The Lands of Cazembe: Lacerda's Journey to Cazembe in 1798. Also Journey of the Pombeoros: P.J. Baptista and Amaro Jose Across Africa from Angola to Tette on the Zambeze. And a Resume of the Journey of MM. Monteiro and Gamitto Frank White's copy
London: John Murray for the Royal Geographicl Society 1873. Octavo pp viii 271 pages extremely clean and sound a large coloured folding map torn in one place without loss original blue cloth very slightly worn. The front endpaper is torn with some loss; the "lost" part has adhered to the reverse of the map corner - it does not affect the map itself. A shame as otherwise this copy would be close to very good. From the library of the African botanist Frank White with his signature on the title page. In 1798 Lacerda attempted to establish a route between the East and West Coast of Africa making Mozambique an important trading post. He managed to reach Cazembe where he died but his journey added greatly to the geographical knowledge of the interior of Africa. In addition to the main journey of Dr. Lacerda the book includes the journey of the Pomeiros P.J. Baptista and Amaro Jose across Africa from Angola to Tette on the Zambeze; and a Resume of the Journey of MM. Monteiro and Gamitto from Angola to the Rios de Senna. . First Edition. Cloth. Good.
