Lightly foxed dust jacket price clipped but not torn or creased with nicks to ends of sunned spine and to lower rear edge. 288pp. The author was second in command of Scott's tragic expedition to the South Pole in 1910. He survived because he fell victim to scurvy and was dragged to to a deserted camp on the Great Ice Barrier. From there he was taken back to England to recover. With maps at the end and photographs throughout.

A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author was invited by King Hussein of Jordan to conduct an expedition to explore the disappearing wildlife and vegetation of that country. The expedition included Julian Huxley and travelled three thousand miles through desert and mountain passes, and included Azraq oasis with its Roman fortress used by Lawrence of Arabia, Petra, Jerash, etc. They discovered a species of plant new to science, as well as bird species not in their normal range.

He continues following the conquistadores in this sequel, through Peru, Ecuador and western Bolivia around Lake Titicaca and into Amazonia, via Iquitos, up the Amazon past Manaos as far as Para at the river's mouth.
