Braham, (1922 ) , historian of the Holocaust, distinguished professor emeritus of political science at the City College of New York and the doctoral program at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Braham was born in Bucharest (Romania) and lived until 1943 in Dej (Transylvania) , from where he was sent by the Hungarian authorities to serve in a military forced labor battalion as a Jew who was not allowed to serve in his country's armed forces. Shortly after World War II he left for the United States, where he began his academic studies in comparative politics. After obtaining his Ph. D. , he began to study the history of the Holocaust of Central European Jewry. His best-known work is The Politics of Genocide: The Holocaust in Hungary (19942) . In its first year, this part of the institute operated under the joint sponsorship of the An-ski Vilna Jewish Historic-Ethnographic Society. By 1929, the members of 163 zamlerkrayzn (collectors circles) had sent more than 50, 000 copies of proverbs, folktales, and folk songs to YIVO. The analysis and publication of this material proceeded more slowly, in part because the leading folklorist, Y. L. Cahan, was living in New York. Added English title page: Back to the shtetl: An-Sky and the Jewish ethnographic expedition, 1912-1914: from the collections of the State Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg: exhibition catalogue. Profusely illustrated, some in color, with articles on the history of the An-Sky expedition. From 1912 to 1914, S. An-ski (Shloyme Zaynvl Rapoport) headed ethnographic expeditions to the Pale of Jewish Settlement. After a limited display of the expeditionary collection in 1914, it was exhibited at the Jewish Museum in Saint Petersburg, which opened briefly in 1917, and then again in 1923, only to be closed in 1929. In 2000, most of the remaining artifacts were located at the Russian Museum of Ethnography in Saint Petersburg, while most of the manuscripts and audio recordings were held in Kiev, at the Vernadskii National Library of Ukraine.
In 19921995, an exhibition of some items from the An-ski collection (approximately 150 artifacts) traveled to museums in Amsterdam, Cologne, Frankfurt, Jerusalem, and New York. The same collection was displayed in the exhibition Images of One People: The Jewish Collections of the Russian Museum of Ethnography in Saint Petersburg in April 2004. - YIVO Encyclopedia. First published book of Tsadok Dolgopolski (18791959) , Yiddish writer. Born into a poor family in Horodok, near Vitebsk, Tsadok Dolgopolski began working at a factory in Nevel while still young. In the late 1890s, he became an active member of the Bund and was imprisoned in Bialystok. Self-taught, he passed the qualifying examinations for teachers and organized a school for Jewish children in his hometown. By 1898, he was writing short articles on labor issues for illegal and legal Yiddish periodicals. In 1914, Boris Kletskins Vilna publishing house issued a collection of Dolgopolskis works, mainly plays, called Bilder fun shtetl (Portraits of the Shtetl) . - Yivo Encyclopedia.
