Besides the maps called for in the book there are several contemporary maps, mounted on rear endpapers, including two maps taken from the Times of November 1st and 2nd, 1876 relating to the Nares Arctic expedition in the Alert and Discovery with two pages of text on same; and a folding map of the Arctic regions showing the route of the Captain Austin expedition, undated but nineteenth century, entitled Map of the Arctic Seas to Illustrate Franklin's Footsteps, Chapman & Hall (corner damage).

Simpson, William / Kaye, John William.
India Ancient and Modern. A Series of Illustrations of the Country and People of India and Adjacent Territories. London, Day & Son, 1867.
Large folio (ca. 460 x 645 mm). 2 vols. (2), IV, 50 pp. (2), 51-100 pp. Chromolithographed dedication heightened with gold and 50 chromolithographed plates after Simpson mounted on thin card. Contemporary half morocco with gilt rules. All edges gilt. A fine set of Simpson's views of India, monumental even in the reduced form in which the financial circumstances of the times forced the publisher to recast the work, originally planned to comprise five times the present scope. - Famed for his pictures of the Crimean war theatre, Simpson was commissioned to illustrate a work on India that was to rival David Roberts's "Holy Land". He arrived in Calcutta in 1859 and joined the party of the Governor-General, Lord Canning, on a tour of the area where the mutiny had taken place. Over three years he visited much of the subcontinent, including the Himalayas, Kashmir, Ceylon, Tibet and its Buddhist temples, and upon his return submitted 250 watercolours to his publishers. However, in the wake of the Panic of 1866, the wealthy English patrons and subscribers on whom Day & Son had banked shrunk away from so costly an undertaking, and the publisher - already under pressure since cheaper wood engravings had turned chromolithographs into a luxury - issued a series of merely 50 chromolithographed plates. Simpson's original watercolours, much to the artist's chagrin, were ultimately sold off as bankrupt stock. The work remains a magnificent achievement, presenting a detailed and wide-ranging representation of India immediately after the Sepoy Rebellion. - Light spotting to tissue guards; some plates lightly soiled in the margins with very occasional fraying to edges. Bindings professionally repaired and sympathetically rebacked with the original spine laid back. Removed from the Library of the Birmingham Assay Office, one of the four assay offices in the United Kingdom, with their inconspicuous library stamp to the flyleaves. Very rare: we have traced only three other copies of this work at auction in nearly 50 years. Cf. Pheroza Godrej & P. Rohatgi, Scenic Splendours: India Through the Printed Image (London 1989), pp. 98f.

Sir John Foster Fraser (1868-1936), English travel writer [Henry William Massingham (1860-1924), editor of 'The Nation', 1907-19
John Foster Fraser Autograph Letter Signed 'John Foster Fraser' from the English travel writer Sir John Foster Fraser to H. W. Massingham of the Daily Chronicle describing his career and qualifications while applying for journalistic work.
3 January 1896; The Author's Club 3 Whitehall Court SW London. 12mo 4 pp. 61 lines. Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. An impressive letter applying for work. He does not expect Massingham addressed as 'W. H. Massingham' to remember their meeting 'in the Lobby' when he was 'chief reporter on The Sun' while at the same time holding 'a Parliamentary engagement on the staff of the C. N.' Gives details of his subsequent employment including joining the editorial staff of the 'Manchester Guardian' 'principally to look after their weekly paper which was in a sad way. I prolonged its existence rather than gave fresh life to it & in May last it died.' For the last four months he has been 'in Asia Minor & Syria seeing something of the disturbed country - an interview of mine with Sir Phillip Currie is to appear in the English Illustrated - & getting material which I hope may be useful to me'. He is 'now back in London extremely anxious to get back in the Press Gallery'. A 'descriptive writer' is more than he can hope for and he would like to 'secure a sessional engagement on the reporting staff of the Daily Chronicle'. He is a 'verbatim note taker' and 'a good summary writer' and is 'well acquainted with Parliamentary work'. Names six individuals 'who know what sort of journalist I am' including Clement Shorter and T. P. O'Connor. As 'a young man & a Radical' he would 'prefer the Daily Chronicle especially as it is also a literary paper'. Being 'a magazine writer' does not prevent him from 'being a reporter'. He is 'no novice to Parliamentary reporting for it is only eighteen months since I left it'. 3 January 1896; The Author's Club, 3 Whitehall Court, SW, London. unknown

After the embarrassment of Ross's first voyage in which he claimed to see the mountains in Lancaster Sound it took him a decade to source private backing he had lost the confidence of the British Admiralty for a second trip. Ross travelled through Lancaster Sound into Prince Regent inlet and onto Boothia Peninsula while on the way finding remnants of Parry's ship "Fury" which had been wrecked on North Somerset Island. For three consecutive winters Ross and his men were stuck in ice but used the time wisely to learn mapping hunting sewing transportation and language from the local inuit. Ross also organized lectures lessons and scientific inquiries one of which discovered the North Magnetic Pole. In 1832 Ross finally abandoned the ship and managed to live on supplies found at Parry's wreck. A whaler rescued Ross and his crew in 1833 and remarkably it was the same vessel which Ross had commanded on his first voyage. Arctic Bib 14866; Chavanne 1450; Sabin 73381.
