Rare British army regulations governing equipment and supplies, first issued in 1880 during the Second Anglo-Afghan War and here re-issued in 1883, in vastly expanded form, in spite of the fact that the British and Indian troops had effectively withdrawn from Afghanistan by 1881, leaving behind only British Indian agents to liaison between the governments. The orders were issued by Major General Sir G. R. Greaves (1831-1922) as Adjutant-General for India. - This copy with an ink annotation to the title-page and first leaf of text marking it for the use of "Section C, Simla". Corners worn; interior spotted, preliminaries dusty. Unrecorded in library catalogues: the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at Brown University's John Hay Library holds the 1880 issue, which comprises a mere 55 pages. Cf. OCLC 143614724.

410 p. Foxed. 8vo. 220 mm. Spine rebacked in black leather. Original boards, worn. First American edition. Hardbound. Good. Scots born Thomas Hamilton (1789-1842) was generally overshadowed by his famous father - William Hamilton (1758-1790), professor of anatomy and botany at Glasgow, and his brother Sir William Hamilton (1788-1856) the metaphysician and antiquary. In 1810, after fully showing, in Glasgow and Liverpool, his incapacity for business, he got a commission in the 29th Regiment. Twice on active service in the Peninsula, he received from a musket bullet, at Albuera, a somewhat serious wound in the thigh. He was also in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with his regiment, which at length was sent to France as part of the army of occupation. About 1818 Hamilton retired to Edinburgh on half-pay. He became a valued member of the 'Blackwood' writers. Hamilton married in 1820, and for several summers he and his wife lived near Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott finding them very congenial neighbors and friends. In 1827 he wrote the ten popular novel Cyril Thornton. In 1829 they went to Italy, where Mrs. Hamilton died. Some time after his return, Hamilton visited America, bringing back materials for a this book on the Americans. 'Men and Manners in America' first appeared in 1833. 'Here his fund of humour and his genial satire, characteristics that struck Carlyle in his interviews with him in 1832-3 found scope, but his fun, if occasionally extravagant, was never unfair, nor were his criticisms directed by prejudice or charged with ill-nature.' - DNB. In the book he insightfully comments on all aspects of American culture, industry and government, he frequently expresses fascinating insight into the mores of this country. Original Small Photograph Album Entitled "From the Golden Gate to White Pass and Return.".
N.p.: N.p. ca. 1895. Original string-tied album with alligator-patterned wrappers title in the blank space in the middle of the front. 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches and with ten leaves. Each leaf bears back-to-back photographs so there is a total of 20 photographs all inter-leaved with tissue guards having the same alligator pattern. Every photograph has an annotation in red and in a very legible hand. A lovely little album.In actuality the album is primarily concerned with sights in the Great North. The only photograph taken in the U.S. is a moody and eerie shot of the turbulent waters off Point Reyes. The one succeeding that is titled "Government Street Victoria B.C." Among other pictures are the Russian Church and trading post at Sitka. There is a very nice photograph of downtown "Skaguway." The tour must have originated in Spokane as there is one photograph of "Spokane Passengers at Pitchfork Falls." Their clothing makes this album a tad dateable. It's not a loud declamatory album but rather one of quietness and appreciation. The photographer surely an amateur. had a real feel for the frozen North. N.p. hardcover
