‎Édition originale de cet ouvrage consacré aux travaux en cours de construction du canal transocéanique destiné à relier latlantique au pacifique. Son auteur Lucien Napoléon Bonaparte-Wyse (1844-1909), est un lieutenant de vaisseau, ingénieur et géographe français. Il est officiellement le fils de Sir Thomas Wyse (bien que son vrai père puisse être un officier britannique, le capitaine Studholm John Hodgson3) et de Lætitia Bonaparte (nièce4 de Napoléon Ier). Il est le petit-neveu de l'empereur et le frère de Marie de Solms et de William Bonaparte-Wyse. Lucien Wyse avait obtenu une concession de 99 ans avec le gouvernement colombien pour lexploitation du canal transocéanique appelée « Concession Wyse. Louvrage contient le récit de sa proposition de canal traversant l'isthme de Panama. Le plan de Wyse pour la construction d'un canal fut approuvé au Congrès international pour l'étude d'un canal interocéanique en 1879 et les travaux commencèrent en 1881. La tentative de construction entraîne de nombreuses pertes en vies humaines à cause de la maladie, mais ce sont des difficultés financières et techniques qui mettent fin au projet en 1889 et conduisent aux scandales de l'affaire de Panama. Il fait le point sur les travaux du canal de Panama et relate ses négociations avec le gouvernement colombien en vue de faire prolonger la concession qu'il avait obtenue en 1876. Pages 387-388 est reproduite la « Lettre dengagement adressée à Lucien N.B. Wyse par le comité de direction du chemin de fer de Colon (Aspinwall) à Panama. Lieutenant Commander Lucien N.-B. (Scratches and defects from use). First edition of this work dedicated to the ongoing construction of the transoceanic canal intended to connect the Atlantic to the Pacific. Its author Lucien Napoléon Bonaparte-Wyse (1844-1909), is a French naval lieutenant, engineer and geographer. He is officially the son of Sir Thomas Wyse (although his real father may have been a British officer, Captain Studholm John Hodgson3) and Lætitia Bonaparte (niece4 of Napoleon I). He is the great-nephew of the Emperor and the brother of Marie de Solms and William Bonaparte-Wyse. Lucien Wyse had obtained a 99-year concession from the Colombian government for the operation of a transoceanic canal called the Wyse Concession.The work contains his account of his proposed canal across the Isthmus of Panama. Wyse's plan for the construction of a canal was approved at the International Congress for the Study of an Interoceanic Canal in 1879 and work began in 1881. The construction attempt resulted in much loss of life due to disease, but it was financial and technical difficulties which put an end to the project in 1889 and led to the scandals of the Panama affair. He takes stock of the work on the Panama Canal and relates his negotiations with the Colombian government with a view to extending the concession he had obtained in 1876. Pages 387-388 reproduces the Letter of commitment addressed to Lucien N.B. Wyse by the board of directors of the Colon (Aspinwall) Panama Railway. Lieutenant Commander Lucien N.-B.
