Die Geschichte der Ostforschung im Nationalsozialismus hat in den letzten Jahren viel Aufmerksamkeit erfahren, doch ist die Entwicklung der Disziplin nach 1945 bislang nicht systematisch untersucht worden. Wie gelang es ihren Vertretern, das Fach seiner Belastung zum Trotz in der Bundesrepublik zu etablieren Und wie wurde aus der nationalistisch, ethnozentrisch und antikommunistisch geprägten Ostforschung die noch heute praktizierte Osteuropaforschung Diesen beiden Transformationsprozessen geht die Autorin anhand von Texten, Biographien und Institutionen nach. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit kommt der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) zu, die entscheidenden Anteil am Wiederaufbau der Ostforschung hatte. Ihre Förderungspolitik trug dazu bei, daß sich die Wissenschaftler relativ bald von dem früheren Überlegenheitsanspruch gegenüber den osteuropäischen Gesellschaften distanzierten und sich kritisch mit der Vergangenheit ihres Faches auseinanderzusetzen begannen. Unter dem Eindruck wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche sowie der Neuen Ostpolitik wurde die Ostforschung schließlich Anfang der siebziger Jahre von der Osteuropaforschung abgelöst. He recounts their exploits in Napoleon's retreat from Moscow and how they struggled against the British Raj for supemacy in Central Asia. He continues right up to the times when Stalin persecuted them.
