THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS. Translated from the French of A. De Lamartine. Bibliotheca Curiosa.
Two volumes bound into one. pp. 64; 78 With the original thin parchment paper wraps bound in. 8vo. 145 x 224 mm. Nice black half niger morocco leather binding. This Bibliotheca Curiosa edition was limited to 275 small-paper and only 75 large-paper copies. This is a LARGE PAPER COPY with very wide margins. Alphonse Marie Louis de Lamartine (1790-1869) was a famous French poet, novelist, historian, biographer, and statesman. He competed unsuccessfully for the presidency of France with Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (later Napoleon III). After this loss he left politics and devoted himself entirely to writing, spending much of the remainder of his life in a hopeless effort to repay the fantastic debts he had accumulated in his youth. Many of our popular images of Columbus come from Lamartine. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W145

Lamont, James
Yachting in the Arctic Seas or Notes of Five Voyages of Sport and Discovery in the Neighbourhood of Spitzbergen and Novaya Zemlya
Rediscovery Books UK 2006. Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket. Facsimile Edition reproduced with kind permission of The Royal Geographical Society: viii 387 pages map illustrated with b/w illustrations. Previous owners signature verso front cover otherwise contents clean appears unread. In March1869 the schooner 'Diana' was launched in the Clyde. A cross between a yacht and a Scottish whaler she was the creation of James Lamont a Scottish member of Parliament and a man of some wealth. Lamont had earlier travelled north to Spitzbergen and had published a book about his adventures there. This had fuelled his interest and he consequently commissioned the building of the Diana; designed specifically for yachting in the Arctic Seas and resigned his hard-won seat in the House of Commons to pursue this activity.A prime example of the popular conception of a gentleman hunter and explorer Lamont and his crew with no particular scientific agenda in mind voyaged to Novaya Zemlya and the Kara Sea the Barentz Sea and Franz Josef Land and Spitzbergen. This enabled him to 'enjoy months of exciting hunts and days and nights never to be forgotten in earnest contemplation of some of the grandest and most interesting phenomena of nature'. The book includes many illustrations taken straight from their sketches and is an engaging travelogue from one of the earliest Arctic Tourists. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Arctic & Antarctic; Exploration. ISBN: 1905748329. ISBN/EAN: 9781905748327. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request.
