Gildin, Khayem
BRUNEMS
1st edition of one of authors most significant books. Period boards with original modernist wrappers mounted front and back. 12mo, 275 pages; 19 cm. In Yiddish. Title translate as Wells. A novel. 1 of 3000 copies printed. Khayim Gildin (18841944) was a Yiddish writer. Born in Nikopol, Ukraine, into a workers family, Khayim Gildin was 12 years old when he began working in a factory. He was then twice arrested for revolutionary activity. From 1908 to 1914, he lived and worked in Warsaw, where he published articles on labor issues and belonged to the circle of literati directly influenced by Y. L. Peretz. Gildin returned to Ukraine in 1915 and lived in Odessa. After the 1917 Revolution he was a member of the Fareynikte, the United Jewish Socialist Workers Party.During the civil war, Gildin served in the Red Army, joining the Communist Party in 1919. He lived in Moscow from 1920 to 1925. In October 1920, during the First All-Russian Congress of Proletarian Writers, he spoke as a representative of the Yiddish members, arguing that poetry of political agitation had to supplant aesthetic literature. It is not clear whom Gildin actually represented during the Congress. His own poem, In fabrik (In the Factory), published in 1919, was a rare example of Yiddish industrial poetry
. The first actual meeting of a Moscow Yiddish proletarian group took place much lateron 5 January 1922. On that day, a small number of people, including Moyshe Taytsh and Shmuel Persov, gathered in Gildins flat. Subsequently, other young writers such as Yoysef Rabin and David Utkes joined them, though in 1923 the group failed to launch its journal Royte heftn (Red Notebooks).... Gildin left Moscow in 1925 and spent the rest of his life in Ukraine, working at various Soviet Jewish institutions, coediting the Kharkov-based journal Prolit (Proletarian Literature), and publishing poems and stories, some of which were translated into Russian and Ukrainian. His most significant books were published in Kharkov, including two editions of his collected stories, Brunems (Wells; 1929 and 1932), and Gezamlte verk (Collected [Poetic] Works; 1932). In 1932 and 1933 he edited the last two issues of the journal Di royte velt (The Red World). Gildin was not popular among his fellow literati. Perets Markish, for instance, did not hide his disdain for the proletarian parasite Gildin, who denounced Markish for having a Polish passport. Gildins 1934 story Mendl Graf, published in Russian translation in 1940, belongs to the Soviet literature eulogizing the gulag (the Soviet labor camp system) for its methods of reeducating criminals and political prisoners
.Six years later, Gildin himself vanished in the gulag; rumors claimed that he had criticized Soviet generals responsible for failures during the SovietFinland War in 19391940 (Gennady Estraikh in YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe, 2010). For more on Gildin, see Gennady Estraikh, A Touchstone of Socialist Realism: The 1934 Almanac of Soviet Yiddish Writers, Jews in Eastern Europe 37 [3] (1998): 2437; Gennady Estraikh, Yiddish Literary Life in Soviet Moscow, 19181924, Jews in Eastern Europe 42 [2] (2000): 2555. OCLC: 19303550. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide. SUBJECT(S): Short stories, Yiddish. Jewish library stamps on blank endpapers and title page. Period Yiddish card pocket at front pastedown. Covers trimmed close, touching authors and publishers names. Light wear and rubbing. Beautiful modernist cover layout. Good Condition. (YID-36-7-LS-+)500

Stratonov, V. [Vsevolod Viktorovich]. Mikhael Sheynin, translator. Grisha Yashunski, editor
IN HIMLISHN OKEAN [COVER DESIGN BY YOSEF TCHAIKOV?]
1st Yiddish edition. Period boards with original green, red, and white modernist illustrated wrappers mounted front and rear, 12mo, 95 pages. Modernist cover with original typeface initialed in the text in Yiddish Y.T; possibly for Yosef Tchaikov. Includes drawings (not by Tchaikov) and photo plates. In Yiddish. Title translates as In the Heavenly Ocean: With 3 Drawings in the Text and 4 Pictorial Plates. Part of the series, Populer-Visnshaftlekhe Bibliotek; Natur un Kultur: Unter der Redaktsye fun Y. Yashunski, Nr. 3. 1 of 1000 copies printed. Tchaikov is known to have designed other covers for Kultur-Lige publications, often with creative Yiddish typefaces, for example: Di Kupe, by Peretz Markish; Samet, by Lipa Reznik; & Otem, by Ezra Feinenberg (all 1922). Joseph Moisevich Tchaikov (Also spelled, among other spellings, Tshaykov, Chaikov, and Tchaikovsky; 1888 - 1979) was a Russian Imperial and Soviet Russian sculptor, graphic designer and teacher of Ukrainian Jewish descent. Born in Kiev (present-day Kyiv, Ukraine) and initially trained as an engraver, Chaikov studied in Paris in the years 1910 through 1914. In 1912 he co-founded a group of young Jewish artists called Mahmad, and published a Hebrew-language magazine with that name; in 1913 he participated in the Salon d'Automne. He returned to Kiev in 1914. He was co-founder, along with El Lissitzky, Boris Aronson and others, of the Jewish socialist Kultur Lige in Kiev, led sculpture classes there, supervised a children's art studio and illustrated children's books, and in post-revolutionary Kiev focused on billboards and agitational propaganda. In 1921 he published the Yiddish-language book Skulptur, advocating avant-garde sculpture as a contribution to a new Jewish art. This book was also the first book on sculpture to be published in Yiddish.Chaikov moved to Moscow to teach at Vkhutemas from 1923 to 1930, alongside fellow sculptors Boris Korolev and Vera Mukhina. All three designed and taught cubist sculpture in the distinctively Russian Cubo-Futurism style, radically geometric and highly dynamic. From 1929 Chaikov was the head of the Society of Russian Sculptors. In 1932, after the end of the period of artistic freedom, all of these cubists turned back to Socialist Realism and produced more classically styled work.In the 1930s his work was prominently shown at the two Soviet world's fair pavilions, for the 1937 Paris Exposition and the 1939 New York World's Fair
.He was named an Honored Artist of the USSR in 1959, and his work is in the permanent collection of MOMA (Wikipedia). For more on Chaikov, see: Apter-Gabriel, Ruth (1987). Tradition and revolution: the Jewish renaissance in Russian avant-garde art, 1912-1928 (Israel Museum); and Futur Antérieur: L'avant-Garde Du Livre Yiddish (1914-1939). Paris: Skira Flammarion: Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme, 2009.SUBJECT(S): Astronomy -- Popular works. Sciences naturelles -- Ouvrages de vulgarisation. OCLC: 970887673. OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (YIVO, NYBC, HUC), none at any Ivy League Institution. Includes series title page, which has broken loose, laid in. Paper browning as is common with books of this vintage, a few corner chips, no text or other margins affected. Some staining and toning to cover, which retains its dramatic modernist design. Scarce work with unusual design, possibly by the leading Yiddish modernist. (YID-36-9-E)

Hofstein, David
FRAYD FUN NAYEM ZAYN: FERTE ZAMLUNG. [FREYD]
1st edition.original modernist covers,12mo, 141 pages ; 20 cm. In Yiddish. Text partially vocalized. David Hofstein (1889-1952) was a Russian-born Jewish poet who, after the Russian Revolution of 1917, which he welcomed...wrote only in Yiddish. He was coeditor of the Moscow Yiddish monthly Shtrom, the last organ of free Jewish expression in the Soviet Union. The poems in which he acclaimed the communist regime established him as one of the Kiev triumvirate of Yiddish poets, along with Leib Kvitko and Peretz Markish. Hofstein's elegies for Jewish communities devastated by the White movement pogroms appeared in 1922, with illustrations by Marc Chagall. Both had worked together as teachers at shelter for Jewish boys in suburban Malakhovka, which housed and employed boys orphaned by Ukrainian pogroms. Hofstein protested the banning of Hebrew and the persecution of Hebrew writers, arousing the suspicion of the authorities
. In 1939, Hofstein became member of the Communist Party. Hofstein hailed the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948; however, in the same year, when Joseph Stalin withdrew his support for Israel, Hofstein was arrested, together with Kvitko, Markish and other members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, first transported to Moscow and then to Siberia. He was executed on the Night of the Murdered Poets (August 1213, 1952) , together with twelve other Yiddish writers and artists. After the death of Stalin, they were posthumously rehabilitated, and Hofstein's selected works reappeared in a Russian translation in 1958 (Wikipedia) . SUBJECT(S) : Yiddish poetry. Poems. OCLC: 19306078. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide (Hebrew U, NLI, YIVO, Stanford, LOC, Harvard, HUC) , none west or south of Cincinnati. Cover toned with some edgewear, with a little loss to publishing info at lower inside margin, Good Condition overall. (Yid-42-3A)
