Reinwald, Libraire 1884 Paul Topinard était un anthropologue français du XIXe siècle, né le 4 novembre 1830 à Paris et décédé le 20 décembre 1911 à Dijon. Il est considéré comme l'un des pionniers de l'anthropologie physique en France. Topinard a été formé en médecine et a obtenu son diplôme de docteur en médecine en 1859. Il a ensuite poursuivi une carrière dans l'armée française en tant que médecin militaire. Pendant la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870, il a été fait prisonnier et a passé plusieurs mois dans un camp de prisonniers. Après la guerre, Topinard s'est intéressé à l'étude des races humaines et a contribué à développer l'anthropologie physique en France. Il a publié de nombreux ouvrages sur le sujet, dont son ouvrage le plus célèbre intitulé "Éléments d'anthropologie générale", publié en 1885. Dans cet ouvrage, il a abordé des sujets tels que la classification des races humaines, la craniologie, l'anthropométrie et la génétique. Topinard a également été l'un des fondateurs de la Société d'Anthropologie de Paris en 1859 et en est devenu le président en 1886. Il a joué un rôle important dans l'établissement de l'anthropologie comme discipline scientifique en France et a contribué à la formation de nombreux anthropologues français. L'œuvre de Topinard a eu une influence durable sur le développement de l'anthropologie en France, bien que certaines de ses idées aient été critiquées ou dépassées par les avancées ultérieures dans le domaine. The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. The coins themselves minted for official purposes such as paying the army when studied carefully can help reconstruct official policies. They can also occasionally reveal what monuments now lost may have looked like. It is not infrequent to come across pleas that the ancient historian should make more frequent use of numismatic evidence. These essays make clear that efforts are being made both by numismatists and by historians to bring the two disciplines together. At the same time the papers reveal that the task is by no means a straightforward one.
