BURKE, JOHN:
A TRAVELLER'S HISTORY OF SCOTLAND.

UK8vo HBdw/djillustrated1st edn. FINE/FINE. No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj. Bright crisp clean glossy laminated wrap-around colour painting 'The Drover's Departure' by Edward Landseer illustrated dw/djwith yellow lettering inevitably lightly sunned/faded to spine/backstrip; with negligible shelf-wear or to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Topfore-edges generally bright and clean; contents bright tight clean solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners appears unread apart from my collation. Publisher's bright crisp clean sharp-cornered original plain dark brown cloth boards with bright crisp blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK8vo HBdw/djillustrated1st ednv-xipp1- 253pp paginated includes separate Contents Illustrations lists/tables Acknowledgements a Preface9 chapters12pp contemporary b/w scenic photographs and reproduction b/w illustrations in 1 block between pp142/3 a Chronology of Scottish and English monarchs a Select Bibliography and an Index; plus unpaginated half-titletitle pages and a double-page Scotland regional map with 2 island insets.
No visitor to Scotland can escape for a moment the powerful presence of the past.On every side castles kirks monuments even the echoing emptiness of glens and lochs speak of great events - often tragic events yet leavened by the happier contributions of whisky distilleries golf courses and a long tradition of hospitality and wry humour. In this book John Burke brilliantly interweaves history and topography.Scotland is divided chapter by chapter into regions so that the reader wherever he is can look around him at the very stage on which the drama on the page was enacted.Yet the book as a whole presents a complete and compelling readable narrative. It encourages the visitor - even the armchair traveller in spirit wandering into a far fascinating land - to explore beyond the obvious sights and understand how the present scene relates to past events and people: past yet still vividly alive. No other book whether guidebook or formal history could convey the reader quite so directly to Scotland's heart. Pages very clean no notes no underlining or highlighting. Pages 137-144 have a very small mark on the upper edge like it was opened there by putting a fingernail into the pages. Elinor Burkett took a trip to a hostile world when she began her year long odysey with an assignment as a Fulbright Professor teaching journalism in Kyrgystan which is described as a place of "dilapidated apartments bizarre food and demoralized citizens clinging to the safety of Brother Russia". She then journeyed to Afghanistan and Iraq where she watched the build-up to the American invasion; then on to Iran Mongolia Uzbekistan China and Vietnam.
