The remaining two books were written between 1497 and 1501 and deal with the Italian wars, ending in the death of King Charles VIII of France.

thick 12mo [15.5 x 11 cm]; 2 volumes in one, vi, 357; 349 pp, engraved folding map of Brazil as frontis, 7 plates (complete). original red blind-stamped cloth, rebacked in cloth, preserving the original boards and most of original gilt decorated spine, new endpapers, very good, sound and complete copy, clean. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The text is based on Southey, Mawe, Luccock, Henderson, Maria Graham, Maximilian, Lindley, Beauchamp, Martius, etc, the plates also taken from these works. Borba da Moraes 577: 'It is an excellent collection and very well produced and was first published in 1824 and reprinted in 1830'. Almost entirely on Brazil, with a small section on Uruguay, the work describes the cities, towns, mining, each province described in detail, topography, customs, economy, etc. The plates include views, activities, market place in Buenos Ayres, etc.

Autographed Business Letter
New York 1846. unbound. 1 page 10 x 8 inches New York City December 8 1846. In this letter a salesman has booked travel for a favored client: "I have sent for you by the steam boat CHAMPION which leaves here this afternoon for New Haven marked as you directed by Springfield railroad with three kegs of printing ink." An interesting memento from the days when steamships were owned by the wealthy railroads who attempted to monopolize travel and trade. In this case the steamboat Champion actually the New Champion 1846 - 1851 would leave the Port of New York and set sail up the Long Island Sound eventually entering the Connecticut River bound for New Haven. The passenger could choose to sail as far up as Springfield Massachusetts or transfer for the much faster train at New Haven all owned by Hartford & New Haven Railroads. Several folds; small chip in the left margin. Very good condition.<br/><br/> unknown books

A fine tale of travel and adventures, with vignettes of: sea travel; mutiny; gold prospecting; gambling; ghosts; and even a lynching. Amedee Forestier (1861-1930) was an illustrator for the Illustrated London News. W148.
