Sir John Foster Fraser (1868-1936), English travel writer [Henry William Massingham (1860-1924), editor of 'The Nation', 1907-19
John Foster Fraser Autograph Letter Signed 'John Foster Fraser' from the English travel writer Sir John Foster Fraser to H. W. Massingham of the Daily Chronicle describing his career and qualifications while applying for journalistic work.
3 January 1896; The Author's Club 3 Whitehall Court SW London. 12mo 4 pp. 61 lines. Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. An impressive letter applying for work. He does not expect Massingham addressed as 'W. H. Massingham' to remember their meeting 'in the Lobby' when he was 'chief reporter on The Sun' while at the same time holding 'a Parliamentary engagement on the staff of the C. N.' Gives details of his subsequent employment including joining the editorial staff of the 'Manchester Guardian' 'principally to look after their weekly paper which was in a sad way. I prolonged its existence rather than gave fresh life to it & in May last it died.' For the last four months he has been 'in Asia Minor & Syria seeing something of the disturbed country - an interview of mine with Sir Phillip Currie is to appear in the English Illustrated - & getting material which I hope may be useful to me'. He is 'now back in London extremely anxious to get back in the Press Gallery'. A 'descriptive writer' is more than he can hope for and he would like to 'secure a sessional engagement on the reporting staff of the Daily Chronicle'. He is a 'verbatim note taker' and 'a good summary writer' and is 'well acquainted with Parliamentary work'. Names six individuals 'who know what sort of journalist I am' including Clement Shorter and T. P. O'Connor. As 'a young man & a Radical' he would 'prefer the Daily Chronicle especially as it is also a literary paper'. Being 'a magazine writer' does not prevent him from 'being a reporter'. He is 'no novice to Parliamentary reporting for it is only eighteen months since I left it'. 3 January 1896; The Author's Club, 3 Whitehall Court, SW, London. unknown

Appendix: xii 120pp cxliv ciii. Half cream leather with dark brown leather boards spine ruled with black leather spine labels titled in gilt. After the embarrassment of Ross's first voyage in which he claimed to see the mountains in Lancaster Sound it took him a decade to source private backing he had lost the confidence of the British Admiralty for a second trip. Ross travelled through Lancaster Sound into Prince Regent inlet and onto Boothia Peninsula while on the way finding remnants of Parry's ship "Fury" which had been wrecked on North Somerset Island. For three consecutive winters Ross and his men were stuck in ice but used the time wisely to learn mapping hunting sewing transportation and language from the local inuit. Ross also organized lectures lessons and scientific inquiries one of which discovered the North Magnetic Pole. In 1832 Ross finally abandoned the ship and managed to live on supplies found at Parry's wreck. A whaler rescued Ross and his crew in 1833 and remarkably it was the same vessel which Ross had commanded on his first voyage. Arctic Bib 14866; Chavanne 1450; Sabin 73381. Sirén, Osvald.
Les palais impériaux de Pékin. Deux cent soixante-quartorze planches hors texte en héliotypie d'apres les photographies de l'auteur, douze dessins architectureaux et deux plans, avec une notice historique [...]. Paris & Brussels, G. Vanoest, 1926.
3 volumes. VI, 73, [3 blank]; [3], [1 blank]; [3], [1 blank] pp. With 12 plans and 2 maps (mostly folding), and a total of 274 plates with heliotypes. Publisher's original printed blue paper wrappers. First edition in French of a work on the imperial palaces of Beijing by the Finnish-born Swedish art historian and professor Osvald Sirén (1879-1966). Besides the Italian Renaissance, Sirén was very interested in Chinese art and culture, and wrote various books on the subject, mostly in English. The photographs were all taken by Sirén himself, and he wrote an accompanying 40-page introduction on the so-called "Forbidden City", with two small chapters on the seaside and summer palaces. The heliotypes show mostly palaces, some from several angles, but also monuments, pavilions, statues, interiors and gardens, with short descriptions in both French and English. They give a unique view of the city in the early 20th century, since some of the buildings have vanished or are now settled in completely different surroundings. An English edition appeared simultaneous by the same publisher. - With a bookplate in each volume of W. A. S. Swets (1902-92). Minor foxing throughout, original paper wrappers heavily discoloured. Overall a good copy, wholly untrimmed and with the bolts unopened. R. Thiriez, Barbarian Lens: Western Photographers of the Qianlong Emperor's European Palaces, p. 182.
