Né Girod de Chantrans, il abandonne sa particule après la Révolution. Après des études chez les jésuites, il devient officier du génie en 1768. Cest lors dun séjour à Besançon, vers 1785, quil découvre lhistoire naturelle, et fréquente notamment Charles Nodier (1783-1844). En 1802, il entame une carrière politique en étant élu député au Corps législatif avant de se consacrer uniquement aux sciences naturelles en 1810. Il sintéresse particulièrement à lobservation microscopique. Girod de Chantrans est considéré comme le père, avec Jean Pierre Étienne Vaucher (1763-1841), de la phycologie française. Il fonde et préside la Société d'agriculture, commerce et arts du Doubs. Cet ingénieur de génie, ce naturaliste passionné de tout, curieux d'économie, de médecine, d'agriculture comme on savait l'être au XVIIIe siècle put à loisir observer la vie des naturels de la partie française de l'île, alors la colonie la plus riche du monde, véritable Eldorado aux yeux des contemporains. Il en rapporta son ""Voyage d'un Suisse"", publié en 1785 sous ce titre mystérieux pour éviter les foudres de la censure... C'est avant tout la société qui l'intéresse : une société où quelques dizaines de milliers de blancs et d'affranchis dominent un demi-million d'esclaves, où une production agro-alimentaire capitaliste et servile a permis l'édification de fortunes colossales, où les planteurs ont sur les esclaves un pouvoir absolu, refusent d'appliquer les ordonnances royales sur l'amélioration de la condition servile et luttent contre la Métropole pour l'abolition du protectionnisme.....
