Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers 1839. Enlarged edition. Hardcover. Fine. Small 4to 138 pages some foxing. modern binding in 3/4 morocco light tidal line on top margin. <br/><br/>" . the editors of the present edition which is carefully reprinted from the first 4to edition of 1810 have found it necessary in point of justice to neutralise some of the authors statements by means of foot-notes of an opposite character and more consonant with what was some years ago and now is the condition of the Russians. They have also supplied a few deficiencies and additional statements in reference to places of importance visited by the author so as to give the work much of the interest of a fresh production . an account has been given of Poland Siberia and other districts which were not visited by him in the course of his travels - Prefatory Memoir." Mironov, Boris N Ben Eklof ( Translator).
A Social History of Imperial Russia 1700-1917
Boulder CO: Westview Press 1999. First English language edition. Hardcover. As New/issued without. 8vos; xxxiv 562; ix 389 pages maroon cloth in original shrinkwrap. Not x-library. Scarce. O.P. <br/><br/>This English translation contains an autobiography by Mironov which was not in the Russian edition. It details his anti-Marxism philosophy while a student in Leningrad. "The author has assimilated a large body of foreign scholarship primarily "new social history" produced by Anglo-American authors along with a sprinkling of more broadly European economic and demographic history from the 1970s and 1980s which is effectively incorporated into his own very deep empirical knowledge. . The reader does not find in this extensively researched account the standard Soviet answers to specific historical questions. Mironov has abandoned most Soviet cliches though he still assumes that laws of Russian history can be identified based on social science theory and quantitative analysis Elise Kimerling Wirtschafter." "This is a massterful work that provides other scholars with a wealth of useful information while confrontimg them with an argument that compels a response - William G. Wagner." Maps. ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LETTER DATED 18 DECEMBER 1886 FROM AMERICAN DENTIST IN ST. PETERSBURG RUSSIA
Intriguing letter from Sam of 16 pages pages are 4-1/2 x 7 inches. Easy to read. Addressed to "My dear Mother" but it appears from the text to have been his prospective Mother-in-Law as he is asking for the hand of her Edith in marriage. Sam says he will be able to provide very well for Edith indicating his dental practice in St. Petersburg makes $12000 a year "I've had this splendid dental business for years " but then later on his stresses how little money he has "I wish I had a lot of money not so much for myself but for others but I HAVE NOT GOT ANY OR VERY LITTLE" Sam has these words underlined twice. Does Edith's mom expect a dowry It is a bit confusing. He mentions also that he buys and sells Russian Antiques in New York City and that he has other business activities in Russia but that these activities have not gone well "I have to put in more money to go on so need I add that I've closed up my outside affairs with my usual luck loss. no use to go into details.
