‎Frederick Greenwood‎

‎Manuscript Papers and Letters of of Frederick Greenwood, a Distinguished Royal Army Officer from Woolwich in the County of Kent.‎

‎Original documents and manuscript letters of Frederick Greenwood (1789-1841), a distinguished Royal Army officer from Woolwich in the County of Kent, with the unique rank of Royal Artillery Company-Sergeant [Colour Sergeant], and portrait sitter for Drahonet's collection of paintings commissioned by William IV. Seven documents ranging in size, the smallest measuring approximately 11 x 17 cm, the largest measuring approximately 20 x 32 cm. Two are made on parchment. Age-toning, some split at folds, otherwise in very good condition. Frederick Greenwood (1789-1841) was a notable and respected military leader in his day, as is evident by his distinguished rank of Company-Sergeant [Colour Sergeant], and the glowing commentaries penned by his superiors who describe him as "exemplary, respectable, active, intelligent." He is best remembered by his portrait painting which is part of the British Royal Family's exclusive "Royal Collection" of art, having been commissioned in 1832 by William IV in a series of works to illustrate leading roles of the Army and the Navy. The artist was French artist Alexandre-Jean Dubois-Drahonet (1791-1834) who executed a great number of sketches of various national and military costumes, some of which are at Windsor. Little is known of Greenwood, however, apart from what is revealed in the present documents. A carpenter and cabinet maker by trade, at the age of twenty, he enlisted at Bradford, in the County of York (now Yorkshire) on 11 July 1809. As a sergeant, then a bombardier and corporal, he served during the Napoleonic Wars. From the early 1820s served 3 years 10 months in the Peninsula. He spent 8 years and 7 months at the Cape of Good Hope, from September 1824 until his retirement in 1833, placing him there between the fifth and sixth Xhosa Wars (Cape Frontier Wars, Kaffir Wars). Shortly after retiring from the Army he took to the seas, obtaining a position on HMS Lightning in 1838, and working in the West Indies onboard the HMS Megaera from 9 December 1838 until his death 20 October 1841. The lot includes: Official documents made in 1833 pertaining to Greenwood's Retirement and Pension from the Royal Army; Manuscript signed letters of recommendation presenting Greenwood in high esteem; Inspector's Check: an official Admiralty document made 28 April 1842 after Greenwood's death; A manuscript list headed "House of Fred'ck Cpy. Sergeant Greenwood", names his six children, born between 1817 and 1825, surely being his heirs. Manuscript‎

‎Free Europe Press Czech Propaganda Leaflet Distributed by Air Balloon. Svobodná Evropa Free Europe no. 34‎

‎Munich: Free Europe Press 1954-1956. Single leaf measuring 14.5 × 57 cm folded four times to create a pamphlet with ten pages of text and images. Very good. Scarce anti-communist flyer in Czech printed in Germany by Free Europe Press and distributed over Czechoslovakia via balloon from 1954 to 1956. With short articles in Czech and Slovak the publication informed Czechoslovak readers about political news unavailable to them. It also explained the "Ten Demands" program compiled by Radio Free Europe workers based on interviews with Czechoslovak refugees. Approximately 56 numbered issues were printed many of them such as the present one illustrated with drawings and small photographs. "In the 1950s at the height of the Cold War numerous psychological warfare leaflets were prepared by the Free Europe Press FEP of the Free Europe Committee. The group worked in cooperation with Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency CIA funding much of the operations. FEP leaflets were a major part of the post-World War II psychological warfare battle between East and West. The operation sent 590415 balloons that carried 301636883 leaflets posters books and other printed matter from West Germany over the Iron Curtain to Czechoslovakia Hungary and Poland from August 1951 to November 1956" Source: Free Europe Press Cold War Leaflets Accessed 2019 http://www.psywarrior.com/RadioFreeEurope.html. KVK OCLC show three issues at the British Library and a more significant run lacking only 12 issues at Wisconsin-Madison. unknown books‎

‎Free Europe Press Czech Propaganda Leaflet. "V jednotě síla. VÅ¡em členům Československé lidové oposice" Strength is in unity. To all members of the Czechoslovak peoples' opposition‎

‎Munich: Free Europe Press 1954. Single folded leaf measuring 20.8 × 14.6 cm printed to recto and verso and when folded resembling a US airmail envelope. With one duplicate copy; laid in is a small flyer depicting the Czechoslovak and US flags with the text "The American people greet the Czechoslovak peoples' opposition in their fight for a free tomorrow." Very good. Scarce anti-communist flyer in Czech one duplicate copy in all likelihood printed in Germany by Free Europe Press and distributed over Czechoslovakia via balloon in 1954. The flier mentions the recent currency reform 1953 which decimated the savings of peasants and workers and led to considerable unrest. It addresses workers and peasants as members of a "people's opposition" and urges them to raise awareness among others about possible forms of resistance and the growth of the opposition movement. It also references the "Ten Demands" list compiled by Radio Free Europe workers based on interviews with Czechoslovak refugees. The "envelope" features a printed stamp with T. G. Masaryk and the "postal stamp" reads "Pravda vítěží" or "The truth wins." Also laid in is a small flyer depicting the Czechoslovak and US flags with the text "The American people greet the Czechoslovak peoples' opposition in their fight for a free tomorrow." The envelopes were sent on April 29 1954 and were also issued in Slovak. ‎FRESHFIELD, Douglas W.‎

‎The Alpine Pass of Hannibal. [With Color Map]‎

‎7 pages plus a fold-out colour map measuring 12 x 13 inches (30 x 33cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Armed with the newest geographical information from contemporary expeditions into the Alps, Freshfield presents theories and attempts to bring some clarity for historians and geographers into historic events which have plagued mankind since the time of Polybius and Livy. A most captivating report examining the perplexing controversy of Hannibal's passage over the Alps, and the cripling blows and crushing victories he achieved in the name of mighty Carthage. Accompanied by an exceptional fold-out color map, this mountaineering report is one of the earliest reports that takes into account the mysteries of the Alps, and its treacherous passes, with regards to Hannibal's daring and verve as a general bent on the destruction of Roman wrath and her power over the Italian peninsular. Hannibal, (247B.C.- 182B.C.), was a Carthaginian general, an implacable and formidable enemy of Rome. Although knowledge of him is based primarily on the reports of his enemies, Hannibal appears to have been both just and merciful. He is renowned for his tactical genius. With a relatively small army of select troops, Hannibal set out to invade Italy by the little-known overland route. He fought his way over the Pyrenees and reached the Rhône River before the Romans could block his crossing, moved up the valley to avoid their army, and crossed the Alps. This crossing of the Alps, with elephants and a full baggage train, is one of the remarkable feats of military history. Which pass he used is unknown; some scholars believe it was the Mont Genèvre or the Little St. Bernard.‎

‎FRESHFIELD, Douglas.‎

‎The Southern Frontiers of Austria.‎

‎22 pages. Plus photographic plates and 5 colour maps in one large fold-out sheet, measuring approximately 14.5 x 19 inches (37 x 48cm). Spine chipped, Royal Geographical Society stamp to front cover, otherwise in original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a substantial account mostly dealing with the portion of Alps that serves as the political frontier of Austria, the mountains that stretch from the easternmost wedge of Switzerland to the head of the Adriatic, illustrated with spectacular photographs showing the Mandron Glacier and Adamello, the Forno Glacier, entrance to Val Di Genova (the valley of waterfalls and of unique crystalline rock formations), striking gorge of the Sarca, the Schlern, the peaks of Primiero, Carnic Alps, the Ampezzo valley and Antelao, Foca, The Mehmed Pasa Sokolovic Bridge of Visegrad across the Drina River in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sujeska River Gorge, and the highlands of Herzegovina. Accompanied by 5 colour maps in one large folding sheet, illustrating Austro-Italian frontier, present and proposed frontiers in the Trentino, the Western Trentino, present and proposed frontiers north of Trieste, and the Western frontier of Montenegro.‎
