John Barrow fut un des premiers explorateurs de l'Afrique australe et il a rédigé la meilleure relation de ces contrées. Doué d'un grand pouvoir en tant qu'auditeur de la chambre des comptes, de solides connaissances en botanique, en géographie et en histoire naturelle, d'un style limpide et simple, Barrow a pu explorer avec sagacité de nombreuses régions. Après avoir donné une description du cap et discuter de l'importance de cette place en tant que port baleinier, Barrow conte 5 expéditions ou voyages différents : Voyage depuis le Cap-de-bonne-espérance jusqu'au district de Graaff reynet, en passant par le Karoo ou désert aride ; Voyage au pays des Cafres ; Voyage au pays des Boshismans ; Voyage depuis le district de Graaff jusqu'à la ville du Cap, en longeant la mer ; Voyage au pays des Namaaquas. Marbled boards with later leather spine new endpapers. Stamp of the Isle of Wight Insitution on several pages. Title page frontispiece and some plates foxed as often found the remainder of the text quite clean. Map has a section meaauring about 1.5 x 3 inches missing from lower left with some loss of content. A good reference copy. The author was the son of Sir John Barrow who traveled and worked in China and South Africa and served in the British Admiralty where he was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of exploration and discovery. The younger man followed in his father's footsteps as a traveler and writer producing popular and well-received works on his travels in Ireland Iceland Northern Europe and Austria Lombardy and Bavaria. Rebound in marbled boards with leather spine 5 raised bands and gilt title and corners half-leather to a high standard. Occasional minor foxing faint damp mark to lower margin of several pages. Small bumps to top corners and bottom front corner a little rubbed. A very pleasing copy with generous wide margins of this early 19th century account of China in which " it is attempted to appreciate the rank that this extraordinary empire may be considered to hold in the scale of civilized nations". Hardcover, good condition. Fully bound in brown calf with gilding to the spine and embossed decortation to the corners. Boards are very worn at the edges and spine with both spine ends torn with missing bands. Both hinges are split and there are several loose pages within, however all pages and plates are present including a fold out linen map. Internally the pages are foxed and there is some minor staining here and there. Latin inscription penned of the FEP. DP Used
