Confrontés à cette conquête aux proportions inédites, comment les chrétiens du Moyen Âge réagirent-ils, face à ce qu'ils percevaient comme une menace épouvantable, face aux Sarrasins et à leur " loi " À cette foi nouvelle, certains se convertirent ; d'autres prirent les armes pour lutter contre elle. D'autres encore choisirent de combattre par le verbe cette religion si orgueilleusement triomphante, qui semblait dire aux chrétiens que leur Dieu les avait abandonnés. C'est ainsi que, entre le VIIe et le XIIIe siècle, nombreux furent les polémistes qui prirent la plume pour en saper les fondements mêmes. L'islam ? Au pire, un culte païen, au mieux une hérésie. Mahomet ? Une nouvelle idole, ou un faux prophète lubrique. Le Coran ? Un tissu d'insanités, dont on cite des passages évidemment falsifiés. Au fil des siècles, les stratégies des penseurs chrétiens ou des missionnaires européens évoluent, à mesure que l'islam est mieux connu, pour affiner la charge et les arguments théologiques. Mais la guerre idéologique demeure un enjeu fondamental, si marquant qu'il sous-tend nos propres représentations aujourd'hui : le sentiment de supériorité des Occidentaux à l'égard des musulmans et des Arabes n'est pas né avec la colonisation, il plonge ses racines au Moyen Âge
