabs, Iranians, and Indians, who came and settled on the islands mostly for trade or travel, introduced Islam to the islands' natives, strengthened their ties with marriages and thus increased the population and influence on the islands and became instrumental in the establishment of Islam. Okday also describes the process of French exploitation that started when Comoros fell into the hands of the French, each of whom was under the control of the Malagasy despite England and Germany, and got the support of their pirates. This book has rich and attractive photos of natives of the archipelago, and other peoples who lived on the islands like Arabs, traditional homes and streets, Sultan Ahmad of the Comodo, statesmen and clergies, Prince Said Mohammad, women, and a French ship named 'La Bourdonnaise' as well as four maps showing the African continent and each of the islands. Ismail Hakki Tevfik Okday was an Ottoman intellectual and military commander, who participated in the First Balkan War, the Great War, and the Turkish War of Independence. He was born in Athens as the son of Ahmet Tevfik Pasha, who was then the Ottoman Ambassador to Greece, and later became the last Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original three autograph letters. 1+1+1 p. 'Ismail Pirge Biçak, Destere ve Tarak Imal ve Satis Yeri' letterhead. Signed by Ismail Pirge, who was the most important Turkish knife and pocketknife craftsman and manufacturer in Bursa city, third of six generations. They are two kind request letters. Written to Osman Bey. Dated 1948. In Ottoman script. One is written by a pencil, another is by a fountain pen with a black ink. Between the years 1877-1878 the Ottoman - Russian War (93 Harbi) after the Turks from the Balkans migrated to Anatolia, there was also a knife master Ismail Bey. In 1879, he started to work in Yahya Usta's shop (Yesilyayla Biçakçisi) in Okçular Çarsisi (one of famous bazaar which means 'Archery Bazaar' in Bursa city which still has touristic crafts) and started to produce knives and agricultural tools. When he died at a young age in 1885, his son Mehmet (Pirge) continued to do the affairs of Ismail Usta. The art of knives was thus passed on from father to son. In 1934, Mehmet Bey received the surname "Pirge" with Turkish Surname Law which means 'master who trained masters'. Ismail Pirge was son of Mehmet Pirge. At Okçular Bazaar, he and his craftsmen produced knives and accelerated trade with manufacturing. Thus, he began sending his products to a large part of Turkey, Iraq and Egypt in the 1970s. These autograph letters shed light on early history of this art comes from Ottoman tradition.
