Thomas Cook travel agent. Autograph Note Signed to lithographic illustration of his ‘Leicester Temperance Hall and Hotel / Designed by J. Medland Esq. Gloucester’.
Without date or place but docketed in another hand on the reverse including years 1866 and 1867. See Cook’s entry in the Oxford DNB. His temperance hall and hotel illustrated here were built in 1853. The hall was demolished in the 1960s to be replaced by a building typical of those that blight Leicester in 2011; the council gave permission for the hotel to be demolished to make way for another monstrosity. Sepia lithograph printed in landscape on 20 x 13 cm leaf of laid paper extracted from a book or pamphlet. Attractive illustration of an imposing structure with those that flank it and people and coaches in the foreground. Cook’s inscription is written lengthwise and upwards in the right-hand margin. The handwriting is difficult: ‘adopt the scene you have sent / once The I’ll track for post port / Yours very truly / Thos Cook’. Docketed in another hand on the reverse: ‘No 1 / grants. / 2 Bills for 1866 - paid in /67 / 3 Shingleton Bill -’. Size 50cm diameter. Impressive detailed maps with geographic regions outlined in colour. There a slight ghosting of the words Southern Hemisphere and /or Northern Hemisphere on each map. The nonexistent Mountains of Kong running west-east join The Mountains of the Moon. The Number 3 is shown on the top left hand corner of The Northern Hemisphere Map and the Number 2 on the Southern Hemisphere map. Cook's highest latitude South is noted on the South Pole. The reverse of both maps are blank. John Thomson produced His New General Atlas between 1814 and 1821. Folded as issued. There is an extra fold on the Southern Hemisphere map which can hopefully be pulled out if framing. Beautiful font design title banner. John Thomson 1777 - 1837 was a Scottish bookseller and publisher active in the early 19th century who was one of the leaders in Europe who favored detailed and accurate mapping over the decorative and elaborate cartouches that appeared in earlier maps. His most important work was "Thomson's New General Atlas" and his "Atlas of Scotland". John Thomson 1777 - 1837 was a Scottish bookseller and publisher active in the early 19th century who was one of the leaders in Europe who favored detailed and accurate mapping over the decorative and elaborate cartouches that appeared in earlier maps. His most important work was "Thomson's New General Atlas" and his "Atlas of Scotland". First edition of this monumental photographic work, recording the diversity of Chinese culture during the late 19th century in a wealth of views, portraits, and public scenes. The Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837-1921), a pioneer of photojournalism, was one of the first photographers to travel to the Far East, documenting the people, landscapes and artifacts of eastern cultures. After settling in Hong Kong in 1868 and establishing a studio there, Thomson spent four years travelling throughout China: he saw the southern trading port of Canton, the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, and the Great Wall, venturing deep into central China. He visited the Fukien region in 1870/71, travelling up the Min River by boat and proceeding to Amoy and Swatow. On the island of Formosa he visited the capital, Taiwanfu, before journeying on to the aboriginal villages on the west plains of the island. Three months were spent travelling 3000 miles up the Yangtze River to Hupeh and Szechuan. Thomson's travels in China were often perilous, as he visited remote, almost unpopulated regions far inland. Most of the people he encountered had never seen a westerner or camera before. Thomson had to transport a bulky wooden camera, many large, fragile glass plates, and potentially explosive chemicals. He photographed in a wide variety of conditions and often had to improvise because chemicals were difficult to acquire. His subject matter varied enormously: from humble beggars and street people to Mandarins, Princes and senior government officials; from remote monasteries to Imperial palaces; from simple rural villages to magnificent landscapes. - Many of the plates have German captions carefully pencilled in. Bindings professionally restored at extremeties, spines rebacked. Removed from the Geographical Institute of the University of Vienna, with their library stamp throughout and deaccession stamp to title-pages. A fine set. The author, settlement officer of the Bannu district, describes the geography, history, politics, land revenue system, social life, etc, but devotes most of the book to the popular stories, ballads, riddles, proverbs of the people and provides both the English and Pashto translations of the proverbs which he supplies in about 30 categories. The appendix gives the Vesh custom, particularly important in understanding land rights and tenure, in five communities including Matora, Sikander Khel, Mulazai, Mamu Khel, Abba Khel, a considerable expansion over what is described in the text.
