Riottoso sia all'analogia sia all'anticipazione, quello che si annuncia sembra senza precedenti. Esperienza angosciata dell’imminenza, attraversata da due certezze contraddittorie: il vecchissimo soggetto della identità culturale in genere (prima della guerra si sarebbe forse parlato di identità «spirituale»), il vecchissimo soggetto della identità europea, ha certo la venerabile antichità di un tema esaurito. Ma forse questo «soggetto» conserva un corpo vergine. Il suo nome maschera forse qualcosa che non ha ancora un volto? E noi ci chiediamo nella speranza, con timore e tremore, a che somiglierà quel volto. Somiglierà ancora? E a quello di una qualche persona che crediamo di conoscere, Europa?
